When I dove head first into the world of filmming with DSLR's I was told I would need to get my sound in an external manner since the audio off the DSLR isn't that great. I knew the RODE products were known for quality so I got the B&H RODE NTG 2 Kit.

The choice I made was definatly the right one. The sound out of the external mic is fantastic. My film projects finally looked like films and now sounded like them as well. I use this as my main source to capture sound on all my shoots now. The price for the kit is more then resonable especially once you hear the kind of quality you get out of it.

There is honestly only one real problem though. It comes in the form of low audio gain when used with the Zoom H4n. Seperatly the devices are amazing but together the problem arises. I was definatly worried when I saw the audio levels were not breaking -6 (it should be around -12) when I was recording at mic volume of 100! I read around and found I would need a preamp but being the director, director of photography, co-sound guy, and art director I didn't want to carry around a pre-amp that needed to be plugged in (I was filming by a river).

Luckily RODE has made something to help this situation in the form of the RODE D-Powerplug. It adds 20db gain which is way more then enough to get the right audio levels. So with the Zoom H4n, the RODE NTG-2 and the RODE D-Powerplug I saved easily over $300-$500.

Although it's not the best sounding mic I have ever heard, all other shotguns that I've worked with cost at least three times this one, so I don't think it's fair to compare them.

In today's urban cities, noise is always a problem, but I was able to get great, focused sound outdoors, which is where this mic shines. It doesn't deal too well with reflections, so indoors the sound can get muddy. This is a problem inherent to shotgun mics, but I find it's more pronounced in this one. The solution? Acoustic treatment or consider investing also on a hypercardioid.

I like the NTG-2's output with phantom power better than with batteries. I thought it would be just the opposite, but I found that with P48 it needs less gain, which is the way to go if you're using a Zoom H4n. So, if you do not really need the battery feature, consider the even lighter NTG-1 — your boom arm will thank you.

Self-noise sounds very acceptable to me, but I didn't use it in a really quiet environment yet. There's a weird phasing sound when moving the mic that I attribute to off-axis coloration.

An alternative to this mic would be the Audio-Technica AT897, check that one out too.

Returned this mic for the senheiser. It was well worth the extra $100. I just expected better pick up per subject distance and the senheiser was better.

Seriously have been so impressed with this mic. It has a great natural sound I don't even have to do any post work. Physically its built like a tank. I still do on my higher end projects but over all I would be happy to pay double for this mic.

I use it with my H4n in interviews and its perfect.

Bottom line - you get what you pay for in audio recording equipment. This mic is an excellent value and provides great audio for the price. Mic can be used with phantom power (48V) or with a AA battery. Mic has good frequency response and sound isolation.

I use it for run and gun journalistic style shooting and voice over work. It does pick up a lot on the low end of the range. This means it picks up a good amount of echo when used inside, though this is easily correctable in post. I love the way it sounds in a sound booth, nice and deep. It's far from perfect but for the price it a good mic.

Rode always has great audio and this was exactly what I expected from rode. I use it with my panosanic AG-AC 90 and the audio is flawless. It has a highpass filter that works great as well. I love this thing! I had to use this to record an event and although you heard some of the plates and silverware clinging in the crowd at points, it picked up the speakers voice very clearly. It was not muffled or faint.

This has been a great mic for us so far. We were very low budget and using the built-in mic on the DSLR. A little money became available and this mic was on the list. The sound quality is light-years ahead of what we were getting from the built-in camera mic. Can't wait to put this through many years of use.

I bought this as my first real-ish shotgun mic, after using the Video Mic Pro on a boompole. The VMP had no effective way to mitigate wind noise, so I got the NTG2 to use with a Blimp, which could probably withstand a hurricane.

The NTG2 produces great vocals, but even with proper booming, I really have to crank my recorder to pick up a decent signal, unless my subject is naturally a loud person.

There's pretty noticeable hiss, which is a pitfall for me. I will keep this as a back-up, but I've already decided to shell out for the NTG3, which is much much better.
