I have used this lens for about 6 months and have loved everything about it. Its well built and THE most important thing about this very wide angle lens. Like I said before Its Recteliniar. Which means it keeps straight lines straight and curved line curved. its the perfect lens for archectural photography and close quarters automotive photography(my forte). There have been several jobs that I could not have done if I didnt have this lens.

I bought this lens because it claimed to be rectilinear. Well, sort of. But in fact, the distortion is so complex that I can come up with no way to correct it. I have found no profiles available for Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom. Notice in the image that I'm uploading, how the horizon is nowhere near flat. It bulges up in the middle, then down towards the sides, and then up again at the very edges. I consider this lens to be completely unusable on a full frame camera for anything containing straight lines. Architecture? Forget it. When I first purchased it, I was using a DX format camera. Had I been using a full frame camera, I would've seen the full complexity of the distortion, and would certainly have returned it right away. The Canon 14 mm lens is completely without distortion. Why can't Nikon do this?

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED Lens:

This is truly awesome lens that may be used on both FX and DX format cameras. The field of view is fantastically wide without being really distorted like a fisheye lens. The build quality is very, very good, what you would expect from a Nikon lens. It is not to big and not too heavy; it is very manageable and is an absolute pleasure to use. The autofocus is quick and accurate.

I use this lens for landscape and indoor photography and find the wide field of view to be very useful without being too wide. I chose this lens over the 14-24mm zoom as I already have a 16-35mm zoom, so I had that range covered; I needed something to cover the super wide focal length and this lens covered the gap very nicely. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a solid, super-wide lens, without getting into a super-wide zoom.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED Lens:

I bought this lens for indoor work, hotel rooms and lobbies, etc. After shooting with it one morning I almost sent it back - even got an RMA from B&H, mainly because I use polarizers quite a bit (even indoors for reflections)and you can't use any filters with this lens, but also because it flares badly which surprised me, also because I'm afraid of scratching the bulbous lens. However, I decided to keep it because sometimes you just need that width and it just might mean the difference between doing the job correctly and not being able to. Also used it for night photography (milky way) and I can see it being useful for big sky shots like lightning strikes. Makes nice stars out of lights.

    Bought mine in 1999[*]

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED Lens:

This is a lot of fun, trying to make distortions look normal, and man, do I need that. I use it on an N60 I bought in 1998, but will shift to the F100 when I am through with the roll. I do not like changing filters, as them screws are so small I am afraid of inhaling one? Be that as it may, if you get the filter changing kit from Nikon, which I obviously have, make sure you keep a magnet around to catch those little screws if they stray? I bought a bunch of different wratten (sic.) filters, but only use the green cause of those little screws and so on. Just don't get too close to your subject, or you will scratch the lens.(joke). As to the lens protector, mine works, and if Nikon could have offered something else, I wouldn't have minded, but that is what comes with and I haven't scratched the front or back of the lens in 14 years? I have broken Leicas more than once, but never a Nikon. When Leica still had the R series and also made this lens, the price for the Leica 14 mm was around [$] plus the cost of a camera body. Must have been a monster, the Leica.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED Lens:

I originally bought this for us on my D7000 shooting wedding films. Specifically to be my workhorse Steadicam lens. On the DX format D7000 the images were always soft and I could never seem to get it focused very sharp.

Enter the D800. Holy SMOKES! On an FX camera this lens is like a completely different monster. The images are AMAZING. Sharp, super wide, yummy goodness. And my Steadicam shots with this thing can come out looking astonishing.

It is a very specific lens to use and even though the lines stay straight, it does distort things when they get too close. If you know why you want to buy it, you should probably buy it... if you just want a wide angle lens, the 14mm-24mm or the 24mm prime might be a better bet.

    Really slow AF.

One note: You can't fit a lens filter on the front objective because it's too bulbous... so, be careful with this bad boy.

You can as close to something with the lens as possible and it will still focus to that close object. If you're on the fence about buy this lens just do it and you won't regret it.

Love this lens for city scapes and interiors of old buldings such as church interors at weddings. So sharp at every focal length and so little distortion for a lens of this focal length. I do dislike the silly soft lens cap which IMHO cost it a star, because you have to be so carefull putting it back on.

The lens is fast, quiet and worth every penny. It's among my heavier lenses for sure, but worth carrying around.

Great glass and it is a nice size and weight. So far.... wonderful

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED Lens:

This lens is overall a very well constructed piece of glass. The angle of vision is super wide with minimal distortion. I struggled for a long time trying to decide whether I should go with the zoom 14-24mm or the 14mm prime, and I am glad I decided to go with the latter. Being able to zoom is an awesome capability, but with the prime you can move forward or backwards to achieve a similar focal length and save a few extra hundred dollars. My biggest beef with this lens is the lens cap. Being a soft lens cap makes it kind of tricky to put back on, especially at night. And because the lens protrudes fairly far out, the possibility for scratching it becomes an issue. In terms of photographing capabilities however, great product. I only rated it 4 stars because although it is an amazing piece of equipment, it didn't blow my socks off.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED Lens:

I just bought this lens two days ago and OMG. What a beauty. It really is a gem. I love it. I've been having so much fun with this lens. It simply brings your creativity out. You can do sooo much with this lens. I bought it initially to shoot Real Estate/Interior and Exterior, but I'm having so much excitement shooting the mother nature. I used it on my D700 and shot a few sceneries. You just want to jump and touch the clouds when you look at them through this lens. I was driving back from San Diego, put my camera on P and Live View and took a few pictures while going under the over passes. When I showed them to friends, they just went, wooow... what a shot!
Buy it , then you will know what I'm talking about.
