One of the best lenses I ever used

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

I was loaned a 28/2.8 Ai-s by a friend when I first began shooting Nikon, long long ago. I instantly fell in love, and after he asked for me to return it I immediately went I bought a copy of my own. I've used it on just about every kind of Nikon camera you could imagine, it is so good that I even used it for a while on the D90 which can't meter with Ai-s lenses. All I can say is that, in every case, the lens is pixel-to-pixel sharp. In other words, one pixel is bright white, and the adjacent pixel is pitch black, capturing huge contrast over the smallest scale that can be resolved by the camera, even at the highest resolutions I've shot (D810) it performs this way. It is light, it is indestructible, there are no wearable parts, there is no distortion, CA is not an issue at all, and it feels like a magical gem in my hands with the beautiful action of the focus ring.

Is there a downside? Not really. If you try hard, you can get some flare with this lens, particularly with a dirty clear filter and the Sun hanging just outside the field of view...I found that a HN-2 hood works perfectly to mitigate these situations, if you must shoot toward the Sun.

You should also know that this lens is highly rated for reverse macro, get a Nikon BR-2A reversal ring and you can get ~2x magnifications. If you put on some extension tubes, you can easily push this to 4x or higher (although you will probably need flash). I'm amazed at the high quality of the reverse mounted shots, the lens was NOT designed to work this way by Nikon, but it was built so well that it does a marvelous job anyways.

If you will only own one Nikon manual lens...this is it!

Super Lens, Great Value

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

As a nature photographer, this lens is a 'must have for my bag. It is one of the lightest lenses you will find, anywhere (250g), it is extremely sharp, and (best of all) you can buy a Nikon BR-2A adapter, flip the lens around, and use it for super-macro photography (2.1x), giving you essentially 2 lenses for the price of one. You get a good wide angle and a super-macro lens in one purchase. It doesn't get any better than that.

The best prime lens ever!

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

The lens arrived today and I am so happy with the build quality and images. This is the best prime lens and Nikon still makes and sell them brand new. The color pop, contrast, 3D pop and bokeh feels like shooting with a Leica lens. The lens will last for many many years to come. Thanks to BHPhoto for still selling this and keeping in your stock. I will definitely check on my next AIS prime lens soon.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

There's a reason the Nikkor AI-S lenses are still being used (and still being made, in the case of this focal length): they're great quality! While I've only owned it for a few weeks, it's a delight to use and shoot with. I'm using it primarily for video, so I have no need for autofocus. I'm especially impressed with the very close minimal focus distance...granted, you'll get your typical wide angle distortion, but it's great for certain types of shots.

As with the other Nikkor AI-S lenses, it seems to have a warmer tone than the Canon line (I'm using this lens on a Canon 5d Mark III, by the way).

Highly recommend!

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

This lens is completely Manual. Both the Focus and the Aperture rings are manual use only, and can not be operated by the camera. This doesn't bother ME too much but it might bother you.

It is very small and light-weight, but yet built very sturdy. Both of these are pro's.

I've been using it with my D810, and it is working great. I have acheived some very nice landscapes. I really have enjoyed taking portraits of people with the landscape behind them. The lens gets very sharp focused results on the face.

I've been using a polarizer on the lens, and it fits nicely.

If you know how to manually operate a camera/lens, want something on the smaller side, want something for landscapes (wide-angle shooting) that can do portraits and people, this lens could be for you.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

One of Nikons finest AI-s lenses. The center sharpness is fantastic at every aperture and the corners are tack sharp from F/5.6 on. I use this lens almost exclusively now for landscape photography on my D800e. Of course it is well built like any AI-s lens and that's one of the reasons I chose it over the new 28mm 1.8G lens: Built quality, hard infinity stop, small size, image quality, little chromatic aberrations. I have tested this lens against the Zeiss 28mm F/2 and other than bokeh, the Nikkor blew the Zeiss away at every aperture except at F/2.8 where they were equal. The Zeiss has much more chromatic aberration (Green and Magenta fringing), distortion and fall-off. Many people consider the 28mm focal length to be a street photography-style focal length but I actually prefer to use it for landscape photos as there is less distortion than most 24mm lenses and not as tight as a 35mm lens. Overall this is an excellent lens and even on high resolution FX cameras like the d800e it is stellar!

