The PW PowerMC2 turns the PCB E640 into the easiest-to-use strobe I've ever handled. The manuals and PW Wiki can be a bit overwhelming, but this trigger is actually quite intuitive after experimenting with it for a little while.

Channels (ControTL or standard) and groups are selected from the E640's display. The E640 will automatically switch to second/rear curtain sync at the shutter speed set via the PW Utility. HyperSync works at full power, but not below.

The best feature is the wireless manual power adjustment. With tricky subjects or rapidly-changing exposures, like fire performers with burning props, you can keep up with the situation fairly easily. The AC3 Controller gives you 6 stops of control, the flash has a 9-stop range. This controller will shift the flash power away from the set point, so you can max out the AC3, then turn the flash up or down via the rear controls to establish the necessary maximum. With the maximum set, the AC3 will let you go 6 stops down in 1/3-stop increments. If you need to go lower, use the control panel on the E640 to reduce the maximum in 1/10-stop increments. This means you can hit the flash's full power range when combining the AC3 and E640 controls, but only 6 stops at a time via the AC3 alone. I have yet to run into a situation where I need more than 6 stops of wireless control, so as long as your initial setup is in the ballpark, this isn't a problem.

Hard to write about, but fairly intuitive to use. Only downside is that the flash's connection isn't terribly solid, mechanically speaking. A bit of a concern, but not a deal-breaker when you're talking about this level of control.

I'm portrait and wedding photographer, I use the MC2 with both Flex/Mini for Canon as well as Plus III as a "dumb" trigger. Hyper-Sync is more marketing for this item than truth. Yes I can get it to sync at 1/8000th of a second but only at full power. Anything less than full power and you get regular banding. Great if you only need full power, no so good if you want to actually shoot at a wide aperture with a large, close in light source. Yes you can make your aperture smaller but then that defeats the purpose of hyper-syncing.
I love the fact that it sits on top of the Einstein and has potential for less interference or point of failure. Point of failure, meaning loose cable or low battery. You have neither in to worry about in this case. That being said in true PocketWizard fashion in the middle of my first shoot with it the Plus III in my hot shoe decided it didn't want to work half way through the shoot. Battery was fine, channel, etc. were all fine but after about 150 frames the connection died. I swapped out the Plus III with another one and it was fine. Fine but frustrating, to pay gobs of $$$ for top gear and still have something always seems to go wrong with one of the PW's. To be fair in this particular case the MC2 was not the issue but I can't give 4 stars for overall spotty performance and unfortunately that's been PW's record over the last 5 years as a location photographer.

Switched from Cyber Command to PocketWizard

By PJ

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

The MC2, in my humble opinion, that works with the PocketWizard system on Paul C. Buff Einsteins is way more intuitive and far easier to use than the Cyber Commander. The MC2 itself has a cover over the delicate prongs that the PCB units do not have and makes storage a lot easier and safer.

But seriously, B&H in all of the $1000s I've spent at your store, this was without doubt the worst packaging I've ever seen from your shipping department. Usually the items I order are very well protected from the ravages of shipping. Not so this little module. Everything looked as if it had been run over by a tire. I was worried that with the package so crushed and no padding around the unit that it might have suffered. However, the unit seems to work fine; and I'm very glad to be the proud owner/user.

It's basically a plug and play solution to using your Pocketwizard TT's to control the light output of your Einsteins. Start out close and dial it in without leaving the camera.

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

The unit communicates well with my pocket wizard A3 controller. However, the A3 controller does not have enough range to move the power on the light through its entire range. If you reach the max limit of adjustment on the A3 and you haven't reduced or increase the power to the Einstein to its limit you need to do that manually. Not a big deal for me though.

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

I plugged MC2 into the Einstein flash head it worked first time in all modes including TTL. Software was up to date.

Also worked with Sekonic light meter with pocket wizard radio module.

My only concern is that the MC2 sits a little high in the socket and has the potential to be knocked out of the head if in a hurry ie wedding. In studio should be fine.

I use it with a PocketWizard MiniTT1. Had it transmitting for the first time in under a minute. Easy to use.

I like using my Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478DR Light Meter with it as it allows me to adjust the power on the Einstein E640 quikly across 3 zones independently while I'm metering the light without the need for an AC3 ZoneController.

