I've been using this backpack for over a year and I've used it on many hikes and trips. It has replaced my Lowepro Rover AWII as my main backpack.

I usually carry my D300, 18-200mm, 70-200mm f/2.8, 3 other lenses, as well as a flash. Even then, I still have room left over for my pano equipment and other neat accessories that I can't seem to be without. For the equipment I typically carry, the Vertex 200 is just the right size.

Interior: As mentioned by a previous poster, there are a lot of pockets and storage areas. All the interior zippers and pockets are constructed so that they won't scratch or damage your equipment. If you've owned other Lowepro backpacks, you will be familiar with the padded dividers that allow a multitude of storage options. Even with my gear, I still have some dividers and pads left over.

Exterior: The harness system is easy to adjust and allows you to distribute the weight of the backpack. The waist belt is very comfortable, and if the pack is adjusted correctly, a lot of the weight is transferred to your hips, instead of having it all be on your shoulders or back. After a long day of walking, I haven't felt discomfort I felt with other backpacks, like my Rover. The various slip-lock loops on the waist belt and sides of the pack allow for many carrying options.

For hiking, the laptop sleeve/area can easily accommodate a water bladder, making your Vertex even more useful.

Now the bad stuff: Like a previous reviewer mentioned, the weight distribution with a laptop, is not very good. The center of mass should be closer to you, which helps with comfort and mobility. If you're also carrying a tripod, the center of mass is even further away, and I often get the sense that I'm being pulled down from the back. I would be concerned if the pack is loaded in that way, and I'm climbing over objects or walking/hiking up an incline. As mentioned in the previous post, having the laptop sleeve be closer to your back like the CompuTrek line of bags, would be an improvement.

Other cons: The high-density padding on the backside of the pack is comfortable, but doesn't allow as much air circulation as I would like. On a long hike, my back would be sweatier than I would like. Also, there are no D-rings on the straps, which I find a little annoying.

One other note: When fully loaded (with laptop), the bag is pretty close to the limit, dimension-wise, for carry ons on most major airlines. If you plan on flying regional or smaller aircraft, this bag might be too big. On my last trip, I carried my laptop in a different bag, to keep my backpack slimmer. I didn't get hassled about it, but it never hurts to be prepared.

The size is good and the suspension system with its straps and waist band and moveable sternum strap are first rate and the best I have found with any backpack camera bag. Unfortunately the rest of the backpack is below average with its design.

I want to be able to store items outside the main compartment that I will need while shooting like a shutter release, filters, lens cleaner, water bottle, etc. and the Vertex 200 is poorly designed to accommodate this. The two side pockets are divided into numerous tiny pockets that are for the most part too small to put anything inside. There are tiny pockets that could only hold a CF or SD card and I keep mine in a wallet so one half of one side is completely wasted for my purposes. Another half of one side has 3x3 pockets with no zipper so anything placed in them can easily slide out. On the opposite side there are mesh pockets but fully a third of the possible space is lost with the poor placement of the zippers.

The side mesh pockets do not have flexibly material at the edges and one pocket was already torn away when I received the new backpack from the dealer. I could not even squeeze a 500ml water bottle into the side pocket.

There is a very large compartment for a large laptop. I don't carry a laptop into the field so this space is completely wasted. I do sometimes carry an iPad but it would be lost inside the large pocket.

On the inside there is a third of the inside storage area that is supposed to be for a filter wallet. Why would anyone want to have to open the main compartement completely to get a filter out and expose all their gear to the elements?

The design also precludes attaching additional straps to carry items on the outside of the bag like a jacket or ground cloth.

Bottom line is that this is a poorly designed backpack with a great shoulder strap and waist belt and a resulting weight that is from 2.75 to 3.5 lbs. heavier than other bags its size.

Great bag, very comfortable, but...

