I've been using this lens for a few weeks now and am impressed. This lens is very sharp and is reasonably fast. Image quality is great. Chromatic aberration is almost nonexistent with this lens even in very high contrast scenes (snowy mountain in direct sunlight contrasted by shade from large trees).
Autofocus is fast and accurate in most conditions with the exception of low light scenes - which I expected.
One thing I don't like is that the build quality feels inferior to my other primes (EF 85mm f/1.8 USM & EF 28mm f/1.8 USM).
However, it is a very compact, lightweight lens which makes it easy to carry.

I bought this lens because I wanted a lens for some occasional macro photos on some nature hikes. I was also considering the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM (as well as the L version).
This macro lens is perfect for me because I am not so interested in macro that I could justify getting the more expensive, bulkier lenses. I need to save the space in my camera bag for my other lenses that get used more.

If macro photography is your primary interest and can afford it, you are better off with the 100mm or 100mm L or the 180mm L Canon makes - all of which will allow more working distance and more diffused background blur.

If you only need macro sometimes and like to pack as little weight as possible, this lens is a great choice.

So I wanted a Macro Lens for my Canon 60D. The EF 100 Macro seemed like a good choice, but 160mm (considering the 1.6X crop factor) seemed too much. I was right (for my needs). The 60mm gives me good room to work AND surprisingly has a FANTASTIC bokeh for portraits. Beautifully shaped round highlights makes almost any portrait a masterpiece! The fast aperture gives you room to work with low ISO and adequate shutter speed. The downside of this great piece of glass is the slow autofocus (which one could expect given the greater range of focus).

Love macro

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I have been surprised that I don't like this more. I own the Canon 100 macro and love it. I thought this would be almost as good and lighter. For the price, it does a good job, but the 100 is a much better macro.

I'm loving my 60mm macro!

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I was using a 100mm macro to try and capture snowflakes. I wasn't having the best luck with it. So, I figured it was time to go with the the 60mm. It was much better and easier to shoot with my new lens.
I also tried capturing water drops hitting water in a bowl that I placed underneath a dripping icicle.. it took some effort to focus on the perfect place. A little time and patience paid off. It's not easy shouting moving water drops!!

Great lens, exceptional quality photos, short-distance work.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

This is a great macro lens! The quality of the photos I have snapped thus far down to the pixel and corner to corner are awesome. The sharpness is just fantastic. I also used this lens for some street-portrait work and the sharpness paid off here as well. Note that for macro work with this lens you need to get very close, so if you are photographing stationary objects (quarters or apples) or animals who won't scare away (snails) then you are set. But for fast moving or easily-scared animals you might want to go with a different lens. And this lens has a very small minimum focusing distance, necessary for this lens but also noteworthy. Overall very happy and satisfied with this lens thus far.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I bought this lens for both fun and work. Fun to get detailed shots of insects and helped me take pictures of jewelry markings for pieces I had to sell. Shots come out very sharp on my 70D.

a good lens, hard to use

By Uldis

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I use the lens to take close-up photos of insects. The problem I am having is a very shallow depth of field; increasing thew f-stop does not solve the problem. With a tripod, the area in focus is very sharp and finely detailed. The lens can also be used for general, all-purpose photography. The problem in this mode is getting a medium-telephoto view, and this cannot be corrected by a zoom. I miss the 50mm macro lens on my old Nikon when I was doing film photography.

Great lens, but can't just shoot

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I compared the 60mm to 100mm, and besides cost difference and weight ( + for 60) and macro shooting distance + for 100) , My differentiator was the ability to shoot macros without a tripod. Well, you can't. You need a tripod, or to keep it on the ground, table or wherever. A great lens, and I saved money, and weight...The 100 is a better lens, but obviously more $$$ and weight. I've attached a photo from my 60

I purchased this lens to photograph older b & w negatives by placing the negatives on an Artograph light pad. It has worked fine for that purpose, and I am satisfied with the digital prints from this process. I am making 8 x 10 prints only.

Great for close-up shots of insects, coins, or whatever!

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

This is exactly the lens I was looking for! I have a T6S, and wanted to get close-up shots of various plant life, insects, and my coin collection. This fits the price range and quality I was looking for. It might be wise to get a lens greater than 60mm if you plan on taking photos of skittish bugs like butterflies or bees, but that would be the only reason why I'd get some other product.

I just started in the world of Macro photography. I began with extension tubes which are very good and practical. However this lens makes Macro photography a good deal easier. The price is very reasonable.
Also, as an aside, B & H Photo was very helpful and went above and beyond from a customer service perspective in solving an issue I had with Canon.

I had couple of test shot last weekend while diving in Monterey California with visibility near zero (okay may be 1-2 feet of viz. This lens worked very well. I would recommend this lens for underwater macro as well as topside macro work.

B & H once again shipped this to me very fast, all came in well packed package. Well done B & H and thanks understanding your customer's needs!

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I purchased this lens to compliment my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Lens as I wanted a lens to fill the gap below telephoto and my Sigma. The 60mm field of view equivalent on my Canon T5i (700D) is 96mm which is great for portraits and pets.

The macro setting was another reason to buy and frankly I'm loving its capability. For product shots to the creepy bugs and flowers it's awesome.

The images have been pretty sharp as well.

This isn't a great lens for video as the USM motor is kind of loud when focusing. I find the lens focus-hunts a bit in lower light. I'm giving it 5 stars though because of its versatility, low cost and sharp imagery.

This lens was a bit rough to get used to at first. But the more I use it, the more I absolutely fall in love with this lens. It takes great macro shots, but you do have to stand fairly close to what you are taking a photo of in order to take the shot. This is perfect for weddings for the fine detail, water drops, and flowers but would not suggest this lens for those that are wanting to take photos of insects or hummingbirds at a distance.
