I'm a commercial photographer - which means from day-to-day the scope and focus of my work can change drastically.

I can shoot product shots one day, be the EPK (behind the scenes) photographer on a movie or TV set the next, and follow that with shots inside the operating room at a hospital. I have a photojournalism background and am one of the few photographers I've ever met with a medical degree and the certification required to shoot in the OR. I need a durable, flexible, programmable, reliable, high-quality camera that won't let me down.

I started on Nikon film cameras back in the late 1980's. My last pro Nikon digital was a D2x - and in 2008 I switched to Canon. With the Nikon D4s I'm back home with Nikon.

The latitude of this camera is excellent.

I love the 11fps.

The ISO range is helpful - but I tend to not stray into the extended range because most of my clients want the sharpest, clearest images possible.

I love the ergonomics, weight and size.

The auto-focus and metering options are great and work well.

The image quality is superb.

I'm thrilled to have my aperture dial back (Canon doesn't have that - I love this design feature of Nikons - the little dial right below the shutter release that you can use to adjust aperture in manual mode).

And so far it has been as reliable and sturdy as my F5.

The drawbacks are very few; my issues are really more comparisons with the things about Canon that I think they do better.

I've always lamented the lack of better eyecup upgrades. My 2nd degree is a BA in Film Production and I am trained as a cinematographer.
I can get cinema eyecups for my Canons. Which are superior in comfort. But not for Nikon.

I wish Nikon would add the third strap location on the bottom of the camera. I use as hand strap for shooting in the OR and I have to add an additional "plate" with the strap mount to the bottom of my Nikon.

And it's a little bothersome - but more a psychological thing - that if you leave the battery in the camera - it never shuts off really. The top LCD shows the number of exposures shot and available. You'd think that would time-out to save battery power. But it doesn't. It's good practice to not leave your batteries in if you're not shooting. But I worry about location shoots - like in the OR - where I can't bring extra batteries in - I have to be carefule sometimes with battery conservation.

Those are really small things.

In all - without question - this is the best camera I've ever shot with.

My Canon 1Dx is collecting dust now.

I bought it new from the B&H body shop last December, when I put the battery into the camera first time the camera shows the battery already took more than four hundred photos which is kind of weird. [*] But Nikon D4s is a excellent camera which I strongly recommend!

high iso performance is the best

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have Nikon D810 and D4S cameras
I have use them for landscape panoramas,
I have used D810 in day D4S in night time
I used D810 a big pano in Athens at noon 890 pictures, result is perfect
but I can not use D810 blue night time because I need exposure 15 second f 11 for every frame,
that's mean if I take a pano that are 150 pictures
I will need 45 minute for this but light will change in whole frame
I am using D4S for (night time) with 3400 ISO or 6400 ISO my exposure 1/2 second f 11
I have finished same pano just less 3 minute and result is perfect (of course I have correct noise reduction on CS6)
yes D4S frame is small then D810 but is not big deal I can use it in night by my hand so fast

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this D4s to replace my well used & aging D2x. Although I am an advanced amatuer, I wanted another "pro body" because of the weather protection that a pro body provides--the D2x literally spent months at a time in wet & dirty envirements, over a 100,000 shutter clicks, and showed minimual wear & tear and no moisture or dirt issues. I hope for the same with this model. I chose the D4s specifically because of the high ISO improvements, video capabilities, high continuous shooting, & frankly, I find that the larger size camera feels better in my hand.

Before I start I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the full frame format. I knew I would move to F.F. eventually, but I wasn't sure how it would change my shooting habits. My impression is that I can see much better through the viewfinder & I intend to rely much more on origional composition than I did previously with "crop & post process". I think it will make me an over all better photographer.

The high ISO is a vast improvement over my old camera. I was astounded to see that the camera will take an decent shutter speed image almost by candle light. Photos at ISO 3600 are fairly presentable. Photos at ISO 25600 are at least photographs & thats the most you can hope for some times. I have set one of the shooting "banks" to shift to high ISO with a minimum acceptable shutter speed of 125 to take advantage of low light situations. The video will also shift to high ISO when required. Again, sometimes "a" picture is better than "no" picture.

