I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by Dave Dugdale and the other by Philip Bloom. Both of which produced very in depth reviews on the GH4. I was then able to get a good visual of what the camera could do. Obviously, I was impressed. I then made the choice of not waiting on the "other cameras" to come out because of the overwhelming amount of features that the GH4 has. Some of these features will probably never be put into a prosumer level Canon, focus peaking and zebras not to mention having a cool "party trick" of internal 4K. Nikon may include some of these features but I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. The camera from the video side of things is phenomenal. The amount of detail that you get from the 50/100/200mbs 1080p footage is outstanding. Then you look at the 4K and cinema 4K(only 24fps) footage and it's like getting glasses for the first time. All of the detail that is captured in the 4K footage is breath taking. Some of the first 4K "test footage" clips that I shot were of a series of soy bean fields that were on rolling hills. At f8 (35mm eq of f16) with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4(50mm f2.8 eq), I was able to see ants crawling on a leaf of a soy bean plant that was approximately 10ft away from the camera! That made me feel very content with my purchase. ;-DThe stills side of the camera is great as well. Although I purchased it primarily for the video capabilities, I have been very pleased with the photographs. My first outing with it as a stills camera was at my daughters birthday party 2 days after it was delivered to me. I was able to get some quality pictures with it. A family member of mine that uses full frame sensor cameras was even impressed by the stills that it produced. The auto focus was/is extremely quick. I have yet to have the GH4 "hunt" for focus. The focus with the 25mm 1.4 lens can still get very shallow (See pic). Its not as shallow as a D810/610 or 5D/6D can get but it very respectable. Again very pleased.I have not tested the low light capabilities of the GH4 yet but I DO KNOW that it is NOT the a7s. I haven't, as of yet, seen anything in the GH4's footage that has me regretting my purchase at all.It took me about an afternoon to get use to the menus and where each feature was located. Now, 2 weeks later, I can just about change the settings blind folded. The camera itself is very user friendly. The EVF is an awesome feature too. Now it doesn't matter how bright the shooting environment is, the EVF is there to save the day. For video, using the EVF gives you another point of contact with the camera that helps you stabilize the it.The battery last forever. All day shooting has finally arrived. I have, on several occasions, shot video for approximately 6+ hours WITHOUT changing the battery. This will definitely benefit the time lapse shooters as well. If they need to hike in to a remote location to shoot, it will allow them to maintain a small, compact gear bag even for an extended multiple day trip.CON:The audio from the Rode Video Mic Pro does produce some nasty digital noise. If you cut out the 14-18khz in the audio EQ in post then its tolerable but still noticeable to trained ears. I believe that Panasonic has recently found a fix and will correct the issue if you send the camera back to them for a few days (Sept 2014). For the footage/shoots that require solid audio, I only use the camera's internal audio for syncing purposes anyways so its not that big of a deal to me.If you are currently considering getting this camera, you need to order today. It has very few limitations/cons compared to the amount of features/pros that it offers.I am currently using the GH4 for b-roll and interview purposes for outdoor industry entertainment as well as video shorts for my church.

I'm the lead producer at a digital agency and we produced more than 100 videos last year on dslr's and REDs.This review is based on two major flaws that will keep me from using this camera as my day-to-day travel camera or integrating it into our digital workflow. I wanted to love it. I pre-ordered it and have used it extensively. If you are someone that keeps their camera in a glass bubble -- then my review is not applicable. However, if you use your camera outside the studio then be warned.First, the weather sealing is non-existent. In just a minor drizzle, water got into the SD card slot, battery compartment (which is open to the sensor area), and the bottom connectors. We've been using Canon's and Nikon's for years and this is at the bottom of the list. Even the consumer grade ($1k range) Canon's are better sealed. After a couple months of use, the main sensor corroded and in Panasonic's terms the camera is a "total loss." This means they offer to sell you a refurbished unit for barely any less then you can buy a new one on B&H.Second, the panasonic service department in Texas is a huge waste of your time. After sending it to them I had to call them every day for multiple weeks just to find out what the status was. They provide you with a dedicated customer service rep -- who will ask for all your contact numbers and then quickly start call screening you to delay the process. I found the only way to access my rep was to start calling in and asking for supervisors -- I eventually landed with the operations manager and he sped up the process. After two months -- I was able to order a replacement camera for their pitiful discount.

Innovative Video Camera that Still Holds Up Today

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have owned 2 GH4's for about 2 1/2 years now. Primarily, I am an event/wedding videographer that, at the time, was looking for an alternative to the elderly Canon DSLR video line up.

