On a Canon T2i I had been using just the 50mm f/1.8 with reasonably good results, but was limited by the lack of a zoom. I am just the average dad taking pictures of my kids running around in daylight or at various activites in-doors at school events. They don't pose or stay still. I was looking for a light-weight all-purpose "inexpensive" lens useful both indoors and outdoors and for action.

As the pros will tell you such a lens does not exist or is unaffordable.

This Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens has many of the features on my list and works pretty well as a walk-around lens. While it is a hefty 500g lens, with the T2i body it does not feel heavy when carried around walking all day. Zoom creep did not occur if I left the lens at 28mm when walking.

The lens appears well-constructed with a smooth movement of the zoom and quiet auto-focus. I purchased the refurbished lens from B&H for a price lower than that on Canon's website. It arrived in a Canon box with a 90-day warranty from Canon.

I previously had a Canon 18-55 mm lens on an Xti and had not taken many pictures at angles less then 30mm. The range of this lens is ideal for my needs. The image stabilization-IS while probably of a previous generation is a new and welcome addition for me. More shots at slower shutter speeds are usable. I can get decent pictures in good light outdoors and indoors and by using a flash with low light indoors. At low light however, I still prefer the 50 mm f/1.8 as I am not fond of using the flash.

I would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a general purpose lens.

i use this as a general purpose lens
in fact i own 2 of these
the range for this lens as an everyday work horse is near perfect but there are some caveats
compared to some other lenses this doesn't seem as sharp, the lens creep becomes an issue after a few weeks esp if you carry the rig by a neck strap (lens down).
the autofocus seems very fast and accurate not to mention quiet
the IS performs without a flaw as near as i can tell
i haven't seen a chromatic issues either

1 last minor hiccup you will want a hood for this lens i have caught some nifty (nasty) flares

please canon do something about the lens wobble though i hate that i've sent it in twice for repairs.
the lens wobble is caused by the end element's internal seal wearing out, this may also introduce dust elements or other debris into the lens

Great everyday

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I use this as my everyday walk around lens and it's great for most all situations from kids sports to landscape photos. This is my second purchase of this lens; I gave the first one to a friend who was starting photography. I figured I wouldn't miss it, I was wrong! One con I have is the "lens creep" this will almost always happen while carrying the lens in any downward pointing way.

Pay a little more for the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

A better than the cheap kit lens that comes with the Rebel ...but like others mentioned ...a major annoyance that the zoom doesn't hold when tilting the camera downward. Bought it for taking photos with my Rebel SL1 ...take to the beach camera. Good enough for that purpose ...but not much else IMO. The Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is a far superior lens with an even better zoom range!

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This was my primary lens while I had my Rebel XTi. It has visited 12 countries and survived without any optical issues. The lens shoots good in daylight, but contrast can fall off when shooting in difficult conditions like twilight.

I have not run into any serious vignetting or chromatic aberration. Colors are true, but not as vivid as other lenses I have used. No serious distortion was present during normal use.

Image stabilization is very useful, and I would not get any new lens without it. Stabilization on this lens is good enough to shoot by hand during twilight. Focus is ok, getting it right about 90-95% of the time. When it is off, it can be really off.

Construction is.... unfortunate. I honestly believe the term zoom creep was invented because of this lens. It will extend fully, without and hesitation when the camera is upside-down when carried on my shoulder. This can actually result in an unsettling "thud" as the lens bottoms out. It does not seem to affect the internal mechanisms though. I have heard that one can reduce lens creep by adding some very flat hair elastics under the rubber zoom grip. I will have to try this at some point.

There is also a lot of play when the lens is fully extended. This can be apparent when auto focusing. Again, it doesn't seem to affect the photos at all, but I would have liked tighter tolerances.

Good value for money

Good value for money, I bought it because my excellent 28-70 mm Tamron was out of order (diaphragm) when I was visiting NYC, but it's a noisy lens, lower quality than the Tamron. But for the price it's doing the job.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

Lens works great. Very sharp. This is a replacement for one I dropped and damaged beyond repair. The only problem I have with the lens is that the barrel does not hold position when the camera is pointed down. It would be nice if the lens had a lock or a much tighter barrel fit so that the zoom will not creep.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I have been shooting with the 28-135 since 2003. Six days before Christmas the auto focus switch and image stabilizer on the side of the lens fell off. I looked up B&H found another one on Monday ordered it and received it on Saturday. Can't beat them on supplying product .

Excellent Lens For A Great Price!

By Bill

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

...I purchased this lens to be my main lens for my Canon 5D Mk II, as it is versatile and covers a range that encompasses the majority of my photos. I use my cameras primarily to do time-lapse sequences, and this lens is great for landscapes and night astrophotography. I realize that the maximum aperture of 3.5 is not the best for astrophotography, but the price makes up for having to leave the shutter open for another 3-5 seconds! Focusing is fast and almost silent, and the stabilization feature works very well. From all the online pricing, B&H is the lowest from a truly reputable supplier, and I would gladly recommend this lens to anyone!

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This is not your L series lens. But, it is a good every day carry for a full frame camera. Having recently upgraded from APS-C to Full Frame, I needed a basic lens. This works.

I might have given it 5 stars..but then where would I put the L series lenses.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This is the same lens that came with a Canon 10D I bought many moons ago. The USM on the one I had gotten with that package was finally acting up (I used the lens for smoke art photos which required the lens to focus quite regularly and hence screw up the USM motor is my guess) so bought a replacement. Got it at BandH for $30 cheaper than I could find on Amazon so good price. The lens is a great value, if you are looking for professional level this aint it but it does the job and gives you lots of flexibility with the wide focal range.

One downside is that you can' lock it down so the lens will tend to telescope out on you while walking around with it.
