I purchased this after seeing tons of other photographers using them for weddings.

Actually - I purchased the collapsible one first, but I was very dissatisfied with the lower degree of diffusion and the difficulty in getting it on my Nikon SB-900.

The Universal works as advertised. It's easy to install (contrary to some reviews) on both my SB-900 and my SB-600's... It holds securely, and provides nicely diffused light. I find it works nicely with my studio umbrella light setup as well, if I decide to add a little fill light in the mix.

The GF "Universal" Lightsphere broke when placed for the 3rd time on my SB-900. The system, which tries (and fails in my experience) to accommodate flashes of very different sizes using rubber bands and velcro _fails_ on the large Nikon SB-900. I tried to fit it tightly and it just shattered. No excessive pressure, nothing. Broken. In my opinion it is _not_ compatible with the SB-900, claims to the contrary by Gary Fong not withstanding. I have no idea how well it works on smaller flash heads, or the smallest ones where I might be concerned about the security of the rubber band+velcro system for securing the supposedly universal device.

With that said, the two times I did use it before it broke I was pleased with the images compared to bounce+flash-card, especially in portrait mode. The direct light is good and the bounce + fill works well. The theory is good. In my experience the implementation is not adequate for serious work.

If you can (somehow) baby your gear in the field, the Gary Fong lightsphere might give you good results. That isn't me; I need to rely on my equipment and the universal ligthsphere fails badly with my SB-900 set. Even still, there is a gap that lets unmodified flash through to the subject. Not cool. I will either go back to card+bounce, try the Honl modifiers or something else. For me, the Gary Fong "Univeral" lightsphere is an Epic Fail.

This light diffuser lives up to its claims surprisingly well. I used it on a Canon 5D Mark IV and it provided soft, even light.

Speedlight enhancement

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System (Frosted):

A convenient way to use on camera flash without that on camera flash look. Particularly helpful if you cannot drag around a light stand and bounce flash may not be effective.

You need to play with the flash settings and a +2 stop on the flash may be necessary

Still Testing, but remain optimistic

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System (Frosted):

I admit I stayed away from the Gary Fongs for years an opted for the square diffusers because of easy storage. I have played with the GF a little at home but will put it to test at my next Event shoot at the end of March. And I did find storage for it in my backpack / camera bag.

This diffuser works well as expected. I had borrowed one previously from a friend and it worked well enough for some shots that I bought one for myself.

Love this!

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System (Frosted):

I had one of these I used for wedding photography during indoor receptions. I love the way it naturally diffuses the light in very low light situations. I had to order a second one so both my cameras are shooting such natural looking images.

Yes and no for this model

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System (Frosted):

The Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome frosted version is great for diffused light that is relatively inexpensive compared to other options, and is more portable for outside photo shoots. What upsets me is that the dome can ONLY be used in the inverted position on this model. The Fong videos confirm that it has a center spot. Whereas with the newer flexible model you can use the domes in both inverted and rounded side. This is very disappointing for me since the rounded side offers softer diffusion. Now I have to buy the flexible one. May want to consider the newer model.

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System (Frosted):

i use this for off the camera flash from the side and or from the back and I like the effect. Not harsh nor overly detailed. the inclusion of the band to help hold it onto the flash works great. No longer do I worry about the attachment coming off. There is no doubt it is bulky and it doesn't collapse. There is however, a collapsible version. Aside from it being a space hog in my camera bag it is a great product and I only carry it when I know I absolutley will be using it.

The lightsphere works great. It really knocks down the glare. I was very surprised at the quality of the dome. Some reviews stated it was cheaply made. I can tell you that this is not so. I tried it out by taking a pic of my son and there was no glare or shine on his face. Just what I needed.

I used the product just once doing tests and tried fitting it in my bag for transport and it didn't really work for me. I ended up taking it back to get the collapsible one and the customer service rep at the store ended convincing me to get a completely different diffuse kit, the Spinlight 360 which I've had nice success on, not to mention it comes with WAY more stuff for the price.

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System (Frosted):

I'd been using a much smaller and compact item from another manufacturer and it just wasn't having the effect that I was hoping for. The Lightsphere really does a great job of dispersing the light and diffusing it as well. It's gotten rid of a lot of that harsh look I'd frequently get in my shots from wedding recpetions. The only thing I don't like about it is the bulkiness since I use a belt system. But that's a small inconvenience compared to how well this product works!

I do a lot of event photography with flash and I wouldn't be without the Lightsphere Universal Inverted Dome Cloud Diffusion System, it softens event the starkest flash. My only complaint would be that the dome cloud tends to come off in my camera bag which can be annoying when im trying to have a fast setup