Fast forward to today, and the 4K video and 96 fps slow motion in 1080p are still great features at the price point. I'm not a huge fan of MFT and have used a Metabones speed booster and Canon EF mount lenses since I started using the camera. I'm not sure I could have used the camera without the speed booster as lighting conditions are very inconsistent sometimes on wedding shoots and other events (booster adds about a stop). Even with the added stop, this really isn't a low-light camera. That said, I ALWAYS bring lights to events and rarely have to worry about it.

Audio-wise, don't buy that stupid, clunky accessory! You can get a small Tascam or like recorder and run it right into the camera via the jack for way less money and with better control and quality.

The 4K stands up wonderfully. The batteries last for hours with the right settings (I use 2 1/2 batteries on an 8-hour shoot typically). The camera has a well-known quirk where it very occasionally will freeze up and will do so once every other shoot for me when over cranking at 96 fps (Reason for only 4 stars). I use SD cards that are at or over 95 mbps to mitigate those issues. I also was too lazy to upgrade the firmware in the time I have owned it, so this problem may have gone away with upgrades.

Today, there are many competitors that offer the really slow motion and high resolutions. I'd say that the Sony A7s now out performs the GH4, but it is almost twice the cost. The GH5 is also coming out soon and that excites me. If it's anything like the GH4 in terms of being rugged and ahead of the curve, I'll be all about it.

Lumix DMC-GH4 -Great Cam!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the camera specifically for video! Used it for the first time to film the women's cycling land speed record on the 12th of Sept, 2016 at the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah(which was 147mph!--mind you that's on a bicycle). I'll say it was really hard to use the viewfinder on the bright salt flats of Bonneville--either had to be covered with a blackout cloth or preset and shoot at f8 or f11 to make sure everything was in focus--I used it for the POV stuff and we had two C300s shooting with 1200mm panavision lenses. I shot at 4k with a metabones adapter and canon lenses and believe the images should cut really well with the C300 images. Kind of amazing when you think that you could shoot a GH4 along side something like a c300. We did have a rig for the cam and a rode video mic pro-directly into the cam

I have 3 GH4 cameras and love them, even in low light

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I shoot weddings and some commercial work. I've been working with DSLR and BMD cameras for years, and I still shoot with my Production Camera all the time (It's 100% the best camera in it's price range for video work), but my M-F job calls for Product Photos and this lead me to the GH4, which I originally only got for Product Photos and then ended up buying two more for filming weddings with.

Luckily I have not had any issues with the GH4, and all 3 cameras have been amazing. The internal 4k is awesome, and since I deliver in 1080 for most of my projects, I get two shots for every one camera.

The GH4 is also not so bad in low light, yes it's not anywhere near as good as the Sony AS7II which is a low light machine, but it's proven to be useable with low ambient lighting and shooting at 1600 ISO.

The best thing about the GH4 has to be the amount of accessories available for it, the price of the Glass, and the fact that it's not breaking my bank to have Lenses, Steadicams, Bodies, Cards, Batteries, etc. I got my full wedding gear package for under 10k, which is what I would have spent on 3 Sony AS7II bodies.

22 Days in the Amazon Forest, 3 Days in the California Sun, 2 Snow storms in DC. This camera has earned its place in my heart. Add a speedbooster and it makes up for the ISO performance. I have never had it overheat, Never Shut down, never  failed to record. I have used the YAGH to live stream via SDI to a Blackmagic Mixer for over 4 hours.  This camera alone has made me reconsider my canon loyalty. I will definitely get the GH5.

Fabulous Camera & Videographic device

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I am really impressed with this big little camera. I shoot stills and video equally often, but sometimes wait too infrequently between photographic bouts. I expected a steep learning curve and worried, thus, about how capable I would be using this camera when I must fulfill some need, quickly. But Lumix GH4 has an easy to understand menu, and there is much free information on the internet and youtube to help with easy operation. In fact, even without internet, the learning curve is quite manageable. The menu even has an option to stream of brief set instructions on the view screen to help remind the user what the function of each option provides. This menu instruction option is helpful and easy to use. I am also impressed with the diversity of uses available to me with just a brief modification of button changes. I was quickly able to video record my swarm of honeybees taking off from my observation hive and did a terrific time lapse series of stills during a stunning fog bank episode at sunset over the ocean. Both camera-use events turned out better than I dreamed! Remarkable really. Does this camera has no flaws? None that I am bothered by, that is for sure. I think it is by far the best camera I've ever owned. I hope to develop great familiarity with this instrument, and am currently plotting all my future uses (at the moment, there are many). I've great reverence for the Gh4, and relish its potential to deliver!

