I wanted to buy a larger umbrella to experiment with different types of lighting modifiers and found that the Impact 60" black/white umbrella is a gem. Sure you can spend more on other brands and for the most part they will be better built but in function and type of light the impact 60" umbrella will do the same job for less.

I use it for group shots with a monolight reflecting from the inside of the umbrella as well as close ups with the black cover off and shooting thru with a speedlight or monolight. It really is a very versatile light modifier, just as Zack Arias pointed out.

60" Convertible Umbrella - Love it!

Love the size of this umbrella and the fact that it has a removable black backing. Wish I could give it 3.5 star rating.

It's fairly easy to use out of the box, but you'll want to get some practice in removing the backing and putting it back on. Just to get things to line up properly. Don't let this be a discouragement, it's easier than assembling a softbox.

I recommend this product. I wish a 7' foot was available, that would be my next purchase.

Not so greats.... As with any umbrella, or any lighting for that matter, use sand bags on your light stands. A strong wind and your stand will fall over. This actually happened to me, bent one of the bars on the umbrella, was able to bend it back with a pair of needle nose. Tried this on another brand and it snapped. Was happy that things went back into place with no problem.

If I were to manufacture umbrellas, I'd use a little tougher support steel to protect from this happening. However This is a problem with any brands that I've come across, and for the money it is worth it.

Enjoy!

Very nice soft light. Also you can close it half way to give a soft box type of light.

Great Value

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

I bought four of these umbrellas for a photo shoot and I am very happy with my purchase. The umbrellas are color accurate, not showing any apparent color shift. While the umbrella may not be as sturdy as some of the more expensive brands, it should be plenty durable for indoor use. I have only used them as a bounce umbrella so I can not say how well they work as a shoot through. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and I will consider buying them again in the future.

Extremely versatile light modifier

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

Purchased this umbrella after watching Zack Arias's One Light video. While I already had smaller umbrellas, this 60" throws a larger softer light from a speed light or strobe. It's especially useful for group shots but great for individual portraits as well. Remove the black cover and use it as a shoot through to get near soft box quality light. This belongs in every photographers stable of light modifiers whether Pro or Amateur. There may be better built or more durable umbrellas out there but for the price this Impact is hard to beat. #sweepstakes

Really good value for money

By ERO

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

60" is large - stating the obvious, but you need to have a specific need for this size, otherwise your light spread will be large, and you need a more powerful strobe to make full use of the size - 500W is a realistic minimum, or your light spread will be uneven. You lose a lot of light bouncing into this size. 60" is a really good size for full length portraits or larger studio subjects.

The inside of the umbrella is a medium-sheen reflective white; the reverse of the inside (i.e. the outside) is plain white, so if you bounce with the black cover on, you'll have a crisper, controlled light, but not so much as with a silvered inside. If you fire through, it'll be more diffuse, but this is no substitute for a soft box. You'll have a hot spot unless you use a secondary diffuser. The removable cover is black. There is no facility for reversing the satin reflective interior for the plain white

Quality is OK for occasional studio use, but it's probably not up to frequent use. The umbrella material is actually very good, but the frame is a bit flimsy - still, excellent value for the money. Wouldn't recommend for outside use because of the size and the flimsy frame unless there's no wind.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

I tried this umbrella on my Elinchrom and Profoto lights, and I'm loving it. It does a nice job when shooting in studio or on location. It's easy to carry, light. It's slightly longer than my tripod bag, but that's ok. So between this 60" umbrella and a smaller version of it, I'm good to go. So far, so good.

The umbrella is a great source of light for photography not to mention that the convertible usage gives you a different types of soft light and the size is just about right.. The only thing I didn't love is that it took a while to get (apparently because they weren't in stock), but other than that, GREAT product.
