This lens came with my 7DMkii kit and I've enjoyed using it quite a bit. The focus is fast & accurate and being able to focus under 5 feet on a 300mm lens makes for some big flat images with beautiful bokeh, even with the 5.6 f-stop.

The USM focus motor is very quiet but the inner movement is a little clunky. The image stabilization works beautifully as well - check out the attached moon photo I shot handheld at ISO 400, 1/400 sec @ f/8.

Remember this isn't an L lens and doesn't have the L lens price tag. I've read other reviews giving it poor marks when comparing to much more expensive lenses, which is unfair. For the price, this is a very fine lens.

In all, if you're looking for a good quality, sharp tele but don't want to pay a huge amount, this may be the lens for you.

I have some very nice Canon lenses. This is not my favorite and it is rarely used.

While most of my Canon lenses are sharp at the end of their min/max capabilities, this one is SOFT when fully extended to get that 300mm. The loss of sharpness is very visible to me and has frustrated me often. I get better 300m clarity on my teens point and shoot.

To be fair, it is a really decent lens in the mid ranges if you don't have already have one. That is why I wish I could give it a 3.5 rating. I have learned to zoom all the way out then pull back on important shots. If it is something I am sharing ONLY on line (Wunderground, Flickr etc) and print quality is not that important, I will go the full 300mm, reduce and sharpen it in PS.

I would recommend it to: someone who can't afford L Series; someone who doesn't need the full 275-300mm for large quality prints; and to someone who needs it for sports snap shots.

I would not recommend it to: someone who is seeking to look up the nostrils of wildlife from afar; or someone who will be making 11x14 of said wildlife zoomed shots for entry in professional class competitions. Save up and get the L series instead.

Recommended lighter weight zoom lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I primarily shoot wildlife and needed a light weight zoom lens that I could carry with me without breaking my neck. I had tried a friend's 100-400mm and found it to cumbersome to walk around with. This lens paired with my 5D Mark III is just right. I was please with the image quality and the focus speed. If you need a lighter weight zoom lens it's a great bargain for the price.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I have been really happy with this lens so far. I had a non-image stabilized lens before and this one is a great improvement. It isn't as heavy as some of the big IS lenses so is still reasonable to use and carry around.

Quick Focus and Beautiful Optics!!!

By Zo

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I read a lot of reviews before choosing this zoom lens - I would recommend reading the reviews on Ken Rockwell's site as he provides some great comparisons of Canon lenses. If you are looking for a cheaper, high quality zoom lens for general zoom photography then this is a perfect lens for you. The zoom does not go so far as to make it a professional wildlife photography lens, but it is great as an all-rounder.

I have been using the lens for a good few months now.

There are so many pros to the lens:
1. Fast focusing - so so much quicker than I am used to with Canons older 200mm models. I can take shots that are in-focus in the blink of an eye.
2. Stability - auto stabilisation works great.
3. Optics are pretty much perfect, even to the edges
4. Colours are CRISP and BOLD!
5. The lens is lightweight and easy to carry around.

Cons
1. Only goes down to f-stop 4, so not so much light coming in, makes night photography a little darker.
2. Also means no bokeh with this lens.
3. Zoom is not contained in the lens, so it becomes a little too overbalanced for use with a tripod at the longer end.
4. The lens is quite cropped, you won't be getting any wide angle shots with it. It is really only usable if you are at least a good five or ten metres away from your subject.

Nothing to disappoint

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I've had this lens for only a short while but have found it to be more than just satisfactory. The image stabilizer is amazing. Never before have I been able to handhold a telephoto lens without ruining and losing a shot. The finish and feel of the lens seem to be top-grade. It'll be revealing to use this lens for imaging celestial objects, especially star fields.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I am not a professional so I am probably not looking over this lens with a fine tooth comb. Having just used it on a short vacation, it fulfilled my expectations even at full telephoto. I would recommend a tripod when going towards full telephoto. The auto focus work flawlessly at both extremes.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This is not the be-all-and-end-all of telephoto zooms, but it offers a very sound price/performance ratio (at least on an aps-c body). No, it's not as sharp as (some) higher-priced lenses, but it's more than good enough for many situations. It's also lightweight and easy to carry, while still having decently sturdy construction. The biggest downsides are the relatively slow AF, the fact that the focus ring rotates even in AF mode, and that it will creep if you forget to use the zoom lock. But ultimately, if you're aware of its limitations and work within them, it rewards you handsomely, at a very reasonable price.

I have only taken this lens out a couple of times to my kid's soccer games. I was able to many great action shots of him kicking the ball and running. The image stabilization works very well, although it chews up the battery. All around a great lens for taking pictures at family sporting events.
