This is the third Justin Spring Clamp that I've bought, because it's a great tool for shooting with off-camera flash on location. The unusual nature of my flash subjects requires that my gear be highly portable, which the Justins are. In a sense, one Justin clamp can substitute for a lightstand, a micro ballhead, and a cold shoe, since you can attach a number of them to one light stand if you're short on stands (provided that you weight the stand sufficiently with sand bags or something similar).

One of my favorite pieces of gear for working with PocketWizard Flexes and Speedlites is the Manfrotto Micro Ballhead, which you can place on top of a lightstand and then position your flash in any direction or way that you want. The Justin clamps go them one better, if you're shooting say, with five or more Speedlites, as I often do. You can attach any number of Justin clamps to one light stand (provided you weight the stand), and then combine the power of however many flash units by turning them in the same direction, or turn them in different directions for more coverage and varied intensities of light. The cold shoes are well-designed to hold your Flex or Speedlite securely, and the clamp is strong enough to attach securely to a light stand or tripod or any number of other types of objects, while not being so "strong" that you would have trouble opening their jaws.

As is usual with Manfrotto, the build and design of the product is first-rate.

The 175F Manfrotto Justin Spring Clamp is a wonderful thing, except for one fatal flaw: it exists to provide a cold shoe mounting point, but the cold shoe provided is made of cheap plastic that breaks easily.

Which means whatever expensive photo accessory you mount on this thing is near certain to fall off and hit the ground.

The part cannot be repaired, but it can be replaced. My recommendation is the ProMediaGear Cold Shoe Adapter with 1/4" Thread B&H # PRCS1. This adds considerable cost to this Manfrotto Justin Clamp, but without it the Justin Clamp is worse than worthless -- it drops the gear it is supposed to support, almost certain to cause damage, and potentially interrupt photo shoots.

I own multiple clamps, and have replaced the official Manfrotto part numerous times. This is a definite design and materials flaw present on every 175F clamp, not an individual isolated failure. And I do not abuse equipment, either. Any close inspection of this device new out of the box (the thin plastic cold shoe rails specifically) will reveal it to be woefully inadequate for the intended purpose.

I've attached cell phone pics showing the problem. A piece of white index card was placed in the cold shoe for contrast.

Comments about Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe:

Only used this once so far and I am wondering why I didn't get one before. It was a little hard to open the clamp. But I suspect over time it will loosen up. Which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Still love it.

Comments about Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe:

Purchased 3 of the Justin Spring clamps for use with off camera flash (Nikon). The clamp is very well built EXCEPT, the hot shoe which is plastic, and has now broken 3 times already, and I have only used these in the field 8 or 9 times. Considering the almost $[$]for 3 that I spent, the the very poor build quality of the hot shoe, I am more than a little disappointed. Because of this plastic part, I would NOT recommend

Comments about Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe:

I had been using a tripod with a flash bracket to shoot real estate. The bracket I had allowed me to remove the flash easily and hold it where ever I wanted. The bracket wore out , they are no longer made and I was at a loss as to what to do. A colleague mentioned this clamp and I'm so glad he die. I mount the clamp on to a regular light stand and keep it as a key light near the camera. If I need too I can easily remove the light and hold it in different places. It's also handy lot clamp onto the tops of doors. The clamp is pretty stiff and sometimes I have to use both hands to clamp it. But most do the time it's on the light stand for which there is an adaptor on the clamp. Easy peasy. Good product.

Comments about Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe:

This is great for mounting a flash to just about anything, but the plastic shoe is brittle resulting in the mount breaking very easily. I've gone through two shoe mounts in less than a year. Fair disclosure, the breaks were a result of impacts, but they were minor impacts that in my opinion should not have resulted in a broken shoe mount. On the flip side, better to break a $ plastic part than rip the hotshoe off a $ flash. I would still recommend this item, but I would also recommend buying a replacement and keep it on hand for when yours breaks!

