As a product photographer - I use the lens for my work, portfolio, and testing - for watches, jewelry, and other. In my profession this product is a must, it is light weight, durable, and very sharp, the 180mm macro also gives me more lens to subject distance allowing lighting flexibility and better control over reflective surfaces.

Other lenses require you to be too close to your subject where it may cast a reflection and/or shadow on the subject - also, it's more difficult to light adding time to an already tight and time sensitive deadline.

Overall, the bokeh is desirable, relatively fast given its focal length and purpose, attractive design, and well built in addition to what has been discussed herewith.

Additional features:

Dual "Focusing Distance Range" allowing for faster focus at close or farther distances.

Placement of "MF/AF" and dual "Focusing Distance Range" switches are convenient.

Rubber Focusing Ring is larger/wider and easier to use than most other lenses.

Product comes with a Lens Ring or Tripod Mount Ring.

Quiet focusing - Ideal in nature photography

Great for portraits

Lens diameter of ø72mm is common and is consistent with other products.

True 1:1 magnification - 2:1 with EF2X Extender.

This lens is great for quality no doubt, however I own a 100mm Macro 2.8 IS lens as well. Because the 100mm focuses much closer than the 180 and much faster, it is a much more practical lens.[...] no doubt the image quality is great and if using only for manual focus macro shooting, a perfect fit. Don't expect to get this if shooting weddings and have any better performance than with the 100mm lens. In fact, the slow focus is horrible. I have never experienced any lens that focuses so slow. Seriously. It is almost a joke how slow this thing focuses.

Clear Cut Purpose For This Lens

Comments about Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens:

This lens is a thing of beauty. Gorgeously made. Fine craftsmanship. Built to last.

I'll quickly cut to the chase regarding usage, however. Bottom line, this lens is for the serious macro photographer. Looking to get the closest, most finite details, this is the lens for you. But that comes with sacrifice. And a sheer determination to learn the ins and outs and quirks with achieving good shots using it.

The biggest hurdle you'll have to overcome— there is absolutely no image stabilization. To compound the issue, circumstances that often require longer exposure times may become tricky. The further you magnify, the more movement will present itself in your photos. In these cases, if your subject is stationary and you're able to use one, not only will you have to use a tripod, but additionally have to secure it with weight, use a remote trigger, and other tricks of the trade like setting your camera to silent mode to reduce mirror vibration. Any little thing you can do to keep the camera/lens from moving, you may be invoked to do to achieve the sharpest image possible. Like I said, though, this all goes with the professional aspect of macro. If you're serious, this lens is the cream of the crop and highly recommended. Some of the sharpest most amazing closeups have come from this lens.

For me, this lens is dedicated strictly for Macro. A healthy expenditure, I know. Some might call that a waste of finances. Especially if one doesn't shoot Macro often. As an alternative, one could save money, have a lens that has image stabilization, is easier to shoot moving subjects and use for everyday photography, and doubles as a Macro—the 100mm L-Series Macro. It's a good lens. I myself wanted the extra little bit the 180mm offered and didn't mind dealing with the additional finesse required. It's all in what you're looking for. Choose wisely.

Comments about Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens:

I have yet to put the lens through a full work out. But shooting some of the things that I purchase the lens for have been excellent. Good detail in the close up shots, nice detail in the long shot. The lens is not too heavy to hand hold. I like the product work that I shot with it in the studio lights. Looking forward to doing
more nature shooting, such as flowers and small bugs and things.

Comments about Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens:

Everything you could ask for in a Macro lens. Works exactly as eve one describes. Coming from the 100 macro you get much more focal length and even sharper. It is worth the money to just start with this lens instead of trying to finds a replacement. It just won't hopped If you are looking for a long focal length macro lens. Canon 180 3.5 L will not disappoint you at all. Little tough to hand hold but that is why there is mono pods and tripods. For now using 580EXII and working good for now. Would like to get Ex 24 lens eventually. Great buy, if you like Macro you won't regret this purchase. Also put an B&W UV Haze filter on it. A great purchase you will love out of the box.

Comments about Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens:

I ajm a careful buyer, painfully caraful. I borrowed from friends the Tamron 180 and the Sigma 180 (2.8). All three were very good. I could not use any without a tripod even using them as telephoto lenses. I decided for the Canon lens because i have a 5D Mark3 camera and since I really could not discern differences between the 3 lenses I opted for the one I knew would have optimal communication with my camera. I am very happy with my decision.

Purchased this lens to supplement my 100mm macro lens. This lens adds a bit of extra telephoto to capture macro subjects from a greater distance. In addition, this lens is a Canon "L" lens so its build and optical quality are excellent. Does exactly what I wanted.

Comments about Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens:

This is an out of the box review, and I am not impressed.
                - Focus ring has some play, as all AF lenses have, but not like Zeiss.
                - Hood is made of hardish plastic, not sure it will survive outdoor use for long.
                - Hood bayonet is difficult to engage. No comparison to Zeiss.
                - DOF scale (f/32) is vastly too narrow. Lines are about 1 mm from center line, but should rather be about 5 mm from it.
                - Infinity focus is about 1 mm past infinity mark.
                - Lens focuses another 2 mm into hyper infinity.
AF on my 5D mkII is slow, quite frequently hunts without success.

I bought it as a lens for moderate size wild life (lizards, grass hoppers, some flowers) to get a bit more distance between me and the subject, and with a bit more ease of use. Thus far I got out the Canon 300 f/2.8 IS, occasionally with extension ring to focus closer. AF performance is no issue, as I mostly focus manually anyway.

Bottom line: It seems to be the best long macro for a Canon body, but It sure is not a quality product. To qualify for that descriptor more attention to relevant detail would be necessary. Will be interesting to do some comparison shooting.
