A few shoots for myself and others made me realize that I would really like to have a constant aperture standard zoom for my Nikon. Then I started shopping for lenses in this range... Eesh. Did I mention that I have kids and a mortgage? I noticed an anomaly. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. At a fraction of the others this must be a typo, made of styrofoam or something. After obsessively poring over the specs and comparing them to the others, and watching and reading countless reviews I came to the following conclusions:Cons (kinda)Point: It does not have IS like it's newer (and $ more expensive!) 24-70 sibling.Counterpoint 1: Neither does the (almost $ more expensive!) Nikon.Counterpoint 2: At a constant f2.8 up to 75mm this should not be a large concern.Point: It is not as sharp at the corners as the competition.Counterpoint: Tragic, but I shall wipe the tears from my eyes with the $ to $ bills still in my pocket and soldier on.Point: 3rd Party.Counterpoint: Non issue if it plays nice.Point: At 28mm not as wide as the others at 24mm.Counterpoint: Your results may vary, but this was not a significant issue at the wide end. See below.Point: It does not have IS like it's... Wait. I already said that.Pros- It costs $ to $ less than it's closest competition! Apologies for harping on that, but for a hobbyist with multiple college tuitions closing in and no spare buckets of cash laying around this is very important.-It is very sharp at the center.Minimum focus distance is surprisingly close even at 75mm. Would not have been as surprising had I noticed the all uppercase 'MACRO' emblazoned across the side of the lens before yesterday. Can't get anything past me.-It is quite compact (3.62" L as compared to 4.6" and 5.2" for the other Tamron and Nikon respectively) and light (508g as compared to 825g and 900g for the other Tamron and Nikon respectively). Better to fit in my bag and avoid fatigue.-Good build quality, with nicely sized zoom and focus rings.-Unlike my existing Nikon lenses it is a Nikon F mount. Great considering the inevitability of a DX to FX upgrade in my future.-75mm as opposed to 70mm is an agreeable trade off for the 28mm con listed above.-Teamed with the recently acquired Neewer TTL flash (at $55 a fraction of the factory option), I have been using mostly with the 18-55mm kit lens and very happy with, it should make for a very versatile indoor and outdoor combo.-More stuff, but I do not want to type any more bullets...Decision made for me.Enough rambling.I have not done any dedicated shooting with it yet, but I added some sample shots that have convinced me that this was a good decision.-ELW

When I first purchased this lens, I absolutely loved it, using it on my Fuji S2 and S3 Pro cameras. Focus was relatively fast and accurate and sharpness was acceptable. Then I purchased a full-frame camera (D700). Edge to Edge sharpness is absolutely TERRIBLE on this camera. Center charpness is excellent. On a full length portrait at F8 in the studio, the center of the portrait (mid waist height) is very sharp, eyes and face, blurred and unprintable for anything over 8x10.

Put the lens on my APS-C sensor cameras and it does fine again. Bokeh is nice, the price is right...just can't use it on my D700.

Can't swallow that $2k 2470?  This will do it.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:

5 star becuase i couldn't find a better lens (at this focal length & f2.8) by paying anything less.  You lose 24mm, and that's about it.  I don't see any sharpness issue here becuase it's extremely rare that a better picture would be taken by using a sharper lens than this. Now reality check, if a person thrown in $2k on a 2470 and do the 100% pixel comparison, differences you bet!  Buy this lens and spend another $50 on good photography reads -fastest way to burn your rich friends flashing $$$ gears at you lol.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:

I purchased this lens to go with a new Nikon 7100 because it is faster than the two kit lenses that came with the camera. The photos have been clean and sharp, and the wider aperture allows me to shoot action at faster shutter speeds. I would recommend this lens to a friend.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:

I am mainly a prime shooter but got this lens because a fast zoom can be useful in situations where you cannot switch lenses. Prior to buying this I rented both a Tamron 24-70 and Tamron 28-75. My plan was to buy the 24-70 but as the 28-75 was a cheap rental I decided to try it too. To my amazement the image quality matched the 24-70 in most circumstances. In fact I showed images of the same subject to other people without telling them which was from which lens or the price of the two lenses and they consistently preferred the 28-75! It is good from wide open and excellent from f4. I also like that it is light. I like light lenses and it isn't much heavier than the Nikon 24-85 which it outperforms. Overall it is a great lens for the price. It could focus faster and flare can be an issue but who can complain for the price.

Disappointed

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:

I hit this lens on the front and I discovered how cheap it is made.
The filter ring is plastic and it's holded with another this cheap plastic ring, it seems metal, I always used to think this parts were metal. Wrongggg it's all plastic. Well after I remove the front element I really wanted to open my window and trow it away. I still using it but desappointed to own this lens.