Comments about Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe:

This clamp is incredibly useful for my application of positioning multiple speedlites for architectural photography. But there is a fatal flaw: the cold shoe atop the ball head is made of plastic, and the plastic rails that are gripped by the flash shoe are thin and break easily. At that point, when nothing can be mounted in the cold shoe securely, the entire clamp is pointless.

This gadget is so useful. Being able to clip it anywhere without an awkward nightstand is very handy. I clipped it to a small end table as a fill light in studio when photographing children. It is so easy to move it around this way...forward back, left right. An awesome product. Can't even think of how to knock it.

I use these clamps often when I am on site and need some light. Speed lights are perfect with the clamp and it either uses its own jaws to clamp something or mount to a super clamp.

Comments about Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe:

I purchased this Manfrotto justin clamp about a year and a half ago. Note that the clamp itself is made of fairly solid metal construction. The problem is with the cold flash swivel shoe. The cold shoe is made of cheap plastic material. Like other reviewers noted, I also had issues with flashes slipping out of the cold shoe due to the fact that it relies on the locking mechanism on the flash and is not sturdy. After light use over 6 months, the plastic lip that holds the flash in place actually cracked and broke off and now the clamp is useless. I am surprised that Manfrotto used such cheap construction on the cold shoe, as I've had great experience with build quality on other Manfrotto products. I replaced it with, and recommend, the justin clamp made by Impact. The cold shoe is made of metal material and has a locking spring clamp like most accessories designed to secure flash units.

Good size clamp for use in places where a lightstand is not available. Unlike some other reviewers I did not find the clamp too strong. It is strong enough to be secure but not crush things it is clamped on to. My quibble is that it is somewhat expensive for what it is.

This is my first Justin Clamp. I've found it convenient for using a remote SB-900 speedlight secured to a lightstand, tripod or clipped to shelf or anywhere where you need to introduce light. I like the fact that my SB-900 external battery pack can be secured within the jaws when using the clamp on a lightstand. I will definitely buy 2 more in the future.

I love this clamp! Trees, tables, cars, even people!!!!! I used this during a maternity shoot and attached it to the silk sheet the client had wrapped around her and it provided a halo of light around her sides at her belly. It gave the photo an added element that I have never seen before that the client LOVED! She ended up buying a 11x16 canvas print of it and asked me to sign it.

It clamps to anything and also has attachments for light poles.

By far the best and most versatile clamp I have used for mounting speedlites on location and it works just about anywhere!! After borrowing one from a friend for a shoot I bought two that will stay in my bag at all times and plan on picking up two more in the near future. This clamp won't replace the need for light stands but will allow you to place multiple speedlites at various heights and angles on the same stand. Additionally, you can attach a speedlite to any object strong enough to hold it. For example a door, chair, table edge or even a tree branch becomes a light stand with this clamp. The cold shoe is fully adjustable so you don't have to fight with tweaking the clamp once you attach it trying to change the angle of the light. I wish I had some of these sooner!

Flash shoe came off when tightening. Seems like there are too many things to tighten on mount shaft. Gorilla glued so should be ok but be aware if you hang upside down. Tried to remove shoe mount from clamp and was stripped from factory. Why you ask? Wanted to add another swivel mount other than what was on there. Still giving it 4 stars though. Use this for POV cameras at weddings and events. These attach securely to poles, tree limbs, track lighting, etc., etc.. Just be aware the shoe is not attached that securely. Glue on if you like what's attached to it. Or am
                              I being obtuse?

A must have for any speedliter. Perfect for those who are working in the field but certainly comes in handy within the comforts and luxuries of a studio. Man grotto has priced this simple metal product too high, in my opinion. Nevertheless, I have purchased two. I prefer to stick with the pros and accept no imitations. Ball head works wonderfully.be sure to buy 175f-1 newer issue than 175F....different ballheads

I'll like it even better when I figure out what the screw in the side is for and once I've replaced the cold shoe with a stroboframe shoe.

But the thingamajig on the back doubles as an umbrella holder, and by unscrewing the cold shoe I can screw the ball head directly into the top of a stand and clamp reflectors etc with the clamp...it's a pretty swell multifunctional thing. Though, whether or not it's better than the Impact knockoff, shrug?