The video is beautiful but I have yet to see it on a large HD tv because Nikon does not include a HDMI to mini HDMI cable with this camera. The video process would probably be good when taken from a tripod & then edited later. My set up seems to "shift hard" when focusing or refocusing, but I hope that my technique will improve with time.

I have not used either of the high frame shooting modes although I expect them to work as well or much better than my old D2x. I can't imagine that I will need the 11 fps speed, but when choosing the best photo, more is always better.

The reviews have several complains that I need to address. The camera is heavy, although so is the D2x and so I am used to it. It is certainly not too heavy to keep me from backpacking with it. Weight is something that can feel almost reassuring.

I have read a review or two about the "buttons falling off". I can't imagine that happening, but the fit & finish of this camera is what you would expect from a $6k body.

I thought that I might have to replace my old lenses to take advantage of this body & I can tell you that my 13 year old Nikon 28-70 2.8 takes a beautiful image through this body. It may be more to do with the lens, but the colors & saturation from this camera are beautiful--again, a noticable difference from the old D2x. The focusing does seem to hunt a little in low light, but most of the time it is a very fast focus.

I have also read complains about the shutter noise & my opinion is that is has a "nice sound", not too loud or anoying... almost a "firm" clap.

Lastly, there were "complaints about the XQD slot. I thought that perhaps I would need to buy an XQD card, but I've found that the Compact Flash slot is more than adaquate for my purposes. Good Old B&H included a 32 gig card with the camera, but it seems to use my old collection of C.F. cards just well. The XQD slot may come in handy in the future, but as for now the setup seems just fine.

I was also concerned about reports of "banding" on the images.... the ISO 100 photos I took last weekend showed nothing of the sort. I did see some horrible (??? I don't know what) when taking photos at ISO 3600, but I relate that to my inexperience with the camera.

All in all, I am well pleased with my new D4s and intend to spend the next 10 years preserving memories.

I use it for portraits and in very low light situations such as on stage. Upping the ISO is no problem and there is not a lot of noise. I moved up from the D-3 and the new features are great. Just wish I could have continued to use my D3 batteries for the D4s - you cannot.

I shoot Ballroom Competition and the dancers are lightning fast. The auto focus system on my D4s can certainly keep up with them. Built like a tank! The battery can last me over 6000 shots before I need to change it.

High ISO performance is outstanding! I have printed 24x36 images with ISO 4000 and I can't find any grain on my results.

Check out my pics. Shot with the pro Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII Zoom.

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the Nikon D4s, in May, 2014, mainly for wildlife photography. In lowlight conditions, the camera works miracles. I couldn't be more happy. Recently, we returned from a 8 day safari in Botswana, where others in my photo group, were using the Nikon D4s, and also praised the camera. However, the issue that two of us had was the Watson Battery Pack, which I see now is a "freebie" with the purchase of the camera. Only after a year and half of use, the battery failed, and this happen to another person on our trip. Luckily I had the Nikon EN-EL18a battery, which holds a charge with continuous use for a day or two before I had to charge it again. Unfortunately, I had purchased the Watson battery.

It is fast, it is durable, it is well sealed and most of all.....this is the most well rounded, shoot everything from A to Z camera on the market. From Sunrise to Sunset, portraits, macro, wildlife, sports, landscapes, bright light or no light, this camera will not disappoint. Well done Nikon.

This is a new world for me and I am thrilled with the results I am getting with this new camera. I primarily use the D4s for sports photography. For me, I find the greatest features to be the low light and auto focus capabilities to make all the difference in the world from my D7000 This also results in more keepers. If you are able to purchase this camera it is all worth it.

I start with my little D90 that i still use, great little camera by the way. But i jumped right into this BA camera with no issues I've slamming beautiful images out of the D4s for a year now been published and winning awards with my Night photos. I sometimes shoot at 10,000 ISO for dreamy photos at night and i get No noise, i also use the 24-70 2.8 Nikkor lens. Never used the video on it nor will i ever must likely. Love the jpeg hdr and photo stacking in camera that allows raw to stay raw, it is wonerful camera great for action as well never miss a shot and the sharpness is beautiful

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this camera to use when I take photos at horse shows ... Reining events, in particular. In these events, the rider is dressed western style (cowboy hat, fancy shirt, etc.) and the horse/rider perform abstracted cow handling maneuvers. It is often said to be the Western version of Dressage.

