No matter what type of photography you shoot, every one should own this lens.

-This lens is SHARP!! at f/4 its as sharp as lenses that cost 15 times as much. 1.8 is a little soft, but it's great to have for novel shallow DOF/ night/ special effects.

-the AF is faster then most of my AF-s lenses and just as accurate. It might search a little in really hard situations, but no more than much more expensive lenses.

-This lens is so light! It is always in my pocket, Always! no matter what I'm doing having a sharp, fast, non-intrusive (it's so small it doesn't scare people, so in most situations I get better images than with the amazing 70-200 because it's HUGE and intimidating)--A lens is only useful if you use it.

-on a DX (cropped sensor) camera this lens is even more amazing! It is 75mm equivalent; perfect for part body portraits/ street photography. Because DX only uses the center of the frame it's even sharper!

-there is *no* distortion (perfect for architecture)
Some coma in the corners and some light falloff at 1.8 on full frame/ 35mm, no biggie. A perfect complement to a distorted, slow walk-around zoom.

-bokeh(smooth out of focus areas) is good but not amazing
way better then any cheep zoom though.

If you're thinking about getting the 1.4: the only reason to spend three or four times as much is that it's sharper at f/1.8. BUT it has more distortion at f/4 than it's cheaper sibling. If you're a pro and need build quality, don't let me stop you, I have one. For every one else, If you have four hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket get a 85 1.8 or the new 60 2.8 AF-s

-this is still up in the air but the 50mm 1.4 AF-s I tried was no faster then the 1.8. (whoops)

If you're really hard on your gear I'd say, buy a 52mm Nikon NC filter and Nikon HR-2 rubber hood (or another 50 1.8 for almost the same price)

bottom line:
its one of the SHARPEST, FASTEST, LIGHTEST, MOST USEFUL lens money can buy, AND IT'S THE CHEAPEST!!!

It makes every camera, from a D3x or a F6 to a D50, shine!

I bought this lens when I bought my D600. The kit lens that came with my D600 is sharper than this lens is. I shoot fashion, beauty and portraits and when I use this lens I usually shoot at 1.8-2.8. Unfortunately, it's not sharp when opened up that wide. I'll be getting the 1.8G to replace this "thrifty fifty". Although this lens is inexpensive, my advice would be to use the $[$] that you'd spend on this lens and put it towards buying the 1.8G version instead.

I had gotten this lens while I was taking AP Photography in High School, and I absolutely love it. Although this is an FX format, I use it on my D7100 for close-ups and portraits. The detail is stunning. The only downside is that I have to stand further away, but that is what you will get with an FX lens on an APS-C camera.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

After reading reviews and finally deciding on this lens I ordered it.  I tried it out several times in various settings and maybe I just got a bad copy, it happens.  But I was not at all happy with the photos it produced.  They weren't as crisp as I am used to in a 50mm, the focus is a bit slower than I would have liked.  So just IMHO if  you are going to get one, I would go with the G version.

Nikon 50mm f1.8

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

So I am newer to the camera game but I have a Nikon D5200 body that came with the kit 18-55mm lens. This lens is ok but I knew I needed something a little better, so I went ahead and purchased this 50mm f1.8 Nikon lens. It has been working great for me. I love the blown out background I can get with this lens. This model is the manual focus one but that is ok for me. I wanted to get better at manual focus anyway and this kinda forces me to. Great little lens and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is looking foe a prime lens and seemed to me to be pretty budget friendly.

Guidance regarding use of minimum aperture lock lever would be helpful.

So far i really like this lens. I havent used it a whole lot but when i have its been great. Getting used to the manual focus has taken some getting used to but i need the practice anyway. And ordering it from B&H was great. They had really quick delivery of my lens which was great. I will definitely be buying from these guys more in the future.

Replacing an old 50mm

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

This is a standard lens for our newspaper reporters. After many years of use, our Sports Editor's gave it up. So I went right on B&H website and found a replacement. Can't go wrong with the lens or the company.

This lens has rekindled my interest in photography.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

I am a novice when it comes to photography but I have some understanding of the basics. I own an old Nikon D80 with the standard 18-135mm AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens. I find that the D80 still delivers what is needed for someone like me.
So I bought the 50mm f/1.8D lens with the intention of shooting portraits of my family and to do some 'artistic' photography. I must say it delivers! And quite a bargain. The lens is really crisp and the focus and control over the depth of field as well as performance indoor (December, Scandinavia = dark) is great! I look forward to the spring, this simple thing has rekindled my interest in photography.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

Although not a modern lens like the current ones, it is a lens that does not envy anything to the most expensive, allows to take very clear and brilliant photographs with a great blur. It is an essential lens for photographers.

Crisp, sharp, works like a champ on Nikon cameras above the 3xxx and 5xxx series (which do not have the motor drive for the D-series lenses).

Excellent product for the price.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

I am using this lens on a fully manual SLR. It has excellent sharpness throughout the exposure range. The lens produces wonderful shallow depth of field allowing for excellent effects in portraiture and "macro" photos. It has become my "go to" lens for general everyday photography and seldom leaves the camera.
