Ken Rockwell says: "Nikon's 70-300mm VR is the best compromise for size, weight, range and image quality". Most evaluations of this lens, will say it is not that sharp at 300mm. I use mine at 300mm more than any other focal length! The best advice is to make sure you use a tripod at this focal length. The VR can be on when used on a tripod with NO problems. The best F stops (for me) are between F /7.1 and F/11. The enclosed images were taken at Brookfield Zoo near Chicago. Both images were cropped and sharpened with the high-pass filter in Adobe Photoshop. The photograph of the Eagle was taken hand held.

I bought this lens along with Tamron's new 70-300mm VC for more reach to shoot birds and other wildlife after hearing such good things about it. I shot test charts with a tripod at various apertures and focal lengths and also took both lenses into the field. I fully expected the Nikon to be better. But I was wrong. It was noticeably softer than the Tamron especially at the longer focal lengths. The difference was so obvious (even at 33%, much less 100%) that I wondered whether I just got a bad lens so I got another new Nikon and repeated the tests. Same result. I had expected some softness, but not this much. All of my other lenses are Nikon so I really hesitated, but in the end I returned both of the Nikons and have been incredibly pleased with the Tamron since.

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

I have used this mostly outdoors. This is an out door lens. It will do a great range of close up; but the cost is light gathered. Hence why it is an outdoor lens. Tip: ISO 400-640 might be needed. I have taken some great deer shots with this lens. Can't wait to get some of Mount Saint Helens.

Horrible iron facing in the lens though. Much of the depth is removed. It li like a pancake. The Angry Photographer has it right with the iron facing review. It really is flat. But to be expected. Look at all the glass in the lens. The 300 Prime would most likely be the one you need, if: 1) you an afford it. 2) you have a need for it.

Look, I'm not saying do not buy this lens. I'm not saying it is a bad lens. You just need to be very aware with it's short comings.

I emailed B&H for a recommendation, and I am really glad I went with it. This lens has proven adept at soccer field shots and did better than I hoped in a basketball gym. The VR really helps!

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

Nice zoom range for sports. Fast enough. This lens could easily be used for portraiture but I have other Nikkors for that. Reasonable price, good quality. I'd buy it again and... I'd recommend its purchase to anyone considering a zoom with this range.

This lens is the perfect complement to the Nikon d750 24-120mm f4 G ED N bundle lens. Although I have only taken a few shots with it, the typical Nikon quality is apparent, and I look forward to many years of high quality photos.

      Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

This lens is on my camera 80% of the time. I use it for bird, insect, portraits, sports, airplanes, and even some landscapes when you want to narrow your shot to something specific. I was hesitant whether or not to buy this, but what pushed me was Moose Peterson, who has the best of everything uses it and did a video on it highly recommending it. Normally these pro endorsements don't mean much to me but this one did for whatever reason. I am glad I took a chance on it. It is tack sharp at all ranges, even 300mm and even wide open. Stop it down to f8 and it is crazy sharp. I can not recommend this it enough. If it got stolen I would replace it in a minute. Best lens I own. It is really good for birds in flight. You can't go wrong with it.

          Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

Well, it's a NIKON product! and I've always have used, NIKON since 1965, and it has always been an excellent product, but since the technology gets increasingly complicated, I use this lens on 2 occasions, in the first, I took 28 shots and at the second, barely reach taking 12 images and the autofocus stopped working, as well as the manual, in the plus side, this lens is clear and sharp and it gives me a great facility to frame the object that I want, without having to move forward or backward to much, the only drawback is that you can get too close to the subject, you have to keep at least 5-6 feet from it, mostly, good lens and hope that after the repair, it does not break again.

I use this zoom for just about everything. From macro like butterflies and bugs, to birds, great for birds in flight, and wildlife for portraits on the short end. Great for long range candids at family picnics. This is on my camera 75% of the time. Best money I have spent of camera gear. Some had said it is not sharp beyond 200mm. Well I have not found that. I have gotten tack sharp images at 300mm wide open at F5.6 consistently. The VR works great. I have shot at 1/60th of a second at 300mm and gotten tack sharp images. If this was lost or stolen I would replace it in a heartbeat.

I know this lens gets a ton of rave reviews from photographers, and maybe my problem is comparing it to a 70-200 2.8 VRII. I think this lens is fantastic for video, but I'm not quite as impressed for stills. It's pretty decent and especially considering the discount when purchasing it with the D810, I have no regrets. I already see I will be doing more video with the D810 than expected, so I imagine this lens will come in handy.

                  Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

Bought this lens with the Nikon D750 to fulfil a need for telephoto shooting. The lens is fairly long but not too wide, although the lens hood is long. One thing to note: The barrel extends, so it is possible to get stuff like dust stuck inside of the barrel, especially if the rear cap is not on it when it isn't attached to the camera.

The physical characteristics are typical for this type of lens, but my comments will center mainly on the performance.

At 70mm, the lens is fairly sharp. As you zoom in, it gets less sharp. At 200mm it is acceptable, but as soon as you hit the 300mm range, the sharpness falls quite a bit.

If you desire sharpness at maximum zoom ranges, I would think twice about this lens. If you just need something that hits the 300mm range without breaking the bank, then this lens will do fine. It really depends on your budget and what you expect out of it. You get what you pay for.

                    Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

The 70-300mm is cheap and offers a good zoom range, and is still small and lightweight.

The lens is pretty good at 70mm, especially in the center. As you go longer things go bad, but the image is still ok at 200mm. After that things go bad fast, with 300mm images being very soft. I checked if it was a focusing issue using live view and it was not.

I decided to cash out the extra money an go for something better: the Nikon 70-200mm f/4.

                        Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

Bought this lens to accomplish a greater reach when photographing wildlife. I use it on a DX camera and am impressed with the clear detail at full zoom. I made a great choice.

                        Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens:

An ultralight lens, this stays on my camera when I am out for some sports or getting some birds into the frame, although this lens does exceedingly well in any situation. Its VR works very well, helping stop down the lens and play with a little low light (although don't stretch that too far).

Great buy and inclusion to my kit.

I use this to take pictures of local wildlife here in my area. It's decent enough for the price I paid. At maximum zoom there is some blurry angles. Slightly heavier than my Nikkor 18-200 but it does not matter for me since I love using it!
