I bought this to get the best of both worlds, telephoto and macro. I haven't been disappointed! Macro is as easy to use as pushing a switch. It must be in the 200-300 mm range for this and works best on manual focus. In macro setting, Auto focus it hunts too much to really zoom in on ones subject, but It takes really great macros. Used it telephoto at a rodeo event and got really good close up shots of the action. Auto focus works great, though when shooting birds in trees, might want to use manual focus if branches or twigs are in front of bird as they will be clear, and bird in background will be blurry.I have even taken indoor shots of pets and it works good, but have to have some distance between you and the subject. There is really nothing about it I don't like. Its light enough to hand hold even at the 300 mm length, although for night shots I would recommend a tripod. Comparable to more expensive lens making it a good buy for beginners.

This lens seems to work well but most photos are overexposed with the Pentax K110D. Set the expose .5 to 1 stop darker. Focus is inconsistent but with multishot setting, 1 of 3 appears in focus. Not all features of the K110D work with the lens. When using anything other than auto or program mode, attempting to reach the F Stop is difficult due to the design of the Pentax lens cover. But, overall, not a bad lens. But, if you need all features of the camera stay with the 50 - 200 Pentax lens. I have both and will probably not use this lens very often.

The best telephoto considering the price

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

I have a K50, since this Telephoto is a full frame the 70-300 became 105-450. Also I have a teleconverter x-2 from may old Pentax film also a full frame that is auto. This teleconverter bring the soom to 900 mm. The picture is not perfect but stil can be seen and focus has to be manual. But the Sigma by itself is great. The pictures are very net. Sometimes the autofocus hesitate in the 200-300 range but other than this is great. I will give five stars considering the price.

Amazing lens and outstanding value!

Impressive quality and response time for a telephoto zoom that costs less than $150.

I use it with my K-1 and it's been a great combination.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

I went to B&H to get a wide angle zoom (and I did, reviewed elsewhere here). While I was there, I asked Scott about a 2x teleconverter for the Pentax K series. But it seems as if Pentax only makes a 1.4x, in which case, "why bother"?"Instead," he said, "why not just get a decent low-cost tele-zoom?", and then pulled this thing from the rack. BOOM! It's the perfect lens for my $150 investment. Yep, there are faster lenses, sharper lenses, etc... but not for $150. I bought it.Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge later that afternoon, I gave this lens a Hard Shakedown. Here are my impressions:I have always liked Sigma glass. Back when I shot Pro, I had many Sigma lenses, and every last one of them was tack-sharp, built like a tank, and NEVER-EVER failed me.This lens feels a little-less robust, but not by much. I am no longer in "combat conditions" when shooting, so if I need to treat it with a little more TLC, no problem. To date, it's been knocked-around moderately, with no ill-effect. The zoom creeps a little bit when walking... "know your tools", and deal with it.It's LIGHT, which is a good thing. Because of that, I can carry my entire outfit with ease - I clocked ten miles in NYC that day (Dumbo to Central Park) carrying EVERYTHING, and had no isues. It's SHARP. Waaaaay sharper than I have any right to expect from a $150 tele-zoom. Off the Brooklyn, it sucked-in the Statue of Liberty with aplomb and ease, and rendered images that were just fine for my purposes, despite being handheld in the wind that was blowing. Again, I have used sharper lenses, but nowhere near this price point - I'm talking 10X the price. My only "con" (lower-case - this is not a "CON", just something to be aware of with a $150 lens) - the contrast is just a tad low. On a sunny day, you won't notice. On a cloudy day, bump the contrast just a little, either in the camera or via Photoshop. (In my Pentax K5, I built a a custom exposure mode for it - took me 3 minutes to do. In Photoshop, I built an Action just in case I forgot to set the camera... that took me 37 seconds, and not corrects any Needy photo with a mouse-click.)So, all-told, I'm very happy to have this little lens in my kit. It increases the scope of my photography vastly. I don't shoot "sports" aside from some drag-racing (which is where I miss my old $9,000 fast glass!), but for what I'm doing now, I love this thing. And a buck-fifty makes it a STEAL.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

Granted, I have not had a chance to compare this with other lenses other than an older model advanced point and shoot, but after taking many pictures with it over the past few months and reading reviews, here are my observations:

Auto focus works best in normal light. It may be "noisy," but its usually pretty quick and focuses on the main subject about 19 times out of 20. Sometimes the lens just goofs, and I don't know why.

I have taken pictures of smaller birds and other wildlife which requires maneuvering in low light and in areas with tiny branches and leaves. I find that I have to switch to manual focus since the lens either hunts or the camera does not know what to focus on and I end up getting a good picture of a twig with a blurry bird in the background. I am not sure this could be avoided regardless of whether it is the lens or the camera just because of the size of the conditions. I don't mind using manual focus, so this isn't a problem.

It is also very precise on what object is to be focused upon. Again, that might have something to do with the settings of the camera (by choosing a setting for fast objects vs. landscape), but something that is just a couple of inches behind the object you are focusing upon will be slightly out of focus sometimes.

I have read 1 and 2 star reviews on another website. However, that is a bit misleading if you are buying this for a Pentax camera since that particular website lumped in the reviews of the Pentax version with other manufacturers. The people with other brands of cameras complained of blurriness. However, Pentax comes with in-camera stabilization while other brands are located within the lens. Since this doesn't have an in-lens stabilization feature, then you are obviously going to have problems when not using a tripod.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

I bought this for my dad who recently got a Pentax K-7. His house backs up to the woods, so I thought he might like a lens with some reach to get pictures of the wildlife. We played around with it a bit and it looks pretty good to my eye for the price. Not as sharp as my Nikon 70-300VR, but for the price, it takes a pretty decent shot.
