Great MacroFlash that Works Well with Sony A7 Series

By Peter

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ringlight Flash for Sony Alpha & Minolta Maxxum:

This is an excellent macroflash and is the second Sigma EM-140 DG that I have purchased. The first was the Pentax version, which I sold several years ago when I moved over to the Sony A7 series. I use the macroflash with a Sony A7rii and, mostly, a Sony FE 90mm f2.8 macro lens. I had hesitated buying the Sony version of this EM-140 DG because I wasn't keen on using an adapter to convert the macroflash's Sony/Minolta foot to the newer Sony MSI hotshoe. But, I finally decided that I would give it a try. As far as I can tell, when you use the Sony ADPMAA Multi-Interface Shoe Adapter, all functionality of the macroflash appears to be preserved. I have also also used the Travor Sony Camera MI Interface Hot Shoe Adapter HC-513. Both work well. It's possible to alter the power output of each of the two flashtubes in both automatic and manual mode. Attached is a closeup image of the Travor HC-513 with a hard shadow to the rear right when the right flash tube power is set to F8. I can't address the wireless compatibility because I don't own a compatible Sigma flash with a wireless transmitter/receiver. The manual is not very helpful, but between the owners manual and playing with the controls, this flash can provide you with pleasing results. At F22 and 1:1 setting on the 90mm macro, and the A7Rii in Aperture Priority mode, the macroflash works excellently in auto-TTL mode. The camera defaults to "fill-flash" and 1/60th of a second. However, as the subject distance increases, you have to open up the aperture so that at a working distance of 3 feet, and the A7Rii set to F11, the macroflash provides very good fill-flash illumination. Working with the camera and flash both in manual mode requires practice and iteration of settings to get optimal illumination. One other thing. The Box I opened contained a 55mm ring and instead of a 58mm as described on the B&H web page, a 62mm adapter ring. A note inside the box said that the 62mm adapter ring replaces the 58mm ring.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ringlight Flash for Sony Alpha & Minolta Maxxum:

I have gone for the full switch to mirrorless photography. I've had the Canon D series cameras for years with the macro 100mm lens and dedicated ring flash for dental photography as it has been the standard in our industry.
Move over Canon. Sony Alpha 6000 with the Sony/Zeiss 90mm 2.8 macro with Sigma twin source ring flash is SOOO much more sharp. Incredible detail. I'm love the feature of the flash that allows stronger flash from one side of the ring than the other to give more depth to the photograph.
Pair this with a PolarEyes cross polarization filter for shade matching and you have the (current) ultimate clinical camera in esthetic dentistry.

Nice, cost competitive addition for macro work that is not otherwise well lit.

Dedicated Sony/Minolta flash control module works as advertised with both my Maxxum 7D and Sony Alpha a700 and provides good TTL Auto exposure results with my Konica-Minolta AF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. This lens is 55mm filter threads and included adapter matches it.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ringlight Flash for Sony Alpha & Minolta Maxxum:

I bought the EM-140 DG Macro Ringlight flash in January 2012 for use with my Sony Alpha 700 and 100mm Sony Macro lens. I have frequently attempted to do some macro photography without the use of a dedicated macro flash and although the Sony Macro lens works perfectly well, lighting, or at least adequate lighting, of subjects have always been a problem.

Not so with the new flash – it is simple and easy to use, got it working in no time and managed to take some very acceptable photos of a variety of subjects from the usual small flowers to insects in flight ! It was definitely worth the money spent and I wish I did this at the same time I bought the lens 2 years ago.

My only real negative comment about the flash is the hotshoe connector – it feels very flimsy to say the least. The rest of the flashlight and controller is well built and sturdy though.

My overall impression of the flash is very favourable and positive. I'd recommend the flashlight to anyone without reservation.

On camera flash control has a cable to the front mounted lamps which conveniently screws into the front filter ring. Functions using Sony's ADI for excellent results. Also very useful is the normal light lamp which stays on for a short time while you compose a photo in total darkness.

I use the EM-140 DG Macro for oral surgery pictures and I achieved the best pictures quality I have ever seen. For this pupose I recomend the "M" position with F:1/125 and A:32 - TTL function, fill flash and WB auto.
