I use this lens with the canon 5D MK III. It replaces the 16-35mm f2.8L. I like the 17-40 because it's small, light, and less expensive compared to the 16-35. It uses a 77mm filter like my other Canon zooms. The f4 is relatively fast, and meets my needs for an ultra wide angle on a full frame sensor. There are compromises with the lens, compred to the 16-35, but I have not found any faults with it.

I've just gotten started with it, but I'm using this lens on a 5DmkII. It's easily my widest lens, and is quite wide on the 5D. I've never used the 16-35 or the 14mm. While it's not exactly what I would call a cheap lens, it is cheap for an L lens, and so I would expect some compromises to have been made. While I've not done any sort of side by side comparison, I would say it's not the sharpest lens, particularly at the edges, and it does have some vignetting. This seems to be the case even when stopped down and zoomed, although these issues are probably worst at 17mm at f4.On the upside, I do like the metal construction and weather sealing of an L lens. It opens up to f4 regardless of focal length, which is fast enough to use the precision focusing screen on the 5DmkII (it's visibly darker than the normal screen, but usable). I'm not unhappy with the distortion it produces. Most importantly, it's a seriously wide, Canon L lens for only [$] The 16-35 and the 14 are both twice as expensive.

Best Lens Ever!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

As an independent filmmaker, my camera equipment is not only by baby and best friend, but my life support. Saving up for my Canon 7D and then purchasing lenses has been, by far, one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences of my life. Talking to the experts behind the desks and then talking to the pros behind the cameras, this experience was as thrilling as interviewing movie stars in an epic film or tour guides for a grand adventure I was about to embark on.

After buying multiple lenses, from primes to telephoto; the Canon EF 17-40 mm lens was the best purchase I’d ever made. Instead of needing a very large and safely padded camera bag for multiple prime lenses, the 17-40 mm is lighter and far more easily stored despite the gentle circumference difference from the base to the top in physical appearance. The lens is very clear and useful due to its wide range of focus, for photos and videos. I can just as easily shoot a close-up and a medium frame based on the feeling I am going for with a simple rack focus.

Good care of the lens is simple, too. With a wide face of glass, lens caps are to be kept on during storage and travel. The glass responds best to anti-static cloth, and each knob adds to the delicate but simple infrastructure of the lens. Not much can stain the body and anything on there can be easily removed by being picked off or rubbed off with a dry towel. Air cans are best for reach the nook and crannies, also to minimize the possibility of damage to the lens, itself. Like most lenses, liquids are best kept away from it, along with sand and other dusty material.

The last time I traveled to China, I contemplated bringing several lenses, but in the end, I packed my 17-40 mm and a telephoto lens. As it turned out, I used my 17-40 mm the most. From beautiful landscape to detailed ornaments, this lens kept my creative eye busy and captured every angle my heart desired. Perhaps it’s the confidence of the red band or knowing that Canon was in my hands, whatever the case, this lens renewed my love and need to shoot, as I hope it would change your life, too. If you don’t have this lens, you’re missing out. I know filmmakers often prefer prime lenses, but for travel, convenience, and quality, I highly recommend the Canon 17-40 mm lens.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

This lens is of great construction, just like all the Canon products. Good for general shooting but great for capturing large expansive views, such as landscapes and the architecture of buildings. Heavy on the price but hey, you can't beat quality glass.

Great lens for landscape and architectural photography. A little soft at edges if you are a pixel peeper.
Has a nice internal focus mechanism, appears weather resistant (I have not taken mine out in the rain)
I did not notice any barrel distortion, I had rented a 16-35 f2.8 and it had noticeable distortion at 16 mm.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Having shoot with EF 17-40mm f/4L for several months, I can say that this zoom works well as a walkabout landscape lens on a 6D, if I am not planning on swapping lenses. On this body, it can see really wide, although I rarely keep anything taken beyond 24mm, because of the optical distortions. At the 40mm end, this lens take great group portraits. The IQ is excellent. A range provided by zoom is perfect for an APS-C body, which was a decisive factor for me.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Purchased this lens to use with my Canon 6D and while it may not have that last 1mm of focal width or the step up quality of the f/2.8, for the relative price, it's pretty spectacular.

I mostly shoot still landscape for fun and my shots with this lens have been some of my best ever especially around low light / night and long exposures.

The range is notably wider than your typical kit lens, stabilization works well, the detail solid though a little soft outside (or maybe it's just my shooting), and it's easy to adjust. Much of my use is on long hikes and in very cold places and everything has held up beautifully for that though there is enough of a lip on the front of the lens for small particles to catch under and it does fog up quickly.

Those images (see attached) I took with the camera braced were very nice. It's a winner for the not so shaky or tripod crowd!!!!

This lens performs very well for large view sweeping landscape work and also very well for close-up imaging in rather confined spaces such as in a cavern. The f/4 aperture and L series quality glass and optics make this one of my best lenses. There is nothing that I don't like about it! It is not f/2.8 nor does it have IS; but, since I shoot with it almost always on a tripod, those are features I don't really need and am glad I didn't pay for. For me, this is a great lens and I am really pleased with it.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Canon tries to give the consumer a chance to own a relatively inexpensive "L" lens with this one but they also take away some important features in order to make the lens more affordable...

There is no IS (image stabilization)
There is a 4.0 fixed aperture opening where it should have been a 2.8 fixed.

Its basically a consumer lens with a red stripe and an "L"printed on it.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

My wife and I have shared one of these for a few years. When it came time to buy a second wide angle we looked at other options but finally opted for a second of the 17-40.
This lens covers a nice range of angle of view and does it at a reasonable price.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I have used a friend of mine s lens a few times before I buy one. I buy mine to shoot an interior of a new house. My 24-105 was not quite wide enough to get the shots I wanted. I was using it on a tripod with just the ambient light with my 5D and got some great shot. My other use has been landscape. It allowed me to take picture of the huge live oaks in Florida without cutting off the limbs. I would recommend it to a friend.
