On a Canon T2i I had been using just the 50mm f/1.8 with reasonably good results, but was limited by the lack of a zoom. I am just the average dad taking pictures of my kids running around in daylight or at various activites in-doors at school events. They don't pose or stay still. I was looking for a light-weight all-purpose "inexpensive" lens useful both indoors and outdoors and for action.

As the pros will tell you such a lens does not exist or is unaffordable.

This Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens has many of the features on my list and works pretty well as a walk-around lens. While it is a hefty 500g lens, with the T2i body it does not feel heavy when carried around walking all day. Zoom creep did not occur if I left the lens at 28mm when walking.

The lens appears well-constructed with a smooth movement of the zoom and quiet auto-focus. I purchased the refurbished lens from B&H for a price lower than that on Canon's website. It arrived in a Canon box with a 90-day warranty from Canon.

I previously had a Canon 18-55 mm lens on an Xti and had not taken many pictures at angles less then 30mm. The range of this lens is ideal for my needs. The image stabilization-IS while probably of a previous generation is a new and welcome addition for me. More shots at slower shutter speeds are usable. I can get decent pictures in good light outdoors and indoors and by using a flash with low light indoors. At low light however, I still prefer the 50 mm f/1.8 as I am not fond of using the flash.

I would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a general purpose lens.

I like this lens. I don't really really like it, or love it, or dislike it, or hate it. I just sort of like it. It's nice and sturdy feeling, and has a great zoom range on my crop sensor which serves as a sweet mid-range telephoto (with the 1.6 crop factor I get a nice 45-205mm range).

It doesn't do great in low light but hey, how many zooms in this price range actually do? If you buy a lens that specifies it can't open up past 5.6 on the long end then you are made fully aware that it won't shine when the sun sets. I knew this going in, but I accepted it for the combination of price, zoom range, and the fact that I can use it on a full frame if need be. Lens creep is terrible, but for less than two bucks I got a pack of latex elastic hair bands and I slip one in the barrel crack and that takes care of that.

The really bad thing on this lens is how much dirt and dust it lets into the deep internals; you can look through the front of the lens and see the sandbox sitting there under the glass that you cannot access to clean.

It does its job ok, and image quality is an upgrade from the kit lenses but not by a huge longshot. I don't regret buying it but in retrospect wish I'd saved up another couple of hundreds for something a little better.

Good general purpose lens

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This is the same lens that came with a Canon 10D I bought many moons ago. The USM on the one I had gotten with that package was finally acting up (I used the lens for smoke art photos which required the lens to focus quite regularly and hence screw up the USM motor is my guess) so bought a replacement. Got it at BandH for $30 cheaper than I could find on Amazon so good price. The lens is a great value, if you are looking for professional level this aint it but it does the job and gives you lots of flexibility with the wide focal range.

One downside is that you can' lock it down so the lens will tend to telescope out on you while walking around with it.

Replacement for my tired EF 28-135!

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This lens is a replacement for my 11-year old 28-135mm. It is my go-to lens for general photography, when my 100-400mm is too long to be practical. The first 28-135 had been used for well over 15,000 exposures and it was tired - the auto focus was sporadic and did not capture crisp images.

Perfect for what it does

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I have better lenses at all the focal lengths this one has, but continue to find this a great walk-around snapshooter and video lens with the added bonus of basic macro. The lens produces soft results; no question about it, but for non-critical photography where I'm not anticipating big crops or enlargements-or for video it's not a factor. I have used this on all of my crop sensor cameras from the 10D to the 7D Mark II and through all these years it still performs as on the day I bought it.

Good lens great value

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This lens is not perfect, but the image quality is excellent. There is some zoom barrel slippage due to gravity when pointing the lens up or down and the af is slow, but for someone not looking to spend $1000 on the L series counterpart it provides excellent results.

I bought my copy from B&H in 2003 when I got my EOS-3 film body. It has Never let me down, although it sometimes "hunts" at 28mm. And, it has Outlasted my 24-105L IS which has been back to Canon once for repair(cost me $302.00, which sucked) & now it's got focusing issues! So, once again, my 28-135 has save me when my 24-105 messed up the 2nd time!

I use this as an all-purpose lens for taking portraits of my newborn as well as nature photos. The glass is great quality and really brings a lot of light in. The image stabilizer is a life saver in low-light (I don't have a fancy flash or setup for portraits).

The focus is fast and quiet, great for capturing those quick moments like a smiling baby!

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

      The Good:
The "IS" feature works as promoted. Very handy for video work at the wider focal lengths that have the larger apertures. It is relatively light for a zoom range of such a large spread. Impressive. The switches to toggle AF/M and IS on/off are solid and snap into placement very firmly. No chance of accidental switching. Build quality has been great, been shooting with mine for 6 years and I bought it used (could be even older). Never had a problem and it's travelled with me across the country.

      The Bad:
Optics wise, the lens has a lot of distortion if you shoot it on full frame. Be sure to turn on in-camera lens correction if you body supports it. Distortion is not as bad on APS-C bodies. If you shoot RAW, then correction via Light Room presets for this lens and you'll be good. The lens is very soft if shot wide open outdoors.

The image stabilizer is useful when I shoot steadicam style with my tripod.
              I would recommend this lens.

One con if any would be it doesn't have a lens lock to prevent it from sliding down when carrying.

I purchased this lens for a friend as a gift for his wife. She had seen mine and mentioned that she wanted the same lens. I've had mine for so long, I'm not sure when I bought it, but it is a great all around lens. It gives you a good wide angle, but also a perfect focal length for taking people pictures. A great lens when you just want to keep it simple for the day. I help teach a photography class and almost everyone who has ever taken the class has this lens. We consistently recommend it as a core piece of equipment. In almost 20 years, it is one of the lenses I would never give up; great pictures, great quality equipment.

This lens was a great buy for the price! I took it out into a snow blizzard with a Canon 7D and the photos are almost magical. Definitely worth a buy for a beginning photographer or a student building their portfolio. Only downside is the lens expands on its open when the camera is hanging around your neck or tilted down. But I am still thankful for the buy.
