This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This is such a hardworking lens - wonderful for portraits and gives the creamiest bokeh. Would definitely recommend, plus it's at a great price point. Won't do another portrait session without it.

Such a great lens

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This is THE lens to have for any portrait photographer looking to improve the quality of their photos. The bokeh is SUPER smooth wide open at f/1.8 and f/2.8. It is also the sharpest lens I've ever used. End of story. With my crop sensor body, the only annoyance with this lens is that it is really a 137mm, and taking into account the lack of image stabilization, the slowest shutter speed I can get away with is about 1/250. Now, since it opens up to 1.8, that usually isn't a problem unless it is a super cloudy day and I'm shooting in the shade. My ISO capabilities on my camera body are less than favorable, so I never go past 200 for portraits. For me, I was looking to upgrade my glass before I upgrade my body because glass will always outlive your bodies. If you are looking at another prime lens for shooting portraits, stop. This is the lens you want. I was hesitant at first, but I am so glad that I bit the bullet and bought this fine piece of glass. I was able to pay for it entirely by doing senior portraits for my classmates in about two weeks so that is another plus. Such a great lens for the price, and the focus speed is about twice as fast as the 85mm L lens, which is WAY more expensive and not as sharp either.

Incredible Value! Strong Performance!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I purchased this lens for general people photography and use it as one of my two "go to" lenses, alongside the 50mm f/1.8 STM. While I could afford to spend significantly more on lenses, I currently elect to work with these wonderful little gems. Surely the Canon 85mm f/1.8 features one of the industry's highest value-to-price ratios! I typically use this lens at not less than f/2.8, since there is adequate bokeh at that setting and the sharpness and contrast also meet expectations at that aperture. Notably, the sharpest aperture for this lens is f/5.6, and this aperture is also highly desirable, light sources permitting. The size of this lens is extremely manageable. While I currently use a 58mm B+W filter with this lens, this intervention is probably not necessary as I have never scratched a lens. Recently, I read about the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Lens for Canon EF, which is a product I would also consider seriously, albeit it a higher price. Bravo, Canon, another nice piece of equipment at a stunning value.

Aterrible lens if not mated directly to a Canon

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I used the Aputure DEC to fix this lens to the body of my GH4 and GX8. I was met with soft, inaccurate focus and focus hunting. For the life of me, I could not focus this lens with my setup....Manual or in AF mode. I would not recommend my setup to my worst enemy. Canon to Cannon, Pano to Pano.....or weep!

A must have

By Dave

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

One of the big reasons to use full frame over crop frame is the bokeh. This is the answer. I purchased this for my 7D (and now my 7DMkII), and immediately considered it my favorite lens for portrait and medium telephoto shooting. At the wider settings the bokeh is truly beautiful, and images are beyond sharp. It's usually a bit too long for indoors; however, in larger venues its a fantastic candid lens for event photography being capable of a fast 1.8 when you need it. This lens has no stabilization, but can't say I've ever really missed it.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I ordered this EF 85mm F/1.8 USM few days ago and had it sent to me 2nd day service. When I got it I installed the lens into my Mark II 5d. It is a great lens for portrait. This is one of the best lens. I like the sharpest and quality. It is light compare to my Canon lens 70-200mm. Just went around and testing this see how good is this lens. I went around taking pictures on landscaping type of pictures and see how good is this 85mm lens. You be the judge of it. I just love this lens and probably will be using it a lot.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I did my homework before buying this lens. I mostly shoot couples, maturity, and seniors. This lens was amazing from the moment I put it on my 6D. Fast at focusing, not to heavy, and is very sharp. Love shooting with this wide open as well! If having Quality images is something you take pride in... Buy this lovely lens!

Fastest Focus I've Had - would buy again in a heartbeat!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Not only a nice portrait lens, but great for sports - especially wrestling matches. It is quiet, fast, solid - and watch your depth of field when set to f1.8 - nose and ear are right on the edge of one being out of focus, so best to close that aperture down a bit and still decent shots at f2.8. Everything gets pretty sharp at around f4 & above.
