I ordered this because I wanted a cheap portable kit that would be easy to transport and use on short notice.

What I got was a great portable kit for a very reasonable price. The stands come with standard studs so they can be used to mount other items and actually go higher than 10 feet. They are also very sturdy and stable. The cross bar is in four 3 foot'ish long sections that take seconds to assemble. You can use 2, 3 or 4 sections to make a length that matches your backdrop accordingly. The holes at the ends of the cross bar are elongated more than enough to allow the height of each stand to be changed a considerable amount without binding the cross bar at the opposite stand. With my old system this was a huge issue. The included carrying bag is also very nice. Each of the stands and cross bar sections have their own pockets so nothing rubs together. A very nice feature for picky people like me that don't want things damaged during storage or transportation.

This little "cheap" kit will be replacing my current system.

I bought this background stand for an event I shot where I needed to use a muslin background. This kit is complete with everything you need to use it to support cloth or paper backgrounds (2 stands, expandable crossbar & even a nice bag to store it all in).

Upon setting it up I realized that is was definitely not designed as a heavy duty system. The stands are thin, although light in weight, metal. The top-most extension of the stands is so thin I wondered how it would be able to support the combined weight of the crossbar and the 10x20 muslin I was going to use. I had it set up for a total of five hours and when I took it down I discovered the top-most extensions had bent from the weight of the muslin. I then had trouble getting them to nest back inside the lower sections of the stands.

I would have returned the kit to B&H, but I was outside their 15-day window for returns. Had I to do it over again, I would have bought some quality heavy-duty light stands and the Bogen extension pole (#2983) which I suspect is a much stronger piece than the one in the Impact kit. I priced out the pieces I had in mind and two lights stands with the Bogen crossbar was only $60 more (albeit with no bag).

My mistake. Always buy the best and only cry once. A bargain isn't always a bargain, especially in the case of this kit. One positive note though, the bag that is supplied with the kit is a great design and holds all the pieces securely making it easy to transport to locations outside the studio.

Great support system for the price

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

Purchased to use as a travel backdrop system for trade show photography and also models on site. Assembly was very straightforward and it comes with a very nice case. The portable supports we have purchased in the past have been very flimsy or unstable, this one is neither.

Poles stuck - now unusable

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

Two of the poles in this system have become permanently lodged together, rendering the entire thing unusable. We can't break it down, which means it can't be transported, so it's useless. Biggest waste of money ever. Terribly flawed design.

This works fine, sets up easy. But it is not strong enough for heavy rolls of paper.

Good, large support that packs small

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

For the price, this is a good background support system.

Likes: It collapses down to a much shorter package than my traditional support.
It can be set up to accommodate "head shot" width backgrounds.
It comes with a travel bag -- very handy.

I am wondering how durable it will be. Although we take care of our equipment, only time will tell how it will hold up over time.

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

Well worth the money, I got it in the deal zone along with the 10x12 muslin background. Light to carry, nice carry bag and easy to set up. Stands are pretty tall too. Only thing is the stand locks are hard for my girly fingers to turn. Overall happy and would recommend this product.

To lightweight for its own good

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

I do photography for a major division at  large university and bought these stands do do portraits across campus.  Barely a month after the one year warranty had expired, and after only 12 -15 setups, one of the stands has the bottom section stuck in the base and the upper section that the clamp is stripped out.  Several other clamps feel like they are on the verge of stripping.  The spigot tops are both stripped as well.  This isn't from abuse or over tightening.  I have light stands from impact that are the same age and they are fine.  I just wouldn't recommend this kit unless you are going to leave it setup in one position.

Not good for heavy use

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

Don't buy this setup if you're planning on extending the stands to their full height. The top portion of the stands are thin and make the whole thing wobbly. No matter how hard I tighten the sections, I've had it collapse on itself multiple times - bringing the whole background down and scaring my clients. Not exactly professional. One of the screws/knobs you use to tighten the bottom portion of the stand also broke on one of mine.

If you only need a basic system for holding a fabric backdrop, or 9ft wide paper for headshots etc, this will be fine. If you need the full height and paper across the floor, find something more stable.

Poor design on stands and crossbar

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

The stands are just okay and as you really have to crank down on the knobs to get them fully locked or it drops down.  You get the feeling your going to snap something with how hard you have to lock them.

The first year the cross bar was fine, the second year the locking inserts started to loosen and now they loosened so much that I couldn't get 2 of the sections apart as the insert just spins around.  I ended up drilling through the pipe and inserting a screw to hold each insert in place on each section.  A clear design flaw and something the manufacturer should be doing.

Impact customer service wasn't very helpful and wouldn't admit they have a design flaw. Said I would have to buy a new crossbar set.

No base pole and light weight poles

By Jeremy

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

This system is very easy to set up and is portable in the supplied bag. The problem is, to get the green screen cloth to remove ripples you need to use clamps and not have a base pole at the bottom does not allow you to stretch it and remove all the wrinkles. It doesn't take much to make this thing fall over on its own either.

It only does its job although there are better

By Carlos

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

I am not satisfied with this purchase sincerely the materials with which they are made the ligthstand are of poor quality they feel weak and the specifications of purchase says "2 heavy-duty professional support stands" but they are not heavy duty they dance to them ascending, I have Others of similar prices and those really feel strong and secure. This system has plastic parts that feel poor quality, feel porous.
Although I am not satisfied with my purchase, it honestly does its job.
I would simply recommend looking for another option especially if you put vinyl or similar backgrounds with a little more weight.

The best thing about this package is the transport bag really looks indestructible.

Compact kit, very quick to assemble.

Comments about Impact Background Support System - 12' Wide:

Compact kit in convenient carry bag. Bag's velcro closure straps won't really keep it together, small loops should have been sewn in, which is pretty much standard elsewhere. Just a little too long to fit into a 38" lighting case (max size for airlines without excess baggage charges), but otherwise fine. I've only used it with 53" wide seamless rolls, requiring just two of the four cross bar segments. I'm not sure how stable it would be at maximum width, but since the weight of a long paper roll would be evenly distributed across the entire bar it would probably be fine with sandbags for stability.

The top of the stands have spikes over which the crossbar rests, but these can be unscrewed and stored in a pocket of the bag, allowing you to use them as conventional light stands. I wouldn't put a monoblock on them, but a portable flash or pack/head system would be fine as long as the mods aren't too heavy.
