An Almost Very Good, But not Excellent, 70-200mm Zoom

I'm not going to try to repeat all the information in all the stats and reviews of the Sony FE 70-200mm F/4 G OSS lens, as DXOmark, SLRGear, DPReview and Photozone have weighed in and many B&H reviewers have also expounded. My experience with it on my Sony A7ii and A7Rii very much agrees with Photozone's appraisal of this lens. I have rated it as 4 stars. But if I could, I would have rated it as 3.75, better than good, but not quite very good. It is indeed, as reviewers have found sharp in the center becoming somewhat softer toward the corners at 200 mm and F/4, but corner softness improves rapidly on stopping down. There is some distortion at all focal lengths; barrel at 70mm and pincushion at longer focal lengths. This is easily correctable in Lightroom. On the plus side, CA seems to be very well controlled, better than the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR which I used to own, and it is well made, and fairly compact, weighing in at about 840 g and 175 mm in length. So it is about the same weight and length as its Nikon counterpart. Filter size is 72mm on the Sony as opposed to 67mm on the Nikon. But the Sony also includes a collar, unlike it's Nikon counterpart, where the collar is optional. However, having owned the Nikon, I can honestly say that the Nikon was a very good to excellent lens and a much sharper and "useable" lens over all. Since I like to do close up photography, the Nikon, with it's maximum magnification of 0.274 was quite versatile in this regard. Not macro, obviously, but very useful to me with some image cropping. The Sony on the other hand has a "stingy" maximum magnification of only 0.13, half that of the Nikon, and it's close up capabilities are virtually nonexistent. I can make up for this by using a Marumi 330 +3 Achromat close up filter, but this is not a satisfying arrangement. So why am I opting for the Sony FE 70-200mm F/4 G OSS? After trading in all of my heavy Nikon equipment in favor of lighter weight, Sony mirrorless full frame cameras and compact lenses [owing to a neck with fused vertebrae and shoulders with bad rotator cuffs] I wanted to add a telephoto lens to my 21mm 28mm, 35mm, 55mm, and 90mm [macro] FE mount primes. What I really wanted was a native FE mount, compact, f/4 200mm prime or 180mm macro, with OSS and autofocus and 1 kg [or less] in weight. But, such lenses don't exist. I also didn't want to wait to buy the new FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM lens; word on the street is that it will cost $3K+ and it's 3.25 lbs. With my issues, this is unacceptable [and also, in my mind, defeats the purpose of a compact camera system; but I don't want to go off on a rant]. And I don't want to use non-native lenses with adapters. Nevertheless I am working with this lens and getting satisfying results. Consequently, the Sony FE 70-200mm F/4 G OSS was my best option going forward. So, there it is.

I got this lens 6 months ago and it was working fine. Didn't use it that much, all together on 6-7 occasions. Yesterday I took it out from my photo pack pack and it was broken in half!?! I really don't know how this happened. I didn't drop it and it didn't ever fall down. After online research, many similar cases like mine and even new out of the box lens had the same issue.

How it is possible that Sony made this big lens with the plastics connecting two parts?! Visiting Sony repair centre estimated cost is between USD 350-500. This is product should be fully repairable without additional charge, at least during one year warranty.

I am very disappointed with the quality, started to regret switching to Sony!

Just used this to take pictures at RodeoHouston in NRG Stadium. Low light and sitting up high. With the combination of ClearImage zoom and the A7RII, I was able to get some great shots.

A great lens on the A7II

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have only had this lens a few weeks and have had a lot of fun using it. It adds quite a bit of size to the camera, however, it still fits in my camera bag while attached to the camera. I have only used it outdoors in decent lighting so far and in those conditions it works beautifully. Works great with the A7ii.

Very Sharp Lens !

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I am a professional photographer in transition from Nikon to Sony. I still use my Nikon equipment on certain things but I use the Sony on the majority of my shoots. If you have a Sony E-mount full frame camera ( I have the Sony A7RII) then this is the lens for you. Its a $1000.00 cheaper than the f2.8 version. This lens is sharp all the way through it`s focal lengths with very little if any vignetting. What little vignetting you may get is easily correctable in Photoshop. It also works great on Sony cropped sensor E-mount cameras as well (I have Sony A-6000). It seems to be made very well and the focus and zoom rings are smooth and quite. The f4 aperture works great for me when shooting portraits outside in HSS. I would highly recommend this lens and so far has served me well !!!

