This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Excellent All Around Winner!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I picked up the 85mm f/1.8 for several reasons:
1. Quick focusing speed.
2. Light weight.
3. Overall, great image quality.

The 85mm 1.2L II is an excellent lens, but its focusing is slow and during certain portrait shoots (pet photography or other dynamic situations), I need a quicker focusing lens and the f/1.8 is that lens. The Sigma 85mm 1.4 is a great lens as well, but it's large and heavy so not suitable for long day events; it also has a large lens element so cost of filters was another consideration. I also looked into Tamron 85mm 1.8, but for the price, weight, sharpness, the Canon 85mm f/1.8 was the obvious choice.

I do enjoy the clarity of the 1.2L and the Sigma's 1.4, but my goto lens for portrait shoot is usually my EF 135mm f/2L. The EF 85mm f/1.8 is a great lens and unless you're pixel peeping or the bokeh is more important than the subject to you, this lens will do most of the work of the more expensive lens aforementioned. For less than $350, you'll not get a better lens that has stood the test of time for your money!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I bought this lens for use in indoor high school athletics.  The gyms are pretty dingy, so I needed the extra reach of the 1.8.  Although I haven't had the opportunity to use it for basketball or volleyball, I've found the lens to be quick and responsive in low-light situations indoors. All-in-all, I own 6 Canon L lenses.  I've had no quality or performance issues with this lens.  For the price, it's an outstanding value.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I did lots of research before opting for this product, and there very few videos in 2017 pertaining to this lens. One video I did find was a person in Germany shooting video. It was a great video. Took this lens out the past few days and nights and its sharp, fast and takes great images. Yes its old from 1992 but who cares, its a stellar lens better than almost all my non L glass lenses including my other primes. As good as my new 50mm just a bit more zoomed in focal length. I have an ASP_C cropped sensor camera; this lens has lots of uses for landscape, flowers, portraits, etc. So if you have a cropped sensor yes its still valuable and much needed. My only beef is the minimum range is like 3 feet away.

You will not regret getting this lens, the image quality is just superior and the bokeh is creamy! Another review on this site said: "Just buy this lens, you won't regret it". I couldn't agree more.

A great relatively inexpensive and fast portrait lens. The USM is a nice addition as well. Keep in mind that your depth of field is going to be extremely shallow at f/1.8.

Outstanding portrait lens

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This is an outstanding portrait lens, and one of the best values of any Canon lenses. There is a huge amount of glass in this lens - I generally use it wide open all the time for portraits. I really like to pose my subjects in front of foliage - the blurred effect is beautiful. I suppose the 85mm f1.2 lens is even better, but its 5x the price of this one.

I really like the Canon 85 1.8. It's the fastest lens I own. It's great for indoor sports, particularly for basketball. It is an outstanding portrait lens. The build quality is outstanding. It's very sharp and easy to use.

Great, sharp prime lens for portrait and other work

By Jason

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I was not sure about utility when I purchased this lens as the portrait work I do is normally in the 150mm+ range. But this lens is awesome. I've tested it for single and multi-subject portraits as well as in nature and street photography where you need just a little more zoom but also need to shoot wide-open at f/1.8 (note on an crop sensor this lens ends up being like a 135mm). I cannot say enough about this lens except "I am sold". The quality is awesome, the usage scenarios are plentiful, and the sharpness is exceptional. Overall a very happy customer!
