This is one sick lens. Large aperture so great for shooting in low light. Long focal length for more candid shots. I use it for weddings and event photography and the super fast AF allows me to get the perfect shot every time.

I would recommend this to be used on a full framed camera, since a cropped sensor would give a 216mm focal length and could get a little too shaky handheld since it does not have IS.

The image I included was shot wide open (Canon 5D Mark II - 135mm - F2 -1/160 sec - ISO 800) to demonstrate the bokeh characteristics.

I bought this lens because so many people said they used it for sports in a gym with a crop sensor. That gets them close to 200mm without investing in a 70-200mm. I shoot XC, and Indoor and outdoor track and field. I use my 70-200mm with 5DMarkIII for running events and a 7D with the 135mm for field events. I've only used it once, so I'm not making a clear judgement yet, but I did not find it such a snappy focusing lens. I would say 50-60% of my shots were out of focus. I made adjustments to the focusing on the camera thinking that was the problem, but that yielded a rate of about 40-50% out of focus shots. Some were back focused so maybe a micro adjustment is needed? I did not just love this lens at first use like I did my 70-200mm. I plan on more use and an update of this review, but wanted to get my thoughts out.
It is lightweight, and sharp when shooting static subjects. Color is good, and I did not see any CA.

Awesome

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

Incredible lens. I shoot only prime lens (28mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4, and 85mm f/1.8). I started with the 28mm and 85mm on a Canon 60D (cropped sensor) for a few years years before upgrading to a Canon 6D (full frame sensor). I up my collection of lenses with the 50mm and 135mm. The 135mm is a huge jump in bokeh quality over the 85mm, but its a much heavier lens. Your arms will get tired faster and then camera shake becomes an even more of an issue as you struggle to hold the camera steady, but steady hands is incredibly important when you shoot with this lens wide open because the depth of focus is so shallow - a slight movement will put your subject out of focus and something in the background in focus. I've ruin a great number of shots this way, but when I do hit the subject dead on while shooting at F2, the results are pretty amazing. Its mostly an outdoor lens, but you can get some good shots in a big area indoor with enough light. I prefer my 85mm when shooting around people around the house.

A Very Rare "Must Have"

By Cory

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I've had most of the lenses within this realm and this one really is a cut above. It has that magical quality and then some and just allows you to have a different quality to your pics.
If you can live with the limitations of one focal length then this is the one to consider. Nothing's perfect, but I view not having this lens as a limitation.

I wanted a prime lens that would fit most of my needs. My uses are primarily portrait, but I also brought it to the March on Washington, and it was perfect.

My favorite portrait lens

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

The EF 135 f/2 is a fabulous lens. Produces a dreamy bokeh allowing isolation of the main subject. I love this lens for tracking active grandkids. Also, it's a great prime for landscape work. I am drifting more and more to primes because they are fast and lightweight when compared to big, heavy zooms.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

Amazing. 4 start because it sucks at focusing in low light. So don't try to use it in low light.. am I right!? Amazing otherwise. This lens changed my world.

Incredibly sharp and fast lens

By Russ

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

For use with the Metabones Speed Booster and Sony FS7. I conducted tests (HD 1920x1080) from lens settings at F2 through F11 using the 8x10 Digital Image Flow resolution chart with an Led lighting panel at 5500K, using camera Cine mode at native 2000 ISO, and color graded with Black Magic Resolve. This lens seems to slightly out-perform the Schneider 35mm T1.5 and 25mm T2.1 lens in resolution and contrast. Chromatic aberration is absent, and there are no induced artifacts on the Sony sensor.
The focus throw is very short and extreme care had to be taken to achieve good focus. I have never adjusted F-stop with the camera running, so the aperture clicks do not bother me.
Frankly I was blown away by the corner to corner sharpness of this lens.

Great for dark churches

By Danielle

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

This lens helped me deliver great ceremony shots from a dark church with super tall ceilings that I couldn't bounce my flash off of, and I'm so glad I had it in my bag. I started the ceremony using my 70-200 2.8L lens, but I switched to the 135 quickly to let in more light. The only thing that was tricky for me to get used to was the lack of internal stabilization- my 70-200 has it, so I've become accustomed to going a bit lower in shutter speed which I can't do with the 135 without risking blurry photos.

Love this lens!

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I got this lens a couple weeks ago and did a couple shoots with it for a couple people. This lens is so clear it's hard to believe, and boy does it have nice blur! I have a Canon cropped frame camera and it works beautifully on it. Yes, it makes it a bigger zoom, but it is not an issue for me in the least. This is by far my favorite lens. At the price point for a prime lens of this caliber, i would highly recommend it. My go to lens is my 70-200, but for portraits and sports, this will be the one I will grab most of the time.

A Great Addition!

By JBZ

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I had not given this 135mm F2 any consideration until recently. I stumbled upon many stellar reviews and I thought it would be a good lightweight alternative (although somewhat more limiting) than the 70-200 2.8 IS.

I've just had this a few weeks shooting it with my Canon 6D. The results are stellar. Although this lens has been around a while, it delivers on build quality, ergonomics, and sharpness. It is great for portraits and I will explore it's other uses.

I feel this is a very high value lens and I'm looking forward to years of use.

Wasn't sure about the focal length at first, but for the price it was worth a try. Turns out I love it, it's great for pet photography, sports, closer portraits (babies too). It's not very heavy either.

Love this lens. So sharp, fast focus, beautiful, creamy bokeh.. Just make sure you have the room you need, you have to be about 20" away at f/2 to get 1' in focus. So worth it though. Would buy this again and again. Say goodbye to distracting backgrounds.
