The first thing I noticed about this tripod is how solid it is. It is made out of metal, and is rock solid. It is a little bit longer than a pencil, and probably as thick as three fingers together when folded, so it fits easily into a camera case. The ball head is the first that I have ever used, and it holds up very well. I have other large Bogen tripods with large format heads, and this mini ball head is impressive in comparison. I have no doubt that it will hold medium format gear. I was using it with my Canon 5D.

It's application (at least, the one for which I bought it) would be for a lightweight mini travel tripod where you are looking for something to hold the camera so that you can be in the shot along with your family. As long as you have a solid and relatively flat surface (floor, garbage can top, tabletop, etc.) you can use this. If you are in an area where you lack these types of surfaces, for instance, if you are hiking in heavy brush, you may want to consider the gorillapod which can clamp onto objects such as branches, etc.

I would not try a gorilapod instead of this for my camera. This tripod is realy strong and I know I can trust my camera being suported by it. The only problem is that "with great power there must also come - great weight." At least for my casual usage, I know I will plan before bring it with me anywhere. Overall, it delivers what you expect if you need your camera steady and take good pictures.

These mini tabletop tripods from Manfrotto are perfect with lighter weight cameras. These 709 Digi tripods are also great for external recorders like the PIX, Odyssey, Atomos when using them on a table.

Comments about Manfrotto 709 Digi Tabletop Tripod with Ballhead (Black) - Supports 4.5 lb (2kg):

I bought this tabletop tripod for use with my micro 4/3 mirrorless camera as an alternative to carrying a full size tripod when I don't want to carry a lot of weight. For that purpose, it has been very useful. Due to it's light weight and small size, I can carry it at all times with little effort in a jacket pocket or in the bottom of my camera bag. It has it's limitations; however, and I would not recommend it as a replacement for a full size tripod for DSLR use, but for micro 4/3 and/or for any compact camera, it is extremely handy and convenient to take along. It is very well made and the small ballhead is robust and stable enough to hold my camera steady on a tabletop, the hood of a car, a rock in the woods, or even on the ground. The biggest plus is that I always have it with me because it's so easy to carry. It also allows me to take extremely low angle shots that would be difficult to take with most other tripods. I have tried other tabletop tripods, but this one suits my needs the best.

Wonderful tripod, didn't skip a beat loaded with my D800 and Zeiss 135/2.0 lens for exposures over 5 seconds. But the little cork feet fall off before your first use, so get over it and don't use it on furniture that it might scratch, because those metal legs WILL scratch wood and the like. Also, vertical shots are nearly impossible, but I managed a few. Just makes it very side heavy. But other than those few nits, it's very light and sturdy, and holds more than I could possibly imagine.

Comments about Manfrotto 709 Digi Tabletop Tripod with Ballhead (Black) - Supports 4.5 lb (2kg):

It's not the cheapest mini tripod out there but being a Manfrotto, the quality is very good. I use this tripod ALL of the time with everything from my Sony Action Cam, my GoPro to my Canon 60D with 18-200mm lens. The little rubber feet fell off one by one over time but it doesn't affect the performance at all unless I wanted to prevent scratches when I placed it on delicate surfaces like my car. I suppose I could glue on some cork replacements but for now I just place it on a towel for those times. I use mine primarily for time lapse and long exposures when I don't want to bother with my heavy, full sized tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 709 Digi Tabletop Tripod with Ballhead (Black) - Supports 4.5 lb (2kg):

I've had this for only a short time but it's been pretty handy. It's so small that it fits in my bag and I hardly know it's there. When I need a quick way to stabilize my M43, Canon S95, or iPhone using a Glif this little tripod is right there. Because it's lightweight, easy to use, and surprisingly stable, I carry it in my bag everywhere. It's perfect for the "nimble" photographer who travels with minimal kit, and who among us want's to carry more than absolutely necessary? There are lots of options for small tripods like this and if you're looking for a small, tabletop tripod check out the Manfroto 709. I'm very happy with mine and you might like it too.

This all metal desktop tripod is very stable.
For example, it supports a Sony A6000 with a 55-210 lens fully extended.
Once folded, it fits in any camera bag side pocket or, in a pinch, in my jean's back pocket.
While it can be used partially folded, there are not positive stops, so the weight of the camera will tend to push it open.

I bought one of these sometime in the 1990s. I loved it. I lost it. I bought this one. It's perfect for both point and shoot cameras and it also works great for my DSLR w/ a 17-55mm f2.8 (heavy) lens. It stands up to whatever you give it. Great for trips where a larger tripod would be inappropriate.

Comments about Manfrotto 709 Digi Tabletop Tripod with Ballhead (Black) - Supports 4.5 lb (2kg):

I bought this when it first came out years ago and I overpaid for it--some amount over a hundred bucks along with a little pouch and a short riser for optional use between the mini ballhead and the legs. I remember a seasoned photographer telling me never to skimp on lenses or tripods.I've been using this for years and I keep it in the bag and use it almost daily. I have a Canon 7D, a couple of Fuji cameras, a few Leica cameras, lots of use and lots of lenses, small and large. This thing is never going to be as good as a full-size mondo carbon fiber tripod but it will let me take excellent long-exposure shots (starscapes of 200 ISO 30-second f/2 type shots) or the bust-it-out-quick-let's-all-get-in-the-pic when I do the impromptu recording a happy birthday candle blow-out with whatever camera happens to be in my pocket at the time. The (not reviewed, but compared) plastic Manfrotto with plastic legs MTPIX-B) I bought recently because I hoped would be as good was disappointing garbage compared to this 709. The MTPIX-B is diluting their brand and I should return it on principle.I wasn't a pro when I started and this was one of the pieces of kit I thought I didn't really need when I purchased it and now I don't know how I would get by without it. Always in the bag and the one you use is always better than a better one that stays at home.

I bought this to use with my Nikon D5000 and either an 18-130mm or a 70-210mm lens. I wanted something small enough to fold up and fit into my camera bag (a small shoulder bag) but sturdy and stable as well.

The tripod is perfect, just fitting in the bag, but providing a stable and easy to adjust platform for my camera.

And all at an excellent price!