In any case, it is an event with lots of action and precision. The regional shows are usually held in arenas with very poor (low) lighting and the organization ... or the owners ... usually frown on the use of flash ... lest we spook one of the horses. My hope for this camera was that it be able to give me good performance at high ISOs and I was counting on it's ability to take photos in rapid sequence to capture "that moment" when the horse switches leads or the best part of a long slide.

I have been very pleased with the results:

              1. This camera takes very clean photos photos at ISO 25,600 ... or even above. If a little noise does appear, it seems to be easily subdued in photoshop.

              2. At 11 frames per second, I get plenty of photos to sort through :) and rarely miss that shot I am looking for. One needs to keep lots of memory handy, especially i you shoot RAW as I do :)

              3. The autofocus is fast, as it needs to be in this situation. Where this shows up most is when a horse is coming towards me at about 30mph as I wait to capture his stop.

I use this camera with a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 zoom so I need to be sure not to skip any of my appointments at the gym. This combination weighs about 6 lbs .... which seems heavier as the day draws to an end. It is good to keep fit. And the weight has its advantages; it provides a stabilizing factor.

This camera does what I had hoped. I am very happy with the results. I recommend it very highly.

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The question is: "What can't this camera do" when it comes to photography? I use this camera mainly for Nature, Landscapes, Sunsets and the like. Sometimes animals will stand still for only a second, or that Military plane is too fast, but they can still be photographed.

Great photos in any situation. Shutter lag is slight annoyance. Maybe I have yet to figure out how to override it. I still keep the D3 to deal with such situations.

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I upgraded from a D700 and this thing is just stupid (in a good way). When I wield this beast with my 24 1.4, I feel like it can conquer any type of low light situation. The sensor captures a breathtaking amount of detail reguardless of how dimly lit your environment may be. Paired with the 70-200VRII, the thing is like a machine gun around your neck with it's 11fps of tack-sharp super fast autofocusing goodness. I have yet to experiences any situation where I needed a flash. The camera feels very solid, yet light for its size (when compared to my old D700+grip). The price was a little steep, but I have no regrets with this purchase. After reading reviews upon reviews on this camera, overall I found it to be a lot better than I though it would be, and am very happy that I decided to stay with Nikon rather than switch to Canon for the 1DX.

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Most of my photography is sports photography. That involves being outdoors in the sun, rain, snow and night. Although I have only had the D4s for a short time, it has met or exceeded my expectations in all of the above. I am really impressed with the low noise at higher ISO settings. Quite a step from my D90. The only thing that made me pause before purchasing this body was the price, as photography is only a hobby. But, my frustration of missing the good shots won out.

I recently converted from Canon and couldn't be any happier. Many cameras are amazing given the perfect light conditions.. how many are amazing in low light conditions? One, The Nikon D4S. I often find myself in low light conditions and have to use whatever natural available light is present to me and this camera is simply the best at interpreting it and rendering it.. It's almost not to be believed. More Pros: upgraded focusing ability in low light, lighterweight, ergonomic fit to the hand, color conrtrast in low light.. on and on. The D4S is worth every red scent you will work to purchase it. I love it and I've been shooting professionally for 22 years. I will be buying another one.

Comments about Nikon D4S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This is hands down, the finest camera I have ever used. It feels solid and the low light capabilities are unbelievable! I have taken photos of night scenes that should not have come out let alone be usable! the shutter speed is mind blowing and the group focus feature makes it almost impossible to miss your shot! I haven't tried to stop a bullet yet, but it's on my list of things to try.

16MB seems to be the perfect size. I can blow up to poster size with no degradation in quality. If I want to do a wall photo, I will use the D800 I gave my son after I realized I would rarely ever want to pick it up again.

Pricey? YES! But if you are looking for a perfect action camera that takes razor sharp photos with unbelievable low light capabilities AND 11+ FPS, this is your camera! Did I mention the video? It is cinema quality!

I am SO GLAD I have never skimped on buying quality lenses!! It has certainly paid off with this camera. Stick a 50mm f:1.4 on this and go have some fun in the dark.

Yeah, I know it's not for everyone, but I contend that it's more than just a Pro only camera. If you have the means, you will not be sorry with your choice.
