I don't shoot video at all, so it's all about photography for me. I love this lens, it's sharp from f/4 at all zoom range, little to no vignette at all zoom range, easily controllable barrel distortion from camera (my 6D has the ability to fix it in camera for jpeg files) or by post processing software.
The IQ is awesome, just awesome. The IS is amazing, allowed me to take handheld photos in very low light conditions, and I've never thought they would be sharp, but IS is phenomenal! The build quality is newer-standard L lens by all means, creamy smooth and very wide rubber focus ring (grip is awesome with/without gloves), tough and resisting zoom ring - which is good IMHO to avoid creeping or any change even walking with the lens.
Weather sealing tested several times with b&w clear protective filter attached, tough, rugged, took it with me on rainy/windy days and did not afraid to use it under any conditions.

I love the whole focal length of this lens, there is no length it's bad at. From 16 to 35 this is an awesome sharp lens. The bokeh is quite good, I don't usually like bokeh for these focal length values, but when I do get a bokeh shot - it's really nice.

Cons: F/4. This is not a good night photography lens by any means. It's capable to take some low light street/in doors whatever photos, but F4 is just not enough to get some good stars action, by boosting the last stop by shutter you risk at blur, by boosting ISO you risking unusable noisy images.

BUT! IMHO, Instead of getting the 16-35F/2.8, just get this lens and with the change get the rokinon 14F/2.8 for night sky photography, because besides the fact that 16-35F/4 lens is super sharp, I love that this lens is 77mm thread, which allows you to share filters/filter holders between rest of your 77mm lenses, and I love the fact that 77mm filters usually costs less then 82mm.

I needed this lens for an event that required a wide view in a close tight space (10'x10'). So I bought this lens specifically for this event. For both my 5DM3 & 5DM4 in moderate low light using one shot mode with the subject about 7' to 10' away, the cameras/lens occasionally searches endlessly for its focus and won't lock focus at all. This happens especially at 35mm. Since I'm an event photographer, I need a very quick focus lock so the shutter will release. To get around this behavior, I had to widen out and zoom back in quickly to lock focus and release the shutter (not totally happy). I can't remember experiencing this behavior with my other L lens at all.
Nevertheless, the image quality is good.

Beautiful built lens and wonderful photo quality

By Mike K

Really love the lens. The wide angle on my 6d is amazing. Image stabilization is wonderful and the photos are great through the entire zoom range. This will obviously be my wide angle lens, but might be my "walk around" lens from now. Highly recommended.

I did not have the chance to use it very much yet. I like it very much so far!!! But I think it is not very optimized in my APS sensor... it probably works better in a full frame!

Best All-Around Wide Angle for Canon full-frames unless you have to have something wider than f4.

EF 16-35mm f/4 IS USM Lens

By Stuscale

This is an upgrade from the original 16-35mm f 2.8. I was a bit skeptical that the f4 could be sharper. So, after extensive testing and comparisons using a Canon 5D MK IV and a MK III, I'm pleased to find the image quality is significantly better. There is less distortion, sharper details, and an overall image improvement. My purpose for this lens is landscapes and architecture interiors and exteriors for real estate. I didn't see a need for f 2.8 so I opted for the f 4. Glad to have saved the dollars in cost and very happy with the results. If you are looking at this lens, ask yourself if you really need f 2.8.

Great lens. Very sharp

By Will is Bill

Very impressed with the image quality. I'm primarily capturing landscape images so the 4.0 aperture suits my needs. One of my first images taken with lens was featured on Flickr explore with 6.k views and counting so the lens has proven itself. In my opinion the lens is noticeably sharper than my EF 24-105mm.

Incredible!

I've had this for about two weeks, and so far I'm loving it! All of what I read prior to purchase has so far held true: incredible sharpness throughout the zoom and aperture range. For landscapes, I'm getting edge-to-edge sharpness with mid apertures, and for closeup flower shots I'm getting macro-like details at f/4. I'm seriously blown away. It works wonderfully with my 5D Mark III. I look forward to a lot of shooting with this beauty.

Occasionally Can't Lock Focus

Should have made the purchase a lot sooner!

Can't say enough about this lens. In addition to selling real estate I also do real estate photography. I've had the lens only a few weeks but the impact is huge. I'm now getting the jobs I didn't previously get! Lens quality is superb but what I appreciate most is the versatility. I can get the really tough shots from critical angles. It's freed me up and allowed me to be more creative. It's a workhorse. Should have made the purchase a lot sooner.

I use this lens for landscape and tight places. It is SUPERB SHARP and the IS work like magic. I'm able to hand hold it down to 1/15' with no shaking. I own Canon gear for more than 40 yr's and I'm a HAPPY camper. I also had many of my pictures displayed in Museums 24x36 and they looked good.

I just got back from a trip to SC where I used the lens exclusively taking shots of everything from landscapes to close ups. So far it is great. Does take some getting used to the perspective at 16mm but the resolution is fantastic. I could not be happier with this lens.

I really like this lens

By Keith

I have had a Canon 17-35 mm f/2.8 older lens for several years, but rarely used it because it didn't seem very sharp. This new 16-35 mm f/4.0 lens is much sharper at all apertures. It also has Image Stabilization (IS), which means I can still take hand held images in low light. The 2-4 stop IS more than compensates for the 1 stop smaller aperture of the lens. The old Canon lens was sold to the B&H used department to pay for a substantial portion of the new lens purchase price.

Money well spent!

By Jason

LOVE this lens. I'm using with a 5D Mark III and the images are so sharp! Very very happy with this lens. I've heard it's sharper than it's 2.8 brother. I've not compared, but I'm certainly happy with it. Well worth the investment for your wide angle needs. Using for real estate photography, gives just enough at 16mm on the full frame censor of the Mark III.

lots of love here

By Ingrid

I am just an amateur photographer but wanted a good, versatile wide-angle lens for when we go on vacations or I take landscape shots on our farm. My 50mm prime that I have been using for 7 years has its limitations and it was time to get a new lens for my Canon 5d mark III. This lens gave me some beautiful, sharp photographs and amazing color rendering. I can't give you stats or graphs as that is not the kind of photographer I am, but I can say that I am very happy with this lens. It's sharp throughout and gives a good wide angle with not much bend. It doesn't perform wonderfully in low-light but I was still able to get night shots with just a little blur (and no tripod). These photos were taken at 16mm except the photo with the palm fronds (35mm) and the photo at night (25mm).

This lens is a winner

This is a truly outstanding lens.  I use it with a 5Ds and the match is exceptional.  Sharpness is excellent, with very very minimal softness in the extreme corners at 16mm.  Stabilization is very important with the high resolution sensor of the 5Ds and greatly appreciated.

Very Sharp! Watch out for sample variation.Careful with hood

By Min

Really sharp indeed. Corner sharpness is on par with the Sigma 35/1.4ART prime lens which I compared side to side with this one in my studio test. This is remarkable! However, beware of sample variation, as I have come across a couple of copies which has uneven soft corners or chromatic aberration which indicate lens elements that are not perfectly centered and aligned. Also, in my travel use, for a couple of times I accidentally hit the disengage on the lens hood and had the hood come loose. I prefer the traditional lens hood as opposed to these "locking" version.
