This umbrella is a very affordable option for those who need a decent bounce in outdoor or even indoor environments. I enjoy the flexibility of taking off the black cover to use the umbrella as a soft-box with my speedlights. They are super-compact in comparison to the studio rigs, and they are light.

The cons are start with the basic fact that the lightness comes at a cost to durability. The steel shaft bends a bit too easily as I found out on when a gust of wind almost sent my 'brella crashing to the cement. I thought I was lucky to have caught it before it hit the ground, but quickly learned that by grabbing for the umbrella instead of the stand, I had inadvertantly bent the shaft, and so the 'compactness' was compromised.

Other than that, it offers a nice quick and easy solution for setting up headshots, bodyshots, and portraits.

I would like to see a directional grid be made to modify the bounce on this umbrella - even if sold as an accessory at some point.

Overall, I would rate my satisfaction an 8 out of 10. For the price, you really cannot beat the value.

Westcott did a really bad design on this umbrella. As other reviewers mentioned, the black cover is a real pain. But it does not take long too reattach ... if you are a patient person and if you do not care about time consuming gear when it comes to clients...On the other hand, the size is just the most convenient feature about this product for storage matters or/and when traveling light. It comes with a plastic bag but again, it takes forever to put it back in. White satin came with little dirt stains and when removing the black cover, I can see a very cheap sewing job. (Green Sewing...c'mon!)If you are on budget buy one and try it for yourself. It gets the job done on pretty much everything you think you need it for, but its just a cheap made product. Price is ok, but now I am sure I rather use photoflex umbrellas.[...]Thanks B&H, I keep my trust in this wonderful company.

Not for professionals who are paid for their time

Comments about Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible:

I rarely give reviews...however, I am so mad at these umbrellas I cannot keep it to myself this time. I have been using them for 6 months. (I have been a full-time pro for 30 years.)  Every two piece umbrella I have used uses velcro half way up the ribs to keep the black cover connected to the tips of the ribs, or the tips are tight enough to stay on. These don't have them, the tips are loose so they fall off EVERY TIME.  I am over it, these are going in the trash.  The cost of USING it far out-weighs the cost of better one.  Those who say you just need to be patient is 1) letting their assistants deal with them, or 2) not busy enough to care.

High quality, well made. Easy to put up, but a bit of a pain to refold like it came.

Nice results but needs improvement in build quality

Comments about Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible:

The umbrella reflects nicely with the white satin material when the black cover is on and folds up to a very small sized accessory, however, if you fold it up with the black cover attached, some of the silver tips will come off which is really annoying. You have to take your time to put it away. One trick is to fold it most of the way and then hold onto all of the tips while folding it the rest of the way. It also takes a while to get it. Ack in its original plastic pouch. There aren't many collapsible umbrellas out there at this price but I do wish the black cover was attachable by velcro instead.

Excessively difficult to handle

Comments about Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible:

The removable black backing comes off the umbrella ribs every time I collapse the umbrella. The black backing then spreads and becomes extremely unwieldy and won’t fit inside the soft cover. You’ll have to reattach all eight ribs to the black backing every time you open up the umbrella.

Comments about Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible:

Yes, yes, everybody wants a softbox today, but that's only a trend. Umbrellas are tried and true--inexpensive, easy to travel with, easy to unfold and fold, they take up very little room. Westcott seems to be the leader these days in offering practical solutions at affordable prices. Is this the best lighting tool? No. But, I see it as an absolute necessity.

Comments about Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible:

I already had a couple of non-collapsible 32" white/black umbrellas. I wanted a couple of larger umbrellas and tried the collapsible version for portability. The one drawback is that when the umbrella is collapsed, the black cover unhooks from each end pin. Each time I unfold the umbrella I have to go around the circumference and re-fasten each clip. If I had it to do over again I would more strongly consider the non-collapsible variety.

This is a convertible umbrella where the outer black cover is removable. Unfortunately this cover doesn't stay on very well when umbrella is collapsed. Every time I open it, I have to reattach the cover.

Do you want a white umbrella? This is a white SATIN umbrella. It's got a kind of sheen to it, and from my experience probably takes an additional 1/3 to 1/2 a stop of light out when shooting through, but when shooting into it! Wow! Beautiful light!

This umbrella seems decent. I've only had it for a few weeks, but it's gotten the job done. I hate how the cover comes off, not that I use it all that much, but it requires some unscrewing. Seems like a good value overall, though.

Well-made convertible umbrella for use as a reflector or diffuser. Telescoping shaft seems solid enough and is great for packing.