By D Pedro

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Backpack (Black):

I loved walking around NYC with this bag. It's very well made and fits a ton of stuff. The reason I love this bag, is also the reason I don't use it much anymore. The waist straps are massive and work well, but are always in the way. I don't use them all the time, so they flop around like wi ha of death, slapping people in their seats (on planes) and when I set it on a shelf or place it anywhere, the straps are seemingly all over the place. I wish you could remove the straps and put them away, when you don't need them. Similar to the Manfrotto Pro 50 bag. I own the Kata revolver, a manfrotto simple bag, and the Low Pro 15L blue flip side. I am STILL looking for a bag I can love and use for everything. My next trial will be the manfrotto pro 50 and the upcoming Peak Design Everyday Backpack.

I bought this bag in the B and H store and walked all over NYC, NJ and parts of Europe with it. I used to carry the 5d3, 24-70, 70-200, 85L, 100L macro, 35L, 135L, and sometimes a few other L lenses, like the 24-105, 16-35, 8-15 and the 100-400. This bag held most of my gear and flashes and beyond, but again, the straps were all over the place when it in use.

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Backpack (Black):

I recently replaced my equipment after it was stolen 2 years ago after 5 years of use. I opted for the same Vertex 200 AW backpack based on my previous experience with it. It has ample space and provides plenty options for even weight distribution of equipment. The waterproof linings around the zippers is a big plus. The only con for me is the padded waist straps cannot be removed like the Pro-runner. The padded waist straps are seldom used and makes the bag a little on the bulky side. Otherwise still a great product and strongly recommend.

Best Camera Backpack I've Owned

By David

from Seattle, WA & San Diego, CA

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Backpack (Black):

I've owned half a dozen camera backpacks over the years, but I always come back to this one whenever I have to travel on a rugged adventure. I bought this from B&H 6 years ago and it's held up quite well. I've trekked up mountains in the Cascades, done photo shoots along the beaches of Maui with it buried in the sand, and hiked through the Patagonia in blisteringly cold conditions. This bag has never failed to protect my equipment.

Here's an idea of some of the gear I'd pack for a paid commercial photo shoot:
1) Canon 1DX with 24-70 f2.8 v2 attached.
2) Canon 5Dmk3
3) Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS v2
4) Profoto B1 Air Strobe
5) Canon 85mm f1.2 v2
6) Canon 100mm f2.8 IS Macro
7) 15" Macbook Pro Retina
8) 3 spare batteries for the 5Dmk3
9) 2 spare batteries for the 1DX
10) Chargers for cameras and Mac
11) 4 CF and 4 SD cards
12) Filters, cleaning kit, & misc. items
13) Manfrotto 190 Carbon Fiber Tripod
14) Mathews 9' light stand
15) Profoto 2' x 3' softbox.

Yes. All of that can fit in the back, though of course it weighs around 35lbs and flight attendants might question whether you can safely store that in an overhead compartment for international flights. With this bag or even the bigger 300 AW, the real limit to the amount of gear you can fit in here is what you're willing to carry over your shoulders.

Pros:
1) Weather resistant main compartment and laptop zippers really do help keep cold air, moisture and sand from entering the bag.
2) Adjustable shoulder and hip straps enable a proper fit on my 5' 10" 200lbs body.
3) Adjustable straps for carrying tripod (holster is also removable) and for carrying up to 2 light stands at the same time.
4) Outer compartments are great for carrying spare memory cards, filters, batteries – all things that I need to quickly access.
5) When not carrying a laptop, I use that compartment to house a 1.5 L water bladder. The straw can fit neatly in the shoulder strap so it's easy to access.

Cons:
1) Pretty obvious that it's a camera backpack.

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Backpack (Black):

I traded up to the Vertex 200 from a prior LowePro bag. So far, I love the new rig. I carry two DSLR bodies and three or four lenses. It all fits very well. My only complaint is that I cannot fit both bodies in the bag with lenses attached (I keep a 70-200 lens on one of the bodies).

