I was looking for something inexpensive as a temporary wide zoom lens for my D2X and I bought this one.
Surprisingly it is very sharp something you don't expect from a 100 dollars lens.
Focus is not super fast but it is fast enough for me.
I'm just very happy with it.
No softness at any focal point.
Love it.

This lens came in my D70 kit. The optics were surprisingly good for a kit lens, exceeded my expectations time and time again. In fact, it was one of my best lenses yet (says a lot, considering others are Japanese built straight 2.8 Nikkors) on my D70 -- until it fell apart.

I am VERY careful with my equipment but apparently exceeded the usage limit for this lens. Repeated zooming eventually caused something in the housing to give way, leading to the zoom mechanism getting jammed and eventually causing the rear element to FALL OUT!

Not sure if this was just a defective lens or not,
conflicted on whether or not to purchase it again. Optics are excellent, durability is questionable.

Cheap and light weight

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens:

Pro: Cheap lens and light weight.
Con: Slightly blurry image because of lack of VR (Vibration Reduction). I would spend extra $100 just to get VR lens so your image would be sharp focus. When your finger press the shutter button (ever camera is on tripod), you already create a slight movement on the camera so the image comes out slightly blurry. VR lens will help reduce that issue.

Still can't believe how fast...

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens:

After my local camera store dropped the ball on ordering in this lens for my sons christmas gift I though he was just going to miss out... Then a friend of mine told me to check B&H so I did. Not only did they have it but they had it at a better price. That part made sense to me, big box store lower prices but I never imagined I could get it in California the following day. So just to check I picked up the phone to call B&H and I was greeted by a live representative who said it would not be a problem to get it to me the next day and so within 5 min I had purchased the lens and was relieved. That is still all great but it was still winter and there were some big storms happening around the country so I figured oh well at least it will be here shortly after Christmas instead of not at all. Until it was on my porch the next evening waiting for me... Thanks B&H!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens:

Pro: Sharp lens.

Con: more plastic than I prefer which may compromise ruggedness. 30 years ago, even the inexpensive nikon lenses seemed to have more metal (ie series E). If you are going pro or semi, weight shouldn't matter as much.

Con: barrel distortion on wide focal length. Can be corrected in post with most photo software. Inconvenience but not a deal breaker.

Con: manual focus ring not very rigid. Hopefully will last as long as prime lenses I still have after 30 years.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens:

Very good lens from Nikkor. I purchased this as a replacement lens and it has been working flawlessly. Although, it doesn't feel as solid as my earlier 18-55mm, and this model doesn't include vibration reduction which would be nice to have. All in all a solid product which can still be improved.

For what I am using it for and for what it costs, it's perfect for me. I converted my D7100 to color infrared and needed a good inexpensive kit lens. This fits the bill very well.

This is the lens most often on my camera body. If I had the bucks I'd buy several prime lenses but in the meantime, this is a good solid lens for most pro-am general work.

Got this to replace an earlier version of this lens that had broken. It is on a early style DSLR Body so I was concerned about compatibility but was assured by Customer service that this lens would work with my camera body and it did. So good to have this lens back in my arsenal.

I bought this for my girlfriend to use with her D3200 and it's been great. For an inexpensive, standard zoom lens, this thing really gets the job done. I don't know that there's any real downside to having this, unless you're trying to take some quality closeup shots from a longer distance. Worth the money!
