I use this lens with the canon 5D MK III. It replaces the 16-35mm f2.8L. I like the 17-40 because it's small, light, and less expensive compared to the 16-35. It uses a 77mm filter like my other Canon zooms. The f4 is relatively fast, and meets my needs for an ultra wide angle on a full frame sensor. There are compromises with the lens, compred to the 16-35, but I have not found any faults with it.

I've just gotten started with it, but I'm using this lens on a 5DmkII. It's easily my widest lens, and is quite wide on the 5D. I've never used the 16-35 or the 14mm. While it's not exactly what I would call a cheap lens, it is cheap for an L lens, and so I would expect some compromises to have been made. While I've not done any sort of side by side comparison, I would say it's not the sharpest lens, particularly at the edges, and it does have some vignetting. This seems to be the case even when stopped down and zoomed, although these issues are probably worst at 17mm at f4.On the upside, I do like the metal construction and weather sealing of an L lens. It opens up to f4 regardless of focal length, which is fast enough to use the precision focusing screen on the 5DmkII (it's visibly darker than the normal screen, but usable). I'm not unhappy with the distortion it produces. Most importantly, it's a seriously wide, Canon L lens for only [$] The 16-35 and the 14 are both twice as expensive.

I use this lens on a Canon 5DIII for forensic photography and the results were nothing short of fantastic. Absolutely tack sharp and well worth the expenditure. Only regret was I did make this purchase earlier.

Great Lens!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Excellent lens for my purpose (interior architectural photography). Excellent sharpness. Maybe the extreme edges would be sharper on the 16-35mm L (maybe not) but for the price difference I'm totally pleased with the IQ from this. I also LOVE to focal range it covers - ultra-wide to nearly normal. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat.

Fun for candid portraits and groups

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

While most photographers use a lens like this for landscapes and architecture, I've fallen in love with the people photos it takes on my 5d Mk1 full frame. The sharpness of the edges matters not when your subjects are somewhere in the middle 85% of the frame, as is always the case with people, and the sharpness where it does matter is always excellent.

At fairly wide angles the perspective it gives is quite pleasing to my eyes. I prefer it's slightly barrel like distortion, and whenever I've tried correcting it in lightroom, I've always un-corrected it again. The photos just have that little bit more character which to me seems more real and lifelike.

Being able to cover the 35mm focal length with the same lens is also a bonus and makes the lens quite versatile overall. The colour and contrast is fabulous, and the skin tones come out great.

I highly recommend this lens for people photos, especially candids and groups - just avoid the very edges of the frame if you're in the extreme wide angles and your people photos will take on a life that you might not have seen before.

This is the second one I bought

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I used this lens on my 7D for about 5 years until my camera and lens were stolen. After a year of waiting and saving up, I finally made up my mind to buy this lens again. I've become very used to how the lens shoot over the years and that was the main reason that led me to purchase it again.

Pros:
• Great weather sealing quality. I've shoot this in drizzling rain and it is fine.
• Great image quality. L Lens have a great organic color production that is unmatched by third-party lenses.
• Super Fast Focus. This lens focuses fast, and also can focus in a relatively close distance. It is not enough to do macro with, but I can shoot closeups of flowers with great clarity and vibrance.
• Great value for the price. The value of this lens greatly outweighs the "low" price.
• Looks great on my 5D. I know this may seem trivial, but this lens looks very proportional on the 5D or 7D.

Cons:
• Aperture is locked at f/4. This limits handheld shooting to when the sun is out, or if you have great lighting. Indoor shots will be very dark. These can be fixed by using a tripod, or shooting raw and fixing it later in Photoshop.

Conclusion: This lens is great to have, and its value greatly outweighs the price. If you are looking for a first L Lens, this is a great one to start with. Every lens has limitations, and this one is the aperture (it is a pretty big limitation). Knowing how to use your equipment is how you learn to get over the limitations, not by having a "perfect" lens that can do everything.

