I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by Dave Dugdale and the other by Philip Bloom. Both of which produced very in depth reviews on the GH4. I was then able to get a good visual of what the camera could do. Obviously, I was impressed. I then made the choice of not waiting on the "other cameras" to come out because of the overwhelming amount of features that the GH4 has. Some of these features will probably never be put into a prosumer level Canon, focus peaking and zebras not to mention having a cool "party trick" of internal 4K. Nikon may include some of these features but I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. The camera from the video side of things is phenomenal. The amount of detail that you get from the 50/100/200mbs 1080p footage is outstanding. Then you look at the 4K and cinema 4K(only 24fps) footage and it's like getting glasses for the first time. All of the detail that is captured in the 4K footage is breath taking. Some of the first 4K "test footage" clips that I shot were of a series of soy bean fields that were on rolling hills. At f8 (35mm eq of f16) with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4(50mm f2.8 eq), I was able to see ants crawling on a leaf of a soy bean plant that was approximately 10ft away from the camera! That made me feel very content with my purchase. ;-DThe stills side of the camera is great as well. Although I purchased it primarily for the video capabilities, I have been very pleased with the photographs. My first outing with it as a stills camera was at my daughters birthday party 2 days after it was delivered to me. I was able to get some quality pictures with it. A family member of mine that uses full frame sensor cameras was even impressed by the stills that it produced. The auto focus was/is extremely quick. I have yet to have the GH4 "hunt" for focus. The focus with the 25mm 1.4 lens can still get very shallow (See pic). Its not as shallow as a D810/610 or 5D/6D can get but it very respectable. Again very pleased.I have not tested the low light capabilities of the GH4 yet but I DO KNOW that it is NOT the a7s. I haven't, as of yet, seen anything in the GH4's footage that has me regretting my purchase at all.It took me about an afternoon to get use to the menus and where each feature was located. Now, 2 weeks later, I can just about change the settings blind folded. The camera itself is very user friendly. The EVF is an awesome feature too. Now it doesn't matter how bright the shooting environment is, the EVF is there to save the day. For video, using the EVF gives you another point of contact with the camera that helps you stabilize the it.The battery last forever. All day shooting has finally arrived. I have, on several occasions, shot video for approximately 6+ hours WITHOUT changing the battery. This will definitely benefit the time lapse shooters as well. If they need to hike in to a remote location to shoot, it will allow them to maintain a small, compact gear bag even for an extended multiple day trip.CON:The audio from the Rode Video Mic Pro does produce some nasty digital noise. If you cut out the 14-18khz in the audio EQ in post then its tolerable but still noticeable to trained ears. I believe that Panasonic has recently found a fix and will correct the issue if you send the camera back to them for a few days (Sept 2014). For the footage/shoots that require solid audio, I only use the camera's internal audio for syncing purposes anyways so its not that big of a deal to me.If you are currently considering getting this camera, you need to order today. It has very few limitations/cons compared to the amount of features/pros that it offers.I am currently using the GH4 for b-roll and interview purposes for outdoor industry entertainment as well as video shorts for my church.

I'm the lead producer at a digital agency and we produced more than 100 videos last year on dslr's and REDs.This review is based on two major flaws that will keep me from using this camera as my day-to-day travel camera or integrating it into our digital workflow. I wanted to love it. I pre-ordered it and have used it extensively. If you are someone that keeps their camera in a glass bubble -- then my review is not applicable. However, if you use your camera outside the studio then be warned.First, the weather sealing is non-existent. In just a minor drizzle, water got into the SD card slot, battery compartment (which is open to the sensor area), and the bottom connectors. We've been using Canon's and Nikon's for years and this is at the bottom of the list. Even the consumer grade ($1k range) Canon's are better sealed. After a couple months of use, the main sensor corroded and in Panasonic's terms the camera is a "total loss." This means they offer to sell you a refurbished unit for barely any less then you can buy a new one on B&H.Second, the panasonic service department in Texas is a huge waste of your time. After sending it to them I had to call them every day for multiple weeks just to find out what the status was. They provide you with a dedicated customer service rep -- who will ask for all your contact numbers and then quickly start call screening you to delay the process. I found the only way to access my rep was to start calling in and asking for supervisors -- I eventually landed with the operations manager and he sped up the process. After two months -- I was able to order a replacement camera for their pitiful discount.

Great bang for the buck. Great camera!!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I've been using this camera mostly for HD music video shoots. Recently I have been outputting 4K 10 bit 422 to a Atomos Shogun as a B camera along with a Canon C300 MKII. While the Cine V log footage is a different flavor from the Canon Log the ability to grade these two shots is a big plus. A great investment. I have earned my investment back several times with this little workhorse.

After filming some friends I left this camera outside on a tripod. Yep, 4 hours later it was pouring rain and an hour after that is when I realized. It literally could not rain have been raining harder and this camera and 35-100 2.8 sat out there completely exposed for almost an hour. Damage? None. If anything the camera and lens are cleaner. 100% true. Now I'm half tempted to take it underwater.