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Backpack (Black):

I purchased this bag with 2 reasons in mind. The first was I needed a larger bag to carry my 5diii and several lens in one bag for travel purposes. This bag is large enough to hold quite a bit of gear and from what I have read it is FAA compliant. I have not flown with it yet so I am just going on what I have read else where.

The second reason for choosing this bag was to fit my sigma 150-600 sport with a gripped 5diii attached. With the hood reversed and large lens cover on this combo fits perfectly with about an inch to spare at the bottom. I recently traveled locally on a vacation with this combo as well as my 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 ii in the bag with plenty of room to spare. The bag gets real heavy real fast however. Even when heavy though it feels good on your back. The waist and chest straps are very nice and help keep the pack from moving while on you.

Build quality seems great so far. The shoulder straps have nice thick padding feel quite sturdy. The zippers are nice and I have had no problems with them so far. The glide locks on the front and sides are somewhat difficult to move. I accidentally pulled the front one off while playing with it and it seems like a real pain to attempt to reattach them. It doesn't bother me since I had no intention of using it anyway but if I had I would be quite annoyed. The tripod carrier is pretty simple and easy to use. I typically attach my tripod to the side but usually just carry it in my hand anyway.

Overall I am impressed with this bag. I rotate through four different bags regularly and this is always my go to for big lenses or lots of gear.

Well built and designed for versatility with plenty of velcro options for cameras, lenses, filters and other equipment including tripods. I particularly like the weather "sealed" zippers for the main and laptop compartments. More than adequate storage for 3+ lenses including my Canon 7d II mounted with a (large) Sigma 150-500mm lens. This is a terrific value for under $! 100 times better than my first choice (since returned) @ half the price but short on everything else except that it has a hard bottom and stood up more easily.

This is a superb bag. These guys are excellent. Expedited shipping is a blessing. I bought this bag a couple of years back also from b&h.

I own a Nikon D3 with an L-bracket (width is 7 inches) which limits my bag options tremendously. The depth of this bag is 6.5 inches, but can accommodate my D3 very well. I love the comfort of it - highly adjustable. Took it over the weekend for a photo shoot in a park for a couple of hours, didn't feel a thing. The padding offers excellent protection.

Very happy - again - with this purchase.

I would recomend this to anyone looking for a good midsize bag you can carry. The only downside is the weight but with the extra padding it is worth it.

The only downside is that it is BIG. It is great for going out on a shoot with everything you might need but is definitely bulky and over kill for casual work.

I bought this bag to replace a Lowepro bag that I had outgrown. With the purchase of a new "Supertelephoto lens" (15 - 500mm), I needed a larger bag. This bag has definitely met my needs. I can carry my camera (Canon 70D), the kit lens, a 300mm zoom, the new 150 - 500mm zoom, my laptop, and all of my ancillary gear without a problem. Although the bag also allows the transport of a tripod, I have not yet tried that. It is comfortable to carry, and fits under the seat on a plane. It appears to be rugged and well-made. If it holds up like my other Lowepro, I will be completely satisfied.

I really did my research on backpacks. I reviewed most of the big companies (Tamrac etc.) I bought a couple and either kept or returned them and none were as good as the Vertex 200. I really struggled with the choice between the 200 and the 300. I wanted a lot of space but I didn't want to look like I was going for a space walk. The Vertex 200 has fit my needs nicely. I can fit two bodies (7D & 5DMk3) plus my lenses (16-35, 24-70, 70-200) and flash with plenty of room for extra toys and accessories. I have walked all over San Francisco with this pack and it is comfortable and durable. It is a little heavy empty but worth the weight considering what I'm carrying around.

Very well made, ample space for camera body or two and multiple lenses. Not too big or too small for average size adult male. Tripod holder works very well even with a full size 7 lb tripod... Kind of a pain to get into the bag if you have the tripod on the rear holder, but there are holders on each side as well. It is a very comfortable when loaded and has good weight distribution; went 4 miles, up and down rugged terrain without any discomfort.I will never buy another brand of backpack. BandH was very quick to deal with a price adjustment issue, I give them my praises.