Great Lens!

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I got this lens 2 weeks ago, along with the Sony A7R II. I must say, I had some high expectations for the system and they have been exceeded. I put this lens on and went to take photos at the Zoo and at the dog park. I was really impressed by the results of both shoots.

Catching my dogs in stills has always been a problem. They are always running...and they run fast. I was able to catch the action flawlessly. The wonderful faces they make when they are happy was captured perfectly.

At the zoo I was able to focus on animals through the bars without issues and capture their natural beauty. All around, I am happy with the results.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

With the new GM lens out now, this lens may get over looked. In fact, I canceled my GM order and went with this one in stead. It is plenty sharp and also has a nice size and weight.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I tried this lens out on a A6500 and can verify the AF is quick and accurate. This lens provides sharp, high contrast, images. Subject isolation is enhanced with pleasing bokeh. The lens has a high quality build and I like the fact the barrel doesn't extend during zooming.

I was in doubt between a 70-200mm f4 and a 70-200 f2.8 GM. For the difference of value I decided to buy the f4. I'm happy with the excitement. I recommend

Haven't had it all that long

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have only had it about 1 week therefore the 4 stars. Have played with it some and so far it is great, should go to 5 stars. I am using a Sony a7. Focus appears to be good and fast. Like the focus lock buttons. Do a lot of manual focus with the body.

I got the Sony because it's lighter than the Canon 7D, which I have 2 bodies and still like them for what I do. It is lighter than the Canon with 70-200 f2.8 by a bunch.

The out of focus isolation is good at f4.

However, I love shooting available light and at night hand held or on a monopod. Haven't had a chance to run the 70-200 at these conditions.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I use this lens primarily for landscape and natural subjects. Used with the A7RII it focuses neither front nor back at both ends of its focal length. Construction feels solid for such a light lens and the controls work smoothly.

An excellent lens with great build quality - very satisfied.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have used this lens for landscape shooting, and have not done any shooting yet in low light. As expected, it will be a little less effective at that time, but the advantages of very light weight and comparatively small size (compared to the GM 70-200)make it well worth it. I find that for outdoor sports and landscape, it renders images on a par with the L series 70-200 Canon lens I have been using, and every bit as sharp. Probably the perfect 70-200 lens for traveling, at least for me. At the current price, it is an excellent value. Very solid build quality.

Razor Sharp and Well Built

By Asynchronism

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Very, very happy with this lens - it's exactly what you'd expect from premium glass. Sharp, great colors, fast to focus, well built. I liked the additional zoom on the sel70300g, but preferred that this is not an extending/telescoping lens, and a constant f/4.

A big white lens isn't exactly stealthy, but people really DO seem to stay out of my way when I'm using it... and then also ask me how their camera works. (Take that as a positive or a negative...)

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Nice lens.  Nice price point.  Wish that Sony would release a 1.4X converter for it.  That would still give you f5.6 at  280MM.   Well lit action sports I am shooting more than f.5.6

Wish that we had some tele options for Sony, but understand why they are leaving this market for later.  Not complaining as there are plenty of good lens options for most shooting styles.  What's in my bag:  (Voitlander 12, Batis 24, Sony 35 f1.4, Loxia 35, Sony 55, Sony 85, Sony 70-200)  On my cameral most of the time is the Batis or Sony 55.

Wish list:  Batis 135, Sony Tele 400....and a joy stick or touch screen, two memory slots and bigger battery.

Would say that it has been a very good match on my A6300.

Great Lens

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I was going on an Alaska cruse and bought the Sony A6300 and wanted a good lens to match it. I was waiting for the f/2.8 to become available, but it was still on preorder so I purchased this lens. I'm not a professional but people have told me that the pictures that I have taken with this lens look professional.
When zooming to the 200mm the lens would be slow to focus or not at all, not a big deal just manually focused or zoomed out. the images have great detail, color and when doing portraits excellent bokeh.