I purchased for use with video. I tried buying at a different place for less money, but it wound up being way too much hassle. I canceled my purchase with the other company because I know B&H always delivers a fair price for the item they say they have, unlike other companies.

I've had a Gh1 and Gh2 and they've always been my favorite cameras to use. Even though I've had other brands of cameras the Panasonics have always been my favorites. So far I'm very happy with the GH4 and have been very happy with the video. Even the photo function for the Gh4 rocks.

What's with the PINK highlights?
We have been using the camera for about seven months in a variety of settings (studio to landscape). Overall the performance of the camera has been very good. However, when in ISO 100 and taking a shot with strong highlights, they come into Adobe Bridge and/or Lightroom as a flat pink color. The images are basically garbage at this point. I've seen that several others note the same issue.

I can't give it a 1 as it is a very nice camera. I can't recommend it to others with such a serious flaw (see attached image).

I love using the manual settings for custom exposures and the auto focus (when I need it) is awesomely accurate and fast.

Amazing camera in a compact body

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Its basically a shrunken down DSLR. m43 sensor and EVF allows a lightweight camera body and very lightweight high quality lenses. Image quality and dynamic range (highlight/shadow recovery) are simply fantastic. The physical layout is very comfortable with dials and switches in very convenient places. The face recognition focus works wonderfully well. Battery life is also excellent.
The other side of this camera is the video capabilities. IT IS A MONSTER. The 4k quality this things captures is breathtaking and on par with MUCH more expensive systems. The HD is fairy ordinary but OH MY GOD the 4k is stunning (turn down the sharpness and saturation tho) Whats more, its still one of the only cameras that can put out 10bit 4k over the HDMI cable, pair it up with a decent 4k recorder and your compact video production prayers have been answered. It give excellent skin tones (fuji/panasonic are currently the colour kings!) and natural general colour reproduction. I can only imagine what Panasonic bring out next to top this.

I love this camera. I've been watching Panasonic for years through the GH2 and 3. The GH4 is fun to use, and incredibly user friendly. Caleb has a great 4 hour tutorial that I highly recommend. A friend showed me his new Sony and I so prefer the image of the GH4 to it. Panasonic comes through.

I'm used to Canon camera so this Panasonic offering takes a bit to get used to. The M4/3 sensor and lenses kind of throw me, but I'll figure it out. It's not as good in low light as I would like, but the controls and long battery life more than make up for it.

Worst customer service ever

By Thomas

from Niagara Falls, ON

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have owned my GH4 for about a couple months before I realized the micro-HDMI port was shipped to me broken. I had to pay 120 bucks to get it fixed (should be covered by Panasonic as it seems a lot of owners have this issue.) After 8 months of owning it the "sensor frame" moved in the interior (I never dropped or mishandled the body once). The process to get this fixed has been an incredible arduous and excruciating process. Panasonic explained that the service would be free, so I sent it in for repair. There's no way to check the status of your repair online, so I had to contact the support centre directly and wait a week for a response. After that, I received my camera back and now the device wouldn't let me take a photo. After calling and being on their online support chat for a long time they determined the unit would have to be sent back for repair. After asking for free shipping (due to the fact that they should have had adequate quality control measures in place to prevent sending a fixed camera back BROKEN). They said they would get back to me within 48 hours. Four days later, I gave them a call. They said they would call back. 48 hours later I had to explain my issue over the phone again. Then ANOTHER 48 hours later I finally received my shipping label. Once I sent it in they replied within another week saying the HDMI port had an issue and it would cost $250 to repair, even though my GH4 was under warranty. After pleading to them that I had had NO issue with the HDMI after it had ALREADY BEEN REPAIRED by Panasonic... They argued back that it MUST have been my fault, even though before I sent it in the first time I was having 0 issues. So now, upon paying the astronomical fee, It has been in the shop for weeks. Upon sending them an email asking them what the status of my repair is... I have heard no reply. I have tried contacting them again and it has been another 2 days with no reply. I don't know how this process will end but I am frankly scared to keep my GH4 after I get it back. If this had happened during a work season then I would simply have no camera. Completely unacceptable how terrible their service is, and I will be spreading the word to stay away from Panasonic products.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I use the product everyday for professional video production. It was a great upgrade (and long awaited) from a DSLR - Rebel. The video quality is great and I was pleasantly surprised by the audio quality. Our mic's malfunctioned and we had to go with the audio caught by the included shotgun mic. I was very pleased with the quality
