There is no other lens in the wide to medium telephoto that is as light, compact and high performance and low-priced as this lens. Once you get into the 24-70, you're into bigger size and weight, much higher cost and bigger filters. I use this lens for portraits, events, weddings and travel. It is a great, all-around lens. It has enough macro capability for food photography which is great at events, weddings and travel. You'll be surprised how much detail you get on a full-body portrait that even the texture of the garment fabric shows. I compared it to my 50mm f2.8 Sigma Macro and you could hardly tell the difference. Of course, the macro lens has 1:1 magnification and flat-field focusing for my special uses, but I don't need that for travel. The constant f2.8 on this small zoom is great for low light, and the filter does not rotate while zooming, so it's great for polarizing filters as well. There is no lens extension with its internal focusing. The focusing motor, while fast, is not silent, so video audio might pick it up.

I bought this lens because of the price and focal range. I am shooting with a Canon EOS 5D. I only have experience with EF mount lenses so this review may not be helpful for nikon users.
I would have preferred to buy the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L lens, but the Tamron is less than half the cost.
Most reviews say this lens has good center sharpness but is a bit softer in the corners. I found this to be true. Other reviews called this lens soft on the wide end, and I have also found this to be true as well. The above problems are balanced out, however, by very good sharpness at 40mm and above. The lens handles colors very well, with little or no chromatic aberration and no there is no significant barrel distortion to speak of.
In short, this is a good general use lens. It is not as nice as the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, but it is good for the price. If you are looking for a good wide angle lens for shooting high quality landscapes, I would probably invest in the Canon 16-35mm L lens. However, for general all around use this is a good lens for the price.

For the price, this lens is well worth it. The constant 2.8 aperture is a game changer for under $500. I am very happy with this lens & plan on using it for a long time.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I love this lens, I bought it for my Canon 80D and use it for everything. I do a lot of concert photography and it works great for that. My only complaint is the zooming isn't a nice smooth feel, it's a little rough but you get what you pay for. The not smooth zooming doesn't effect my pictures at all so it isn't a serious issue for me. Would definitely recommend!

I had a similar lens that I used for years and took 1000s of pictures that were great. This lens seems much clearer and I have been thrilled with the results so far. Thanks for an improved lens that works great with my Canon T2i EOS camera.

More than I expected!

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I have found that this lens is very sharp through out it's range. Some of the reviews noted softness at the extreme focal ranges. I haven't found this to be true. I do wish that the lens had image stabilization. But, overall, this is a very excellent lens and the price makes it even better.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I did not have high expectations for this lens and it met them squarely. The lens was recommended by a colleague as an inexpensive alternative to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8. While it has some weight and feels durable, the focus ring is gritty and flimsy, and just feels cheap and awful to the touch. Color is meh, and sharpness is about what you would expect for the price - not great. What's good about this lens? The price. You get what you pay for. Are you pro? If yes then you're not reading this. Do you want to be pro? Save up and spring for the good glass.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I'm a high school Journalism teacher and I've always been unsatisfied with the stock lenses that come with SLR cameras. They work fine in daylight, but my photographers needed something to shoot sports in a gym or football field under sodium vapor lights. These lenses are great, especially for the price. 75mm is long enough to cover action in a gym, and 28mm is wide enough to turn around and shoot the whole crowd. f2.8 makes such a difference in image quality and faster shutter speeds for sports. It also makes great shallow depth of field shots for portraits. The only thing I had to adjust to is turning the barrel the opposite direction I'm used to for zooming. That's a small price to pay for a great quality lens at a low price. I'm so sold on it, I'm considering getting one for my own personal use. And that's saying something on a teacher's salary.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

The two stars rating is given with the belief I could have gotten a bad copy. However, my review is based on what I got, and what I saw. I tried the lens on 3 Canon bodies: T5i, 60D, and 6D. The lens performed, or failed to perform as expected on all three bodies. Images were soft at best, and mostly out-of-focus at worst. Changing modes of AF didn't change the outcome. Some distant (20-25') images appeared focused, but when zoomed on the camera to check detail were found to be blurred, and unusable.
I really wanted to like this lens, but couldn't, and returned it to B&H. The price point was right, and I was ready to try a non-Canon lens. Unfortunately, my experience was not good, and my stable of lens will remain 100% Canon.

I was excited to get this lens after reading all the great reviews. It's built well and does a great job in low light. I used it for a outdoor concert at night and was very pleased. I did have to boost the clearity in PP a little but it is pretty sharp. It's not quite on par with my L lenses but for the price its great. I would say it's an above average kit lens.

I use this Tamron mostly for macro with extension tubes. It is a replacement lens because my original one was damaged. I have been satisfied with the results except I wish that it came with Vibration compensation. Considering the price compared to equivalent or similar lenses from Canon or Nikon, it is a worthwhile purchase.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I have both this Tamron lens + my wife insisted on buying latest and greatest Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens.

I tested both lenses and my not very professional conclusion is:
              1) their sharpness is absolutely the same except 2.8 where Canon is a bit better
              2) Tamron is lighter and more compact
              3) Canon focuses a bit faster and without noise

So, probably it makes sense to buy Canon if you are pro and it makes sense to buy this Tamron lense if you are semi-pro or hobby photographer.

This Tamron is a vast improvement over Canon 18-55mm kit lens. The best Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L is a small improvement over Tamron 28-75mm.