Not bad, not amazing. Don't expect that just because it's a 2.8 lens, it's going to be amazing. Image quality on par with kit lens with advantage of low f stop. Zoom is kind of stiff, not smooth.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:

I use this on my DX Nikons along with a Tokina 12-28mm f/4. They both cover all the range I need for landscapes, cityscapes, travel, and time lapse. What I like: this lens has amazing image quality. On my DX cameras, this lens is sharper with better image quality wide open at f/2.8 than my cheap 35mm at its sweet spot, and it pulls in more detail and data for post processing than any of my prime lenses. Also, the 50mm to 75mm range at f/2.8 will get better bokeh than my 35mm prime at f/1.8. This lens is small, compact, light weight, and solid. It's like having 3 fast primes in one. CA, vignette, and lens flare are all well controlled and not an issue. The AF is dead on accurate through the zoom range, and the ability to close focus is great. What I don't like is: no VC or VR. Nevertheless, after using this lens for over 16 months, it gave what I demanded from it, great image quality, and performance. Thus, it's a keeper.

I got this lens with the hope that I can have a decent walk around lens for the price... and honestly I did BUT after taking some pics I realize that they were soft and the focus points were off.
I did some research and found that I had a back/front focus problem, again I did some research on how to fix that on my D7100 and that worked pretty good, Well so I thought, images within 6 to 8 ft were sharp anything outside of that range was not, well some of you might be thinking ... do some more adjusting, well I couldn't my AF fine tune was set to +20 by this time and no more room and that was where I got my best results, if only I had like +25 that may have helped. SO maybe I got a bad one or maybe thats the best I can get

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:

I recently got this lens for low light photography and inside shooting, but during the initial testing I used is all over. This is a great buy. It is not the Nikon 27-70 2.8 but it is 75% less expensive. I love this lens. It is clear, clean, sharp, fast, focuses w\quickly and very versatile. I have a Nikon 28-300 which is my travel lens. Some may say this lens is wasteful due to overlap, but This lens is by far superior to the Nikon. I use it on my D610. It was worth every penny. When compared to the Nikon lens it does not appear as rugged or well built but the nikon lens is built like a tank. This is light and pleasant.

I found this used in a local photog shop in Bismarck at half new. I was lured by the 2.8 across all focal lengths. I am very pleased with this lens in the test shots I've taken so far. The autofocus is a little noisy and sounds kind of weird, but hey, it works fine.
I wouldn't say the focus is super fast, but it really isn't that slow and you can't beat the price. I'd pay new for it knowing what I know now. I have never owned a Tamron before. All I have are Nikons. But I am pleased. Macro is so-so, but I've never owned a macro lens. Maybe I expect too much.

If u cant afford the 24-70mm well the 28-75mm is almost close to it actually it the older model to the 24-70mm .. has fantastic background blur and petty sharp pictures produced ... the only complaint i have is that it may have some softness when it gets to the edges but if u set it to 4-5/6 at 50mm you will get the sharpest pic out of this lens .... its also pretty good in low light ... iv taken some great pics with this lens

Fast enough for indoor use at parties or family events where I can quickly grab the camera for candid shots. Very happy with the quality of the lens, the picture and a good price.

This lens I purchased for portraits and weddings as I seem to be offered plenty of this work. I am a solid enthusiast getting close to full time pro level. As money can influence many choices in this field I feel this is a really good sensible purchase. It's pretty easy to drop big dollars on a lens in this category and I will say this lens is worth a look. Some may say it's heavy but it should be, it's built well. Focus is fast and sharp. Low light levels seem to bring out the best of this lens. I do recommend this lens be in everyones bag.

I bought this lens with hope to avoid heavy spending on the Nikon 24-70mm lens. Got the lens as promised fast and safe. I wanted to try the lens and tried to photography my baby.
Outcomes: colors are very nice with good contrast. The problem I had was with the focus and the zoom ring. First, and the reason I returned the lens, the focus point was off by about an inch to from target. I tried to photograph the face of the baby and instead the face was blurry but the ear or baby's sleeper was sharp. I conducted a number of test and the results were the same, unpredictable focus point.
In addition, I found that the focus ring was difficult to turn and felt too tight. As a result, I returned the lens and went for the "grail" (Nikon 24-70). Will follow with comparison.

Bang for buck can't be beat! This is a fantastic lens that is just as sharp as some L glass! I highly recommend this Tamron.

I've had this lens a few weeks now and it hasn't come off my Nikon D7100, I love it! Its been great for people photos and nature, just a great walk-around lens. The focus is fast, even in low light. The build quality and size also seem just right. Its also good for close up photography, got some great flower shots.

I purchased one 3 or 4 years ago. While visiting my daughter whom I had a couple years age give my old D200 after I purchased a new D800. I gave her my old Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens. And order myself a second one.
