If you are looking at this lens you are looking at the perfect alternative to the 70-200mm 2.8 for half the price. Note: if you shoot or plan to shoot a lot and I mean a lot of low light work then stop here and go buy the 2.8 version. Marking this lens down and comparing it to that lens is insane; buy that lens and mark it down. Two different products!
For those of you not making 2.8 money and shoot a wider range of light, not a whole lot of low light work, or you own a flash and know how to control it, you will be very happy with this lens. Believe me when I say I wanted the 2.8 version however; like most semi-pro photographers money is limited and I wanted to eat and have a roof over my head for the next few months while getting the shots I need.
I needed the reach and performance of that 2.8 without the price and this lens is it. This lens is smaller and lighter than the 2.8 which makes it nice to carry around all day especially if you are a location type photographer. It fits in my sling bag mounted to the camera (barely) keeping my load light. The lens performs excellent on my 40D and yes the IS does talk to you however; you begin to use the sound when focusing on the fly. Image quality is amazing, it made me wish I had purchased this lens sooner and I have no regrets not buying the 2.8 version. The colors come out amazing and the CA coating reduces noise seen from cropped sensor cameras . Sports Photographers will not be disappointed, I was able to shoot paraglider's from a cliff the other day and the color and sharpness at 200mm F/4 w/o a UV filter or tripod is amazing. Post processing was minimal in Lr and the prints were ready in no time. In addition, I have used this lens indoors with one 430EXII flash mounted on an umbrella combined with natural light and the shots came out just as good as being outside.
The lens comes with a hood, lens bag/pouch ( I don't like it) and no tripod ring. At first, I thought I needed that ring however; I would say it depends on what you are shooting and the size of your camera. I have the 40D with the battery pack bottom and the camera feels well balanced when this lens is mounted. I imagine if you did not have the battery pack it would feel a bit more front heavy but still manageable. If you own a smaller camera or will be shooting a lot in one day then consider the tripod ring. I was able to mount my camera using the stock camera mount with lens looking straight down and the tripod did not flip over so, I still do not need the ring. This lens is compatible with the Canon EF Extenders 2x and 4x along with the EF25II and EF12II Extension tubes. I have used it with the EF25II Extension tube and the zoom capability and image quality for macro work is amazing. You can shoot bugs at a nice distance without disturbing them and still get that close up detail. The lens comes with a manual explaining the F-stop loss using the Extenders 2x and 4x. Overall, the F-Stop loss is too great for me when starting at F/4 however; that depends on what you are shooting and the availability of light.
I did not buy this lens at B&H, I was able to buy it in new condition from another photographer who barely used it in her work flow and put it in a closet for 8-9 months. That is why I suggest taking a serious assessment of your current work flow before buying any lens. It is a lot of money to just put in a closet for 8-9months. I use this lens constantly know that I have it and I only take it off for wide angle shots. I hope this helps, I wanted to keep it short yet provide you with information that would help you make the best choice when buying this lens.

There is a major manufacturing defect with this lense
You can not focus this lens manually if you point it up at more than 45 degrees.
I've tried several of these lenses and have had the same bad results.
Canon WILL NOT take responsibility for it if you don't notice it within your warranty period.
Double check you lense for this issue and return it!!!
Canon does not consider it a manufacturing flaw , even though it obviosly is.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Very happy with this lens, I traded my EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS for this lens. The 2.8 was a great lens but the f4 is half the weight, smaller, and easier to hand hold. Great for landscapes, stills, and portraits. Unless you need to stop action in low light, get this lens and save over the 2.8 version.

Only f4, however sharp as a tack with great IS

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have only had this for only two weeks, but it has exceeded my expectations after doing a lot of research. It serves dual purpose on both my Canon 7D (original) crop sensor and the 5D Mark IV full frame sensor. Sharpness is unbelievable, as well as fast, quiet, and repeatable right-on auto focus. I don't shoot weddings, but do shoot indoor art gatherings which are typically held in low light venues. Image stabilization if so helpful, especially on the crop sensor camera. Great value!

Great lens - lighter than 2.8

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Of course - the 2.8L 70-200mm is superior in low light - but it's at a cost of about twice the weight as this lens. I use this lens for video with my FS5 and FS7 with a metabones speedbooster (which helps to curb the F4 up a stop).

Comes along with me on all my trips and absolutely necessary for those sweet telephoto shots.

Read all the reviews before buying this L lens. I got it the next day after I ordered it on line (Thanks B&H). Tested it right away & the images are super sharp & clean. I'm so happy with the lens & B&H. My only gripe is with canon because I couldn't register for my warranty on line because their site is not secure. Thanks reviewers!

A great lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

It has great optics at almost half the price and weight of the f/2.8 version. At f/4, it is fast enough for most things and a lot easier to haul around. Except for the times that I really need the extra speed, this lens delivers great images and is kinder to my aging back.

Great all around lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Great for catching action or head shots, this lens can adapt to many purposes. The f4 aperture is consistent throughout the zoom range and allows for some nice shallow depth of field shooting. Image stabilization really helps but I opt to put it on a monopod for extended period of time.

As expected

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I bought the lens to be lighter and tripod free and support my proven needs set by my old 2.8 non image stabilization version. I got what I expected with no loss in image quality that I can detect. Subjectively, some images seem marginally sharper and with more contrast.

Peeve - Whatever happened to the factory sealed box?

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

First, I'd like to thank B&H Photo for another flawless transaction.

They ship fast, package well, and great customer service.

This lens, although not the 2.8ii, is still very sharp. It's not too heavy, and feels good in you hands.

I haven't used it a whole lot since I purchased it a couple of weeks ago, but so far I'm impressed with the image quality and build quality of this lens.

Even though the aperture is only goes to f/4, it still creates very nice boken and crispy focused objects.

I shoot on a Canon 6D full frame and it produces amazing images.

I'm using this to shoot video, and with a lens this long the optical image stabilization is crucial to keep my shots from being too shaky.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I did not have the money for the f/2.8, so I chose this f/4. I am thrilled because it is so lightweight in comparison. I have handheld and taken some excellent shots of flying ducks, birds, and other moving animals. I am pleased with the sharpness. I only wish I had bought it sooner.

Focusing makes some noise, but not bad. I use this with my Canon 7D. Can't wait to do some portraits with it!
