The only lens that I use on my 5DII. Beautiful contrast and colour rendering. Snappy focus. Well balanced when attached to the camera body. In my opinion it renders better that my 35mm Summilux, however that may be due to the M9 sensor limitations. The 35L saves me a lot of time when post-processing. It needed minor in camera adjustments in order to focus accurately. I've uploaded some sample photos for the curious amongst the community.

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

My favorite storyteller

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I've had my 50mm 1.4 for almost seven years, it's a great lens but the framing was always a little tight for me. I had always wanted the 35mm but money was tight and I opted for the 50 instead. Seven years later I finally bought the 35mm and it's one of the best purchases I've made. This is the lens I've been looking for. I get everything I want in my shot at the right distance. Hope this buddy will stay with me for a lifetime.

Great results!

By Maddy

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

Fairly new to the DSLR world so I can't account for a review too in-depth for those professional photographers. However, it has treated me well so far! It's a perfect lens for all day use, and doubles as a portrait lens as well. I've already used it on multiple portrait shoots and ithe results are something else. I debated this longer than I should have and am now so glad to have it in my arsenal. Can't go wrong with Canon lenses, good buy!

Excellent lens - buy it while it lasts

By Thorsten

from San Jose, CA

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

Over time I've used most of the 35mm lenses out there and like this one best. It is sharp (don't let anybody convince you otherwise), has wonderful colors, nice bokeh and renders the images in a special way. And the AF is always spot on.

Among the other 35mm lenses I used, the Zeiss lenses are also excellent (I used both the ZE 35/1.4 and 35/2), but they are manual focus. I also had the Sigma 35/1.4 Art at some point. This is also a sharp lens. At f/1.4, the corners are perhaps even sharper than the 35L (who needs sharp corners at f/1.4), but the colors are not remotely as rich as the Canon, the bokeh not as good, and it also missed focus sometimes. Then I had the Sony 35mm f/1.4: A beautiful lens, but the onion bokeh pretty much killed it for me, not to mention that I don't much care for the colors from Sony's cameras, especially for skin tones. Lastly I tried the Canon 35mm f/2 IS. Also a sharp lens, and unlike the other 35mm lenses has the advantage of being small and having IS. It looked good with test shots, but in real life the rendering and bokeh were what I might call flat and harsh. So in the end there is nothing that compares to the Canon 35L. Practically any shots I've taken with it come out beautiful. This is the 2nd time I got this lens - I had sold my first copy when I foolishly tried to switch to Sony. The 2nd time around I considered the Canon 35mm f/1.4L II as well, but the sample images did not convince me. Yes it is sharp in the corners at f/1.4 (like the Sigma Art) but the bokeh is not comparable to the original 35L, not to mention it is much larger, heavier and more expensive than the original L. I'm so glad the 35L was still available. The close-out prices make it an even better deal than it was. Don't wait until it is gone.

New to L series

By CGetman

from Connecticut

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I'm new to the L series lenses and was surprised at the weight. Very heavy! Clarity & quality of images is great. Glad I purchased but not sure if the f/2 would've worked just as well for my mostly studio portraiture. Would've given 5 stars if it was a smidge less $.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

This is a great L series lens at an incredible price point. If you're shooting hand held in low light, this lens buys you two stops compared to an f/2.8. That means that instead of shooting wide open at 1/30th, you might be able to shoot wide open at 1/125th. There's a huge difference in camera shake issues.

This lens is not terribly heavy. It is sharp. It's a great lens to take in a low light kit in combination with that other Canon Gem, the 135 f/2L.
