I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

While the auto-focus of my copy was working well, this lens very rarely came off of my 50D. The Bokeh is beautiful, the soft focus and background blur around 1.4/1.8 is dreamy, and wonderful for child portraits.

Now that the AF motor is on the fritz I'm looking for a different lens that I can afford. I called a Canon Repair shop and was quoted $170.00 to replace the motor, and the guy said it was quite common...Just to have it go out again? No thanks!

Since my wife and I are still on crop sensors, I think I'll go with Sigma's 35mm 1.4, to get right around 50mm. I will keep this lens and use it manually, though if I had done more research and found that it had such issues, I would not have purchased. I love my AF.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I am not a big fan of portraits, but this lens suits well this purpose. It is a bit hard to focus, and even when I think my focus is perfect, the rendered image is a bit blurry. To get good focus and a nice bokeh, you should use it from f/2.8, in which case would have been better to buy the other lens (the 50 mm f/1.8) - much cheaper and delivers the same thing.

An Amazing Lens

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

Amazing lens. I am coming from my other two f/4 lenses kit lenses and the difference in quality is definitely noticeable. I love this lens and it is my go-to as of right now. I don't know how this one compares to the f/1.8 and the f/1.2 50mm siblings so I cannot compare it to the quality of those others. I now know why it is called the "Nifty 50"! Below are some pictures from a local car meet at my first outing with the lense!

This is the second time I have bought this same lens (lost my first one). It is a great lens for the money. I am very happy with the sharpness (better than my 28-70 L series for sure)

Great lens for portraits, extremely fast

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lens, is the fastest lens I own (at the moment). Wide open at f/1.4, the lens lets in a massive amount of light, but gives you an extremely shallow depth of field. I do NOT recommend shooting portraits wide open at 1.4 because it is likely that not all of your subject will be in focus. I usually stop down to 2.8 to shoot portraits... it still lets in a lot of light, and gives you extremely nice bokeh in the background to help separate your subject from the rest of the scene. The 50mm focal length is extremely versatile. Great for street photography, and great for portraits (especially on crop sensors because the focal length is actually 85mm, even better for portraiture). The only downside i have experienced with this lens is the autofocus system. The autofocusing is pretty quiet overall, and my issue isn?t with the sound of the autofocusing. This lens tends to fish around the scene to focus. It has gotten better after many uses, however. Still recommend this lens to have in your bag!

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

This is a great lens and with f/1.4 I get a lot of good shots in the night time. I mainly use this for video with my 5D mk iii. Great for photos and videos without using additional lights to capture the ambiance. Manual focus is also very easy compared to Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I've had this guy for about 7 months, and I've wrestled with it every step of the way. It's been calibrated, cleaned, every trick in the book, and yet the AF is a nightmare. It's comical how bad it is. When the photos are sharp, they're great, but I lose about 70% of my shots because of the AF. I also have a terrible time with the chromatic abiration. I would either save for the 1.2 or go with the Sigma, which I now own and love.

Very good

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

This lens has performed flawlessly for me. It has always been my most dependable lens in low light situations - especially those situations where flash photography is not appropriate.

This purchase is a replacement. The lens can be fragile and easier to damage than many lens. So, you need to be aware of this when storing the lens. Review articles about this problem.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I can be easily called "pixel peeper". Sharpens is one of the most important element of a lens for me. I can do the rest. I am so happy with this 50 mm lens, that each time I look see how sharp my images I find my self smiling.
