Metal shoe mounts, Locking mechanisms, AF Illuminator that is always pointed directly where it is needed even when your SB-800 or SB-600 is mounted on a bracket. Simply put, it does the job it was made to do, and it does it well. Quality Nikon Product. [...] The plastic used on this product does not build confidence in the cords durability. It may be preferable if Nikon would start making more products with metal housings. This cord also doesn't have the additional ports on the side to expand lighting possibilities as the SC-28, and the previous SC-17 cords have. Still, if you need a TTL cord for your Nikon equipment, and you own either a SB-800 or SB-600 this is a great choice.

The SC-29 does what it is supposed to do and it does it well - but it is not rugged or long lasting under daily use. Unfortunately, it's chincy plastic "made in China" construction of the hotshoe base renders it a bit delicate. I shoot many events, sports, and weddings. The SC-29 lasts for me about a year before it simply pops apart unexpectedly or starts causing erratic connections with the camera's settings for no apparent reason. The hotshoe is susceptible to becoming loose - probably the reason for the erratic connection to the camera. I always keep a new backup of this unit in my camera bag when shooting important events because it can die or break unexpectedly without warning.

Great, but a issue

By Bruce

This cord connects the flash shoe to a bracket mounted flash, transfering all metering and setup information. It works very well in this manner.

I use this bracket with the flash attached 80% of the time. The problem with this cable is that the shoe is not attached to the base in the same quality that the flash shoe is attached to the camera. From experience, the shoe will come loos, the connections will fail within 2 years and will need to be replaced. Nikon would make a better product, regarding shoe connection, if they cared.

Works fine. Gets the job done to get the flash off-camera. The assist lamp has been worth the additional price for shooting in lower light levels.

SC-29 Works Great

This is the second time I purchased this cable. I had the first cable for 5 years until I dropped the bracket and broke the housing. I didn't hesitate to purchase it for a second time since it worked so well in the past.

I don't like the look of direct on camera flash. Sometimes bouncing the light off of a white ceiling isn't possible. That's where this cable comes in. A Pocket Wizard, or similar solution would provide more freedom, but at double/triple the cost.

I have an SC-17, but it was not quite long enough, so I bought the SC-29 that reached to 9 feet. I use the SC-29 to connect my SLR to my SB 800 in the Creative Lighting System mode as the Master flash.

If there is an original accessory, that's what I like to use with my gear. So, this is an original made by Nikon TTL cord with AF Assist, works like a charm intended, fits snuggly. The only drawback that it's made in China, but I hope that the quality control over there at the factory just as good as in Japan. Anyway, on my opinion Pro equipment of Japanese brand should made exclusively in Japan, especially if it costs like one.
