Good value for the price, but...

They do everything they advertise. Use them with the blackcover on for reflected light, or remove the cover, turn themaround, and use them as quasi-softboxes.Light, easy to store.

Problems Encountered: I bent 2 stretchers on each of 2 umbrellas when theunextended stands fell over with the umbrella and a NikonSB600 mounted on each. The stretchers seem particularlyweek. (Stretchers are the metal pieces that extend from thecenter to the ribs. Ribs are the metal pieces that the clothfits over.)The good news is an FCO repair is easy. Cut some coat hangerwire a little bit shorter than the stretcher, slide it intothe channel that runs the length of the stretcher on thecloth side (it fits nicely, and gaffer tape it into place. Ireinforced all 8 stretchers in 5-10 minutes. The white tapemakes the fix practically invisible.I'd be upset over it except, at the price, I couldn't expectbullet-proof strength.

Items I Recommend: coat hangers, gaffer tape.

After removing the black backing I became very upset. It seems the black material has bled onto the white interior. There are scuffs all over the white it looks as if it is a piece of gear I have had for years or that it had a bad run in with some black asphalt. I am very disappointed. I ordered this because of Scott Kelby's blog I am disappointed he recommended such a sub par product. Save yourself some hassle and go with Wescott.

Not for those who are looking for a sturdy embrella.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

I knew the Impact brand wasn't designed for serious amateurs, and certainly not professionals. However, I was only looking for a flash modifier to improve desktop shots, eBay listing photos, etc. With that understanding, a buyer shouldn't be too disappointed with this umbrella.

When I pulled mine out of the bag, the black cover was disconnected at one point. The thread that tied it to the little metal cap had broken. A little work with needle and thread, and it's okay for gentle use again.

The umbrella shaft is made from very thin material, so I wrapped it in aluminum tape before putting it in the light stand bracket. Otherwise, it won't take much to crush the shaft when the set screw is tightened.

It is a reflector and shoot through in one. For the price they seem to be made well. I'll be buying two more so I have two shoot throughs and two reflective.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

It looks a bit fragile but it's working well by now, you have to handle gently it's not for heavy use, considering that is a great purchase for a low price

Nice photo umbrella

By Multimedia is where it's at.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

I am writing this review because of some negative reviews I read about this product. In general Impact is a reliable brand that is a little bit cheaper than the competitors. My umbrella came clean and unstained. I purchased this one because I had been borrowing one for years. It feels like most umbrellas you would buy today, lightweight and sturdy once opened. But the point I'm trying to make is that you can't be rough with lighting gear ... ever. Treat it well and it will last, treat it like every other umbrella you have (toss it around and open and close it as fast as you can) and it probably won't last very long.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

Came as an extra in a kit with the 100 watt monolight and stand. The umbrella itself works well enough and does what it's supposed to do. However, it was put together incorrectly. Not sure what to call it, but the little notch that is supposed to catch the release lever (that holds the umbrella open) is not lined up properly. In order to have the umbrella stay open, I have to push it open further (past the notch) which puts added strain on the arms and the fabric. Used sparingly over the few years I've had it, but has always delivered the desired result. Just wish quality control was better over at Impact. Can't complain too much for the price. Just be careful with it.

Great umbrella, good in tight spaces

    By Niles

    from Pennsylvania

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

Considering the span of the umbrella, it works well in a small home studio like the one I use. I own a few impact products and this one is on par with quality, reliability and not being outrageously overpriced. Definitely recommend this.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

This isn't the best umbrella out there. It is far from the worst of the lot. The value in terms of bang for the buck is there. I have several Impact umbrellas and some higher quality ones as well. I do notice a bit of color shift with the Impact umbrellas but that is easily corrected in post. And when one of these gets destroyed I didn't just lose a >$ umbrella.
