Had bought Canon's 10-22mm lens months ago when all I had was a 7D and loved it. So when I bought the 5D MkII it only made sense to get this one. I now own several L lenses and now wish they had have made the 10-22mm an f/2.8 and an L as well. Of all of them, this is the one that truly is most practical. The FOV makes for very interesting UWA pictures and yet when zoomed in to 35 can yield classic frames literally free from any significant distortion. From Landscapes, to portraits, to even street photography this lens comes through. If you are on a budget and had but one lens to buy then this would be the lens I would recommend.

Lens will only achieve consistent focus mounted on a tripod. Handheld, it is completely unreliable at any focal length/ F-stop/ Shutter 1/250 +. I've taken it to Canon, documenting the problem and noting that it clunks when gently shaken, as though an internal element is loose. They returned it claiming it's within specs. It's going back a second time on Monday for the same issues. I've used it on 3 different 7D bodies over the last month and a half with the same results on all 3. With all of the positive reviews, I can only figure that I'm stuck with a bad copy. (Purchased when a rebate was offered, tested it on a tripod when I recieved it then put it away until after racing season started.)I'm only writing this to remind people to test thoroughly and return promptly if there is an issue, no matter how many flawless experiences you've had with prior purchases. Hopefully Canon will be a little more thorough on this next service call.

Nice rectilinear super wide angle lens

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

For my style of photography, this is more of a specialty lens on my full frame camera. Definitely worth having in my kit, but not a lens I'd reach for for event shooting, portraiture or wedding work. However, it's a great for capturing the wholeness of a scene or the size of a crowd. Artistically, it makes a nice pet portrait lens as long as you're lower than the subject. It does a great job at helping to keep lines straight when zoomed out.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I shoot a lot of short films, music videos, and documentaries. And this lens is just amazing! With its constant f/2.8 aperture and very well made glass, it is as sharp as ever and I've been using this non-stop ever since I've gotten it!

Canon EF 16-35 f2.8L II

By Shane

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This is my third copy of this lens. Drowned one in Hawaii shooting Turtles on a 5DII. Second one was recently stolen with my 6D. I shoot about 45 to 50 weddings a year as well as family, sport and other general photography, so I could not be without this lens for long. I hear rumors of a new version 3 coming, but I could not wait and I am happy with this lens. Sure it is not as sharp as a 35 prime, but it is so versatile. I use it mostly for brides getting ready, church photos, and reception dancing on a 5D3. It is great for landscapes too. Corners can be soft at 2.8, but for what I do I tend to have the subject in the middle, and for landscapes I stop down to f8 mostly and its sharp across the frame.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

We are a professional wedding and event photography company.
This lens allows you to simply go wider, and shoot with less of a light requirement.
It is tack-sharp in any situation, and extremely versatile for all things portrait and landscape related.

This lens is a game changer; if you don't have one, get one

Most expensive lens I own so far but worth it.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

My working lenses for my two 5Ds are the 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4 but there are times when the 16-35 comes in real handy. And those times happen more often than I thought. So far I'm always shooting at 16 so I wonder if I should have got a wide prime but I suspect that a time(s) will come when I will be glad to have the more "normal" 35 end available.

Soft

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I bought this lens for covenience, like all zooms. To cover a range, less weight in the bag, etc. I never expect great things from zooms. If you want true sharps buy a prime. (However, FYI - the canon 70-200 is an outstanding lens.) Sadly, the 16-35 is not. Pretty soft through the range, variable amount of sharpness. Extremely bad chromatic aberration in the corners. But almost okay if you can stop it down past f11.

I started reading the most helpful review, and honestly started thinking maybe I had written that, but forgot ?
But no, just happens that I also came from the 7D and used the 10-22 which I loved.
Then got the 6D, and got this lens to go with it.
I use it for a lot of long exposure, low light stuff, for which it works great !
In fact, it is for sure, my most used lens.
Pretty darn expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for....
In fact, if ever I were to buy two of the same lens, it would definitely be this one. Just could not do without this lens.

Excellent image quality , fast autofocus, care must be taken depending on the autofocus camera I own a 6D and sometimes the picture is not where it should motivated to wide viewing angle lens , as compared to 70-200 where the focus failure by millimeters . it is a great lens , I recommend it with my eyes closed .