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

I purchased the PocketWizard PowerMC2 due to my recent purchase of my 2nd Paul C. Buff Einstein 640. Like with my first Einstein 640 I purchased The PowerMC2 for reliability knowing that it will trigger my strobes each and every time. PocketWizard has yet to disappoint me.

Plug it in, select your channel & zone, your done. We have used the Pocket Wizzard MC2 for 3 events, approximately 3,000 flash triggers. No misfires, no hiccups. We were using the Calumet/Bowen radio slaves, they worked well but we had some misfires at small events, many misfires at larger events. So far none with the Pocket Wizzard Eisenstein combo. The bonus is plugging in the units without having to use sync cords.

No problems so far. I've used them with my Einsteins a couple of times already and had no problems figuring them out. They just work. The MC2 has a tethered bottom cap to protect the long pins when not in use, otherwise you just need to be careful not to damage them. I chose the MC2s over Buff's own units so I could use the Einsteins with other PocketWizard triggered devices if necessary. By the way, RIP, Paul C. Buff.

I purchased this unit as a kicker unit on my Einstein 640 which will supplement my Calument Travelite units. Works extremely well and like the simple setup.

My one complaint is that this is so tiny that it can get lost in all the photographic equipment. They should have provided a storage compartment that can be attached to the Einstein unit for storage after use. I don't want to leave it in the unit with the antenna sticking out.

I read the warning about this product on Paul C Buff's website so decided not to buy these and use my old reliable PW FlexTT5s to trigger my three Einsteins. After attending a Joel Grimes workshop awhile back and watching them in action, I bought three and put them to work So far, they have performed perfectly. Never had a problem with the FlexTT5s either but these don't require cables making setup in the field just that much faster.

Wasn't sure whether to get more Plus 3's for flexibility or the PowerMC2, but glad I went with the MC2. I plan to keep these receivers and my Einstein's for a long time because combined they really perform well.

I can take advantage of the Power MC2 by over powering the sun utilizing the Hyper Sync speed of my Einteins e640.
I can use my strobe lights at 4000th of a second and even at 8000th of a second when I use a wide open aperture as a f2.8.
I am not limited at 250th of a second which most DSLRs are set to. Now I have the freedom to freeze motion and create breathtaking images on broad day light !

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

I live and die by pocket wizards. I'm also a big fan of Paul buff gear, mainly for function ability, reliability, and adaptability. Bottom line the stuff works, is American made and if it breaks I don't have issues, oh and it's affordable. I bought two PowerMC2s to go with my Einstein's. I am used to paying a lot for my wizards so the over hundred price point doesn't bother me. Now here's the deal, if your a buff shooter like I am and love Einsteins (buy some you will) then having to purchase special radio poppers is worth it. Sure I could just plug two of the 4 wizards I own into Einsteins but I don't have the cleanliness and control I have with PowerMC2s. My next list item is a PW mini then I can take on the full remote control available through the PowerMC2s...... Don't think that's important? Then try adjusting your light power from the basketball floor. Or when it's atop an 8 foot stand and your scene is set with talent waiting. Not to mention I don't have to worry about these MC2s running out of battery power because they source power from the lights themselves. Not having a transceiver hanging from a synch cord is also pretty awesome. And...... Now, this only telated to me, but my additional wizards are also still available for large multi-light or multi-remote camera setups. In summary, if you own Einsteins you should buy these. Grab a PW mini too... And since your spending money, buy a zone controller. Call it a day.

After purchasing PW PowerMC2 I've used on my Alien Bees Einstein strobe without missing a beat. Probably one of the best purchases in terms of reliability and function when it comes to wirelessly using strobes for my photo sessions.

Paul C. Buff's Cyber Commander and CyberSync units are well rated, but having a PocketWizard Nikon MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 controllers, I wanted a compatible system to work with the Einstein E640 Flash unit. The PowerMC2 works very well with the E640. I also purchased the PocketWizard AC3 controller, which allows for independent control of each flash unit.

Worked just as advertised, own standard through flex & mini PW's but wanted dedicated equipment to kit with, FEC and tracking control make it so easy.

I use it with Einstein. Works fine, not troubles to communicate to AC5. I would add small plastic box to keep it somewhere on a flash body. Contacts are easy to damage, but it a problem of flash construction.