Hope this helps.

I'm a fan of this lens!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Although not perfect, the Canon 17-40mm f4L is a great lens to pair with your full frame sensor if you're looking for that really wide angle shot. Build quality is second to one (a common theme among L lenses) and focus is quiet and smooth. The lens itself is also fairly light when compared to other L lenses which makes if backpack or camera bag friendly.

The only major issue with this lens is the distortion seen at the outer edges when shooting at 17mm. There is significant distortion and some vignetting, but fortunately it's nothing a little Lightroom can't solve. I now have two of these lenses in my household and we both love using them regularly.

Buying from B&H was nothing short of easy, fast and convenient. They were priced competitively and I had the lens in hand less than three business days after submitting my order. I'll definitely be a repeat customer at B&H!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I use this lens on a daily basis when I am out shooting photos of houses and commercial spaces for real estate agents. If I had to choose one single lens for my work, this would be the one. This is also my favorite lens for landscape shots.

At 17mm, this lens has very minor barrell distortion, which is completely expected for lenses of this width. The distortion can easily be corrected with the lens correction tools in programs like Photoshop and Lightroom.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I have been shooting homes for realtors for a few years now, and am kicking myself for not getting this lens a long time ago! I had been using my 24-105mm on my Canon 6D, and it has done a fantastic job for me, but nothing like the 17-40mm.

The lens is the perfect size, and not too heave. I really like how all the physical zomming is within the lens, so the actual outside of the lens doesn't move at all! Clarity is amazing. So far, my low-light high-ISO shots still look great, and the outdoor scenic wide shots I've tried look great too!

Price was right on this lens! A great buy!

Best Lens Ever!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

As an independent filmmaker, my camera equipment is not only by baby and best friend, but my life support. Saving up for my Canon 7D and then purchasing lenses has been, by far, one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences of my life. Talking to the experts behind the desks and then talking to the pros behind the cameras, this experience was as thrilling as interviewing movie stars in an epic film or tour guides for a grand adventure I was about to embark on.

After buying multiple lenses, from primes to telephoto; the Canon EF 17-40 mm lens was the best purchase I’d ever made. Instead of needing a very large and safely padded camera bag for multiple prime lenses, the 17-40 mm is lighter and far more easily stored despite the gentle circumference difference from the base to the top in physical appearance. The lens is very clear and useful due to its wide range of focus, for photos and videos. I can just as easily shoot a close-up and a medium frame based on the feeling I am going for with a simple rack focus.

Good care of the lens is simple, too. With a wide face of glass, lens caps are to be kept on during storage and travel. The glass responds best to anti-static cloth, and each knob adds to the delicate but simple infrastructure of the lens. Not much can stain the body and anything on there can be easily removed by being picked off or rubbed off with a dry towel. Air cans are best for reach the nook and crannies, also to minimize the possibility of damage to the lens, itself. Like most lenses, liquids are best kept away from it, along with sand and other dusty material.

The last time I traveled to China, I contemplated bringing several lenses, but in the end, I packed my 17-40 mm and a telephoto lens. As it turned out, I used my 17-40 mm the most. From beautiful landscape to detailed ornaments, this lens kept my creative eye busy and captured every angle my heart desired. Perhaps it’s the confidence of the red band or knowing that Canon was in my hands, whatever the case, this lens renewed my love and need to shoot, as I hope it would change your life, too. If you don’t have this lens, you’re missing out. I know filmmakers often prefer prime lenses, but for travel, convenience, and quality, I highly recommend the Canon 17-40 mm lens.

Having shoot with EF 17-40mm f/4L for several months, I can say that this zoom works well as a walkabout landscape lens on a 6D, if I am not planning on swapping lenses. On this body, it can see really wide, although I rarely keep anything taken beyond 24mm, because of the optical distortions. At the 40mm end, this lens take great group portraits. The IQ is excellent. A range provided by zoom is perfect for an APS-C body, which was a decisive factor for me.
