Bought this for my new Nikon 200-500mm. Works great! Thirty seconds to mount and balance the camera and lens. Take two fingers to move in any direction. Smooth as butter. Used it all day birding and it's a joy.

Quality product with Caveats

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Heavy duty, sturdy, high quality and easy to use, but weighs more than I had anticipated. Spend an extra day each week in the weight room at the gym and you will be fine. Range of motion on directly overhead shooting is restricted by the equipment. In order to shoot directly overhead I needed to sit on the ground and lower one leg of my tripod. I dont have experience with other Wimberely type devices so my suggestion is to speak with a B&H rep for better information.

Absolutely the best

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

I'm primarily a bird photographer and having suffered through several years with a $99 knock off I can say this is truly the standard if you're looking for top quality construction and controllable camera movement. Until some other concept comes along this is worth the high price (you get what you pay for).

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

My hobby (passion) is wildlife photography and the WH-200 Gimbal Head II with quick release base has made my photography so much easier! After reading many reviews on Gimbal Heads and watching youtube videos, I decided to pay the price and get the Wimberley . Best choice ever! So easy to put on my tripod and it works like a charm. I have heavy long lenses and the Gimbal Head makes is a breeze to use them. The fluid head makes for seamless motion and it is a quality built piece of photography equipment. A little heavy but worth every penny you pay for it. Love the quick release base and go ahead and purchase the Wimberley P10 Quick Release Plate, you want regret it!

Wish I had bought it sooner!

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

I use this for wildlife photography...and now... for any kind of photography. It is very "arthritis friendly" for my hands and much easier to use than my ballhead. Before I could not tighten the ballhead tight enough to prevent creeping even with only a 400mm. But the wimberley soft knobs barely need to turn to tighten sufficiently and easily un-tightens too. Its fast, and responds to precision angles. Love it!

I purchased the SIDEKICK prior to the WH-200 Tripod Head, and I still use it as a backup, however, This product is now permanently on one of my Tripods. Best purchase ever, I cannot believe I waited this long to get it. I checked many sources and plowed thru many youtube videos before ordering it and Im very happy I finally did. Its Strong, Very strong, well built yet simple to use, Super smooth operation.

One thing better than Really Right Stuff head

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Most all my Support equipment is RRS gear, I think the Wimberley Gimbal product patent keeps them from making as good a Gimbal as this one. Asthetics, knob pacement, functionality all work great. I hang a Canon 400mm 2.8 w/ extenders, and it works like a dream

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Perfect for birding. Once the camera and lens are balanced, you can just point the lens in any orientation and it just stays where you point it. Very stable, no movement whatsoever once it is set. Well worth the extra money over less expensive options.

Flawless design!!!!!

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Like so many people, I didn't want to spend the money for this Tripod Head. So I bought three different heads hoping they would perform as well as their reviews. In hindsight, I should of saved that money and bought the best! It's no wonder people sing praises about this tripod head! It spins so easily vertically and horizontally, locks into place when needed, a flash bracket can be attached if your shooting in low light and need a flash. So easy to assemble, not too heavy. What's not to love...except the price:)

Bought Used - Looks and Feels New

By Joseph

from Washington, DC

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

I bought this used for $130 less than retail price. Let me say how massive this thing is. It is 9 inches by 9 inches and it is a solid metal piece that feels lighter than you think it should be. I bought this used and it looks and feels brand new. The base is easy to screw on to a tripod head and the dials move with ease. it was a cinch to clip my 70-200 VRII lens to the plate and it looks small compared to this gimbal head. I have the intention of later buying bigger faster teleconverters but could not pass up on this deal for the gimbal head.

Works Well-Easy to set-up and Easy to Use

By North Jersey

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

The control knobs are well positioned and work easily. The design is fairly robust making this well suited for use with a super telephoto lens like the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. We have not had too many opportunities to use this so far, but in the times we have tried it, we are pleased with the product.

Smooth stable tripod head

By Gordon

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Just received my WH200 and took it a local air show. Tracking of 400mph P51s was very smooth and stable with a heavy telephoto. Head works well on birds and wild life. I highly recommend this head.

Pros

  • "Smooth as butter" motion in all directions
  • Perfect solution for large lenses
  • Renders camera and lens "weightless"
  • Superb materials and construction

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Large

Best Uses

  • Wildlife

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Before my Wimberley, I owned a cheapo gimbal that cost 1/3rd the price. There's no comparison between the two. The cheapo one has slop all over and doesn't pan smoothly. The Wimberley is consistently smooth and solid. "You get what you pay for" is true here.

This gimbal is a superb product. Nice materials, precision construction. Every motion is smooth - you forget you're using it. The rubber knobs are easy to use, even wearing thick gloves in cold weather.

The Wimberley is perfect for my 500 f/4 lens, but the trade-off for this amazing support is that it's large and heavy.

I use this mostly for wildlife, where it has good freedom of movement. But for serious action, such as fast flying birds, I prefer to handhold my camera. It also locks super tight so it's great for static shots such as moon photography or telephoto landscapes.

If the tripod isn't level, the camera will be tilted, and it will rotate as you pan the gimbal. Therefore I loosen the lens collar lock so I can manually level the camera as I am panning and composing.

Be aware that different lens, camera, and accessory combinations will require re-balancing!

I would recommend an RRS lever-release cradle clamp to replace the wimberley screw knob clamp. Five seconds less time per mount or dismount is HUGE when wildlife action is happening!

Be careful in windy conditions. If the gimbal knobs are loose and you're not paying attention, your gear can spin around.

Also be sure to lock both knobs before picking up the entire support rig with camera attached.

Buy the highest quality, beefiest tripod you can afford. (I use the Gitzo Systematic 4542LS). Don't skimp on support and end up with toppled and broken gear or unstable shooting conditions.

Overall I would highly recommend the Wimberley if you need a gimbal head. I have never regretted buying it, and would obtain another in a heartbeat if something bad happened to my current one.