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

I did a lot of research before buying this lens, and everything I read said that this was one of Nikon's best lenses ever - and having tested it now extensively myself, I think I agree. As a landscape photographer, I shoot almost exclusively around f8 or f11, so I can't comment on the lens' performance at f2.8 - but at smaller apertures on my Nikon D810, it delivers absolutely beautiful images that are stunningly sharp from edge to edge. As a bonus, the straight-sided aperture blades deliver excellent sunstars, too. And needless to say, an old-school made-of-metal lens like this feels so much more substantial and well-made than any modern, plasticky equivalent, with super-smooth manual focusing action, etc. I would very highly recommend this lens!

So good I even use it on DX...

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

This lens creates the best wide angle images I've ever produced. Seriously sharp, when you zoome in you can see than colors jump across extreme values between neighboring pixels, meaning that it is far sharper than the sensor can capture. White to black, red to blue, violet to yellow, you name it, this just delivers great color in ultrafine detail.

It is so good that I even shoot it on a D90, which makes a nice compact light setup that I can throw in my backpack without even noticing that I am carrying anything extra. Unfortunately, the D90 and other DX Nikons do not meter with manual lenses, so with this setup I have to shoot in manual mode, and account for both exposure and focus myself (the green LED focus indicator does work fine on the D90). But the extra work is worth it when you can shoot with such a spectacular piece of glass. It is fun since it makes for a more intimate experience with my lens, it is like my very first SLR experience in the days before AF, when I fell in love with cameras and high level photography.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens:

Perfect: No. The best 28 mm wide angle lens that Nikon makes: YES.I have never seen a sharper or more contrasty 28mm wide angle lens than this one. Not even Leica or Zeiss are superior. Also, very low distortion. A fault: it has significant vignetting at f/2.8, gets mush better at f/4 and none visible at f/5.6 (shooting the sky or other such scenes. Sharpest at both f/4 and f/5.6. No lens is smoother focusing than this one. With the Nikon D759, best focus is pretty much at the center of the "green meatball". I would not let the fact that it is manual focus, only put me off. AF would be nice, but that is not a deal breaker because the lens is otherwise so excellent that NO other Nikkor wide angle fixed focal length lens can beat it!

It focuses real close, no distortion, sharp across the frame, manual focus to infinity is perfect too. On top of it all, it is small and light.

All in all I highly recommend this lens with all sensors.

If you're looking for a wide angle lens with minimal distortion, your search ends here. This is the best lens in this price range for Nikon users, especially if you're into architectural or real estate photography. It's also well suited for automotive photography. The stand-out points are the sharpness and easy performance. I also found that the lens is great for isolating details in close-up photography (not macro). Barrel distortion is noticeable if your camera is not level, but it's far less than any cheaper brand or any comparable Nikon lens.

I'm a professional having used everything from 8x10 to 35mm and honestly, haven't found a lens I like more. I presently have been using this on my D600 and D3. The sharpness is incredible wide open down to f22. The feel and handling ability of this lens is a dream. Not being auto focus is an asset. It allows you to control the area your concentrating on without worrying if your autofocus focus on something that isn't important.
By all means I highly recommend this lens.

                        Many many thanks to B & H ... !!!
3 days only to receive the item at my home in Italy !!!

This lens is absolutely clear ... absolutely performing ... with an exciting way of focusing ...

Very light and small ... it will permit to everyone to get spectacular pictures without carry more unuseful load.
I have in my bag 14-24 f2.8 G but I'm thinking to sell it and substitute with fixed lenses.

Using these new Nikkor lenses without depth of field marks ... it's impossible achieve the hyper focal technique .
                        It's not good ...
