B&H customer support helped with all my questions about this product when purchasing it. They also offered support on how to set up and use the strobe. The strobe was easy to use with my Canon 40D right out of the box so no phone call was necessary. Using the strobe and soft box help eliminate all the hard shadows when taken pictures of my pets. Now I can use my 430EX as a fill-in flash. Strobe performs exactly the way I was hoping, and I will be looking into remote fire capabilities in the future.

I've had this set for about two years, and it's gotten occasional use -- meaning I used it maybe once a month, and each use saw 200-400 firings.

The light stand included is pretty good, the softbox is OK (hard to set up, and I could never get mine to seem *perfectly* put together). The flash itself was pretty great, it gave off great light and was very reliable. Wish it had a way to turn off the slave, but overall I was pretty happy with it.

Then I was shooting a friend's maternity photos last weekend, and the flash committed suicide. The bulb didn't blow -- in fact, I still have the original bulb. But something internally popped, very loudly, and the unit visibly put off quite a bit of smoke. And now when I shake it there's stuff rattling around inside, no doubt the shreds of whatever exploded inside. I'll probably dissect it out of curiosity, and who knows, maybe it's fixable.

The first one I got didn't work correctly. The test button and the sync input were not working. B&H sent me a replacement. It's not the brightest but ok as a first monolight

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

This is a replacement as the one I got with the kit failed from little use after the warranty expired. I hope this one lasts.
It's very easy to operate and with the kit is a fine system.

This is a great kit for starting out with studio lighting. The monolight itself is perfect. One of the softbox corners punctured in the initial assembly. It is nevertheless still useable.

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

I use this kit for portraits. Combined with a reflector, it currently does a great job. Its recycle times are accurate and the variable adjustment knob for flash output allows precise control-a feature you wouldn't expect for the cost. The kit also comes with a soft box and mounting ring. The only improvement I would recommend is the light stand which is a little flimsy. I use a much stronger stand.

The Lights of My Life

By T&R Photography

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

These lights are a great addition to my current light set. I was in the market for two lights, so I could have a four light set up. They are not expensive and are a great value, I may purchase two more. Used them for a wedding, worked great.

Great Starter Strobe

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

Simple to set up, easy to control, and produces a even light spread. I recommend buying some type of umbrella or soft box along with this monolight.

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

I recently purchased the Impact VC-500WL Kit (B&H # IMVC500WL3K, MFR # VC-500WL3K; 3-500Ws Monolights, with Transmitter Kit) and bought this monolight to use as a hairlight when I do portraits. It does a fantastic job and more, as I found out when I covered a very small home wedding that allowed me to take it along to play with for kicks and giggles. I used the softbox that came in the kit as a main light (and didn't find anywhere near the problems setting up the softbox as some have posted here in these reviews) and got some excellent results when using it for headshots.

I only wished the transmitter that came with the 500's would fire the 120 when I use it as a hairlight. Anyways, excellent light kit for the price. Impact has some pretty cool lights and gear that can get you started making money NOW without mortgaging your home. Get it... decide later if you need to upgrade to a more expensive light system as you grow. 4 stars to keep them honest. Enjoy...

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

After less than a week of using these lights (2-3 dozen shots at most), one of the lights went up in smoke. Shipping the light for warranty will likely cost at least half of what the light is worth because of where I am located. Pay a few more bucks and get something of better quality.

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

Okay so I gave this a 5 Star because this two light set, with case and 2 soft box's is Soooooo cheap! Yes, the equipment is all plastic and of low quality materials. Yes if you are rough on equipment you will break this soon after you buy it. But for (around) $ you really can't beat it.I started out with this kit, it is great if you are looking to experiment/learn lighting without making a huge investment. It will do a decent job and honestly you CAN get great images with lower quality gear, it's all about how you use the gear. Recomendations: - Purchase some black duck tape and tape the corners of the soft box. They WILL rip.- Purchase a reflector or do what I did and buy a large piece of foam core (white) to bounce light. (you would be surprised at how great this works)Not pro gear. So reviews here giving 1-3 stars saying this is junk... well you aren't paying for high end equipment. This is low quality lighting at a low price. It will work great for a beginer.

I already own one of these monolights which I use as a hair light. I bought a second one so I can use them on both side of a model to create an edge light. I have a couple photo shoots with some body builders and swimsuit models and these would work well. I just have to make a snoot to direct the light better and lessen spills.

Comments about Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC):

Whereas the moonlight w/modeling light & power variator are OK for the money, the softbox epitomizes poor design with easily lost plastic anchoring connectors, thin bracket corner pockets that tear easily, and the softbox is difficult to assemble.
