First of all, please disregard the negative reviews of this lens due to it not having any sort of image stabilizing feature, thus producing "blurry" photos. This is very apparent considering the price, and folks who buy this thinking they're going to shoot great handheld photos at their kid's dimly lit indoor soccer match shouldn't be reviewing the lens in the first place. Know your needs before buying a lens guys!

If you're going to use this to shoot handheld anywhere besides outside in bright daylight, you need the posture of a statue you should be looking at an IS lens. If you aren't quite a zen master, do yourself a favor and lookup the "Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 VC" for the best low-cost stabilizing tele-zoom in my opinion.

I actually bought this canon lens for studio macro photography on the cheap - to use with a simple extension tube. That of course means this lens spends most of its hours in use pleasantly perched atop a tripod where it really shines. Shooting handheld at 1/320 is probably the slowest shutter speed you want to set for crisp images. When not in the studio, hazy daylight is your best friend for this lens. (attached photos from a recent trip to the local zoo.)

This lens really is capable of producing top notch images, but lacks the versatility of lenses with more robust features.

I got this lens for Christmas to mount to my T2i. This is my first telephoto lens. While it isn't bad for a start, once you get over the "WOW" of being able to zoom in on your subject this lens leaves a lot to be desired.

The main issue is it is SOFT, especially at 300mm. Compare this to a 50mm F1.8 stopped down to 2.5 or so and you'll see what I mean. A GOOD telephoto should be nearly as sharp. This lens doesn't even come close.

Combine this with the strong chromic aberration (purple hazing) with sharp highlights. While you can correct for some of it, don't expect to get great shots with strong direct lighting and/or highly reflective subjects.

All that being said you CAN get good shots out of this lens under the right conditions. With flat lighting the CA fails to rear it's ugly head, and with close subjects at 300mm, the bokeh quality is good. However, if the conditions aren't perfect you will end up with soft, purple-tinted photos.

For those with a less decerning eye this lens will do a decent job. But, if you are a bit picky with your photos, even if you're an amateur (like me) you'll probably want to pass on this one.

You get what you pay for. This is a kit lens that came as a bundle. For students learning about photography, this lens is acceptable. I have three of these lenses. The low quality materials and construction is evident by slack in the focus ring when using manual focusing.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

The lens works fine for walking around and shooting objects, but if you want to shoot anything that moves, get the 70-200 2.8. The 75-300 performs terribly in low light, even with lights for a football turf. It doesnt have is, which is a major turnoff. The USM motor is very delicate and will break if I try to screw on a filter or a hood while in af. Don't buy if you can afford the 70-200.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

An award-winning print journalist, allegedly "retired" after a career spanning almost 60 years, I am the editor, writer, photographer and producer of a local newsletter for seniors. Buying this lens from B&H completed my conversion to digital photography, giving me -- with the Canon 18mm-55mm f/3.5-f/5.6 lens that came with my T5 1200D -- a basic system equivalent to the old United Press International issue of 28mm, 50mm, 105mm and 200mm lenses plus, as a bonus, every focal length in between up to the 35mm equivalent of 400mm. Though both lenses are a bit slower than the f/2-f/4 range of the film-camera lenses with which I worked for so many years, I no longer photograph riots or sporting events, hence -- especially given the camera's built-in flash -- have no need for faster glass. And the 75mm-300mm lens is astonishingly light -- so much so my complete system weighs less than 25 percent of what a 35mm film-camera system weighed -- a great benefit for carrying on assignment. My only negative comment has to do with Canon lenscaps, which must be replaced (see below) if one is to use aftermarket lens hoods.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

This is a good lens for the money but there a couple things to improve. The aperture is nice as is the focal length. The focusing is noisy but accurate and fast. However, the minimum focusing distance is about 5ft, which isn't too nice if you want to take a close-up. I wouldn't recommend it for video because of the noisy focusing. Still, the weight isn't bad and the manual focus ring and the zoom ring are easy to use. I would recommend this to someone who wants a cheap but reliable lens.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

Although I have only used this lens on APSC, I imagine the results would be similar on full frame.
Once you start to appreciate bokeh, this lens has pretty bad bokeh. Plants looks especially bad. My other complaint is the insane amount of chromatic aberration this lens produces. I went to an airshow and all of the planes in my shots were outlined in purple. The chromatic aberration in this lens is very strong and noticeable. I would expect it to be slightly less on full frame. For APSC, I would recommend the 50-250 IS STM.

We've been badly in need of a good telephoto lens for the school sporting events my yearbook staff covers throughout the year, and we hit the jackpot with this baby. First time we used it was at a water polo game, and we got some great shots that make it look like the photographer was right there by the side of the pool instead of standing way in the back, out of the referees' way. We're very happy with it.
