This lens might only be a f/4-5.6 but still produces great bokeh. I run a D610 so AF works for me and works really well. I have test shot things moving in the wind at 6fps and when it does make the shot its in focus. I am going to try to get up to the local high school to do some football shots with it.The only thing I have found to be the downside of this lens is it doesn't let a lot of light in. If you want a clean handheld shot at 300mm you are going to have to shoot least at least 100 shutter. So in order to get this, I have to shoot at high ISO unless its outside and sunny. Would highly recommend this lens for its price.

This is an excellent paperweight and I would definitely recommend it to my enemies...

Jokes aside, this is a good lens for the money. I have used mine for photographing wildlife, birds, including birds in flight, surfers in action, the moon, flowers, street life, and even portraits with quite acceptable, at times good, results. I just don't think many of the shots I have made with this lens are great, and the blame for that does not always lie with the photographer.
I have found both soft focus and chromatic aberration to be fairly constant problems with this lens. Shots just are not as sharp as I want them to be, and at times I can see the magenta/cyan edges of particularly backlit subjects without even enlarging the image.
It performs acceptably in bright light, but as light drops off, so does image quality and it can take it a very long time to focus.
Since sharpness is very important to me and I find I use the 300mm a lot, I will probably get a 300mm prime instead.
However, for those who do not require great sharpness, or are on a very tight budget this is an excellent lens for the money. It is relatively lightweight, the zoom range is convenient, and in bright light the image quality is most often quite good.
I might not recommend this lens to a friend without a warning about its limitations, but it is a good value for the money.

Very inexpensive. Fun. Major flaws. Pretty good value.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

This is a cheap lens with a variable max aperture, more or less a kit lens. The zoom puts many subjects in range and opens possibilities if you just want to try out a mid-range zoom. But your pictures will be pretty much for your own pleasure. Chromatic aberration is terrible. I'm not a geek on this, just a photographer working his way up, but even for me the color flares are intolerable. Unusable for selling to clients. Focus is soft as well. The focus I expected--the lens costs less than a tenth of the cost of a fixed aperture 300mm more in the pro range. I could work around that by avoiding crops. But the color aberration is a deal killer. Pictures are useless with any crop. Build isn't so good either. The zoom is very rough. I use it--used it--only at 300mm, so that wasn't a factor, but it may be for you because you'll jar the camera as you zoom. The focus is fairly fast, a little noisy. All that said, at the price (I paid less than $100 for an open box), it's really quite a deal. You get a lot of fun for very little money. Check the major lens reviewers to get the specs and the down and dirty.

Bottom line: if you want to have fun and see whether a 300mm is for you, this is a great lens. I actually recommend it highly. If you want to sell your pictures however, look up the line and open your wallet.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

I recently upgraded to digital after years of scoffing and using film. I switched from a Canon film camera, to a Nikon D750. I typically prefer to shoot in low-light situations, and meter best I can to get lots of vibrant color. I wasn't sure what to expect since my favorite lens is f/1.4 - but I really love this.

It's perfect for outdoor and indoor use, with or without flash. I've seen other comments on sharpness not as sharp at 300mm, but I honestly didn't find an issue with that. Captures clear, crisp pictures and detail, even at the larger focal length.

It was a whim purchase for the price, and perfect for my re-immersion into photography.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

I got this lens used from BH (highly recommend browsing the used section, has some gems in it). It is good for a beginner but I can see the shortcomings of the lens. I personally like that it doesn't have autofocus because I prefer to manual focus anyways (I use a d3300). When not doing a lot of zooming(on the picture) and cropping, its softness is not as noticeable but when you zoom in its soft. Stopping down does help for the most part and a little bit of post processing as well.
Overall, it is a good step towards learning enough to make an investment for a more expensive lens.
(p.s. the picture attached to this review is straight from the camera, no post processing, there is noticeable PF and CA if you zoom but it looks great not zoomed)

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

This is a good lens that provides a nice value for money. We've used it for landscape photography and as a zoom lens for interior photography as well. The photos are very nice, and the camera (D300) works well with it. I'd say watch your light levels a bit, and sometimes at extreme distance (shooting a distant headland on the beach, for example), it was difficult to focus. In that instance, a secure footing, such as a tripod or monopod helps a great deal.

I am so happy to get my AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm lens. We go to the NC mountains often and I plan to use it for great shots of waterfalls and other beautiful scenery. It was delivered as promised and I plan to purchase other cameras and equipment in the near future.

Great value, famous NIKKOR quality!

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

A bit of a preamble: with age, I've become less of a fan of heavy AND expensive glass, particularly at a time where cameras are mostly plastic. In the days of film, it was convenient to buy pro, constant aperture zooms for general use, I have a bunch of these which I shoot indoors in the studio. I am in favor of primes, like the fabulous 35/1.8 DX, and an old 50mm/1.8, which afford me nearly three times more light. A great companion to these is this 70-300/4-5.6! It affords you a 70, 100, 135, 200, and 300mm lens for about $35.00 each. Compared to a $1000 80-200/2.8 you loose about 1 stop to between 100-135mm 1,1/2 to 200mm and 2 stops to 300, but .... for outdoor work, and with a tripod, NOT TO MENTION VARIABLE ISO SETTING of most DSRLS is superb. The best feature is the size and weight, the modest cost, and the superb image it produces (as it is cropped to the sharpest lens section) with my DX N7001. This camera has a lens motor for focus, so it works well with this lens. I understand it may not work with other DX camera, check before you buy it. For a light set-up, the 35/1.8 and this zoom are enough for me.

What a superb lens, replaced a Sigma that I had for 6 years which I thought was excellent, well this Nikon exceeds my expectations completely. It works great with my D80 and 90 bodies, pulls in a good amount of light and provides more definition and detail than the Sigma. What a great product at a superb value.

I wanted an inexpensive zoom lense to learn how to use my new D750. I figured that I would not spend too much on the lense before I went all out on a high end lense. Well after using this lense for a while I may have purchased a lense that I will stick with. This is an awesome lense. Great product!!!

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

Four (4) stars for what the cost to purchase this lens gets you:
      1) Good range of focal lengths on one lens
      2) Not meant to provide super high-quality sharpness and detail but IQ is surprisingly good for such an inexpensive lens
      3) light weight! This and point #1 above are what interested me in this lens as one to take on trips.
      4) AF seems reliable, sharp under daylight conditions. Not meant to be a high achiever under low-light conditions.
I didn't have super high expectations from this lens, but I will say that it performs better than hoped/expected. Given this and the relatively small investment of cash, I would say BUY IT!

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

Very nice lens and affordable. Manual focus is fairly easy with this lens as compared to some of my others which seem to have endless turning to get inline. This is easy to fine tune with not much rotating to get shots in focus quickly. Images are as sharp at 70 as they are at 300, within good range of your subject, but as with any zoom, there are limits on focal distance.