Love this camera. Battery life is crazy, haven't got a second battery. the footage looks good unless you shoot in low light or if you have a dark spot in your shot artifacts might show up but other than that great quality for the price. light your shot.

Excellent video

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Second body for me they are so good. Using for video as another prime angle, it turns out a surprisingly good product. For all that goes onto Youtube and indie movies this camera can't be beat when paired with a good external sound recorder. Easy enough to use when setting focus and white balance and the blessed thing doesn't have a time limit on video length. Decent quality even past ISO1600.
I had doubts about MFT format but the sensor and lenses put a run for the money. With a metabones adapter you can throw your favorite glass on.
My only gripe is the crop factor in 4K, would have to resort to 1080 if needing the width.
It's light which is great when you want to use a non-tripod method to clamp or suspend the camera - and use Panasonic image app to control it.

using the GH4 for video w/ zoom lens

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have recently been using the GH4 for video, but I missed the power zoom feature of ENG style camcorders. Recently I tried the 145-175mm power zoom lens from Panasonic. While there is control of the zoom speed, it is not cinematic at all. I cannot ease-in to a slow zoom or ease-out at the end. I have recently obtained a Libec ZC-3DV remote zoom controller. It worked, but again not for smooth low speed zooming. There is some speed control for the zoom buried in the camera menus. I set it to L for low, but it did not seem to be a slow zoom for me. I guess there is a conflict here: photo makers want a fast zoom, while video makers often want a slow zoom.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

This is an absolutely amazing camera, for the money you can't do any better. I use it primarily for video, and the functionality is fantastic. The flexibility in terms of lens possibilities is great. You can find some solid native lenses, and if you shell out the money for an adapter and/or speedbooster you'll be pleasantly surprised with how many more options you have. The only downside with this camera is it's low light performance, but the aforementioned speedbooster definitely helps to this end.

The camera is pretty light, so a cage/shoulder rig/stabilizer is important, but if you're all about run and gun shooting, you can make it work so long as your lens has IS.

At any rate, if you're looking for a great camera for video without breaking the bank, I'd recommend the GH4 again and again :D

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I've been using the GH4 for a little while now, and it has been able to produce the images I want without too much effort. With so many options, with function buttons and such, I can be prepared for shoots beforehand. A lot of people complain about the GH4's lowlight capabilities, but most of them have been unfair comparisons or situations. If you know how to light a set or wherever you're shooting well enough, and you have it at the right ISO, plus a lens that goes below f2.0, you can still have really nice looking low light shots. I have been using it for one of my concept proof films recently, and I have enjoyed seeing the GH4's results while editing. The only advice I have for using this camera is to know what you're doing and know what you are shooting.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I've been using the GH4 for a while now.

I highly recommend it as it is indeed an awesome video camera.
96fps 1080p video sure is awesome and fun.

I'm very happy with the colors the camera gives and also how compact it is of course.

The only downside I would say is perhaps the low light abilities, going over 2,500-3,200ISO just gives a really bad image.

For it's price it's absolutely amazing!

I love my GH4, This is a solid micro 4/3 camera, I use it for 4k video in studio and on the road, and opted to get the Battery grip.  I now have a GH5 on preorder, and can't wait to see what Lumix has in store for that camera body!

Best Budget Film Camera Out There

By Gray

from undisclosed

Verified Buyer

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

This is one of the best budget filmmaking tools out there. I recommend purchasing a guide to learn how to use this camera to its full potential (i.e. Caleb Pike from DSLR Video Shooter's GH4 guide). I use it for event videography as well as short doc-style films. When comparing this to the Sony A7 series, the only downside of this camera is the micro four thirds, which makes it way worse in low-light. Another thing to think about if you shoot in situations with little control over lighting, is that you have to buy the V-Log function separately for around $100, whereas Log comes pre downloaded on Sony A7s.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I am very pleased with the GH4's performance. When used correctly this camera produces some very nice images. I also own the GH1 and GH2 cameras and still use them often. The GH4 has its own look and is complimentary to my two other cameras. Fortunately, I found the correct combination of proper in camera settings, lenses, lighting, framing and post production which make the GH4 shine. I would recommend this camera if you are willing to take some time and learn to bring out its full potential. Also, purchasing camera equipment for many years from B&H has always given me quality products.

If your looking for a good camera this is the one. this camera takes good pictures but even better video. It can show cinema 4K very high quality video. This camera is great for all levels of users, although takes sometime to get use to all the setting and feature this camera offers but any camera does. Definitely wouldn't hesitate to buy its worth every penny. It has really good battery life and can go a whole day shooting on one battery pretty much. I have attached a video so you can see the video quality of this camera but the entire video was not shot with this camera but most of it was.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I bought the Lumix GH4 mainly for the 4K video. I have been learning it for 2 months now and testing it with my Canon 5D mkIII. Although the menu is complex, the camera is capable of many things. In addition to 4K video it can do beautiful slow motion (96fps 24P) and the custom mode dial, C1, 2, and 3, allows you to set different ways of recording so you can quickly change settings on the fly to never miss a shot. The touch screen has many helpful short cuts for histogram, zebra and peak focusing so you don't have to go into the extensive menu to turn these tools on and off.
