The king of L-lenses

By MGNphotography

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

This lens is utterly remarkable thanks to the combination of brilliantly crisp focus on the subject, a flattering level of compression, and a gorgeous fall off of focus into buttery soft bokeh (a credit to it's quality construction and 2.0 maximum aperture). The bulk of the lens mounted on a 1DXmarkii is substantial, but nothing that a top-notch monopod and head can't alleviate. Nailing shots will take practice, particularly tracking fast action with such a razor-thin depth of field. But, a photographer who masters this lens can create art so unique and of such a high caliber that the lens is worth every penny.

In a close comparison with the 135/2.0L and the 70-200/2.8L IS, the 200/2L was sharper at f/2.0 than the other lenses at f/2.8, showed more contrast (blacker blacks and whiter whites), vivid colors, lightning quick focus, and a more creamy background with no defined circles on the "bokeh bubbles". Awesome (almost little) lens.

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

Very sharp. I guess if you are buying this lens you already know it's heavy. It's not so bad with the lens hood off. The lens almost doubles in size and becomes very conspicuous with the hood on. The hard case is nice if you plan to do a lot of air travel...it's just big enough to hold the lens although a lens mount plate can make closing the lid difficult. I would prefer a nice soft case that's more practical and I would be more likely to use. There's a Ruggard case...I think it's the Commando 36...that makes a great case for this lens. It's looks like it was designed to hold a sixpack of beer. It's easy to carry and the lens fits perfectly...and it's relatively inconspicuous. There's was one reviewer who complained about the standard issue gelatin filter holder. I agree with him...they should supply the screw in filter holder instead. By the way, just like the polarizing filter, there's an old and a new version. The old version seems to be permanently on back order, probably because Canon has no intention of making more of them. I finally discovered the newer "Screw WII" version which B&H had in stock. If it doesn't say "Screw WII" on the filter it's the old version. They look identical. The main difference is one is readily available, the other is not. The holder also comes with a 52mm Protect filter installed.

Speechless!!

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

Makes a rookie look like a pro. This lens is truly amazing. At F/2 I can't find the words but know it will fill my pockets with cash. Yep its heavy. Monopod works well; I use a Gitzo with a really right stuff head. I think its reasonably priced for what you get. The return on investment has already begun.

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

This lens by far is now my favorite on my Sony A7R2 with Metabones IV. It is heavy but I really dont mind the weight. When used with Yongnuo 2x TC III it will become a 400mm F4 and the image quality is not affected or undetectable unless you blow it up 1:1 and even if you do this you can still barely see the difference. This lens is fast with Metabones IV even with the 2X TC.

I have 12 L lens including the famous 85 f/1.2 L and the 300 f/2.8 . But 95% of the time I am using this lens and using it at f/2 . I shoot lots of environmental portraits in low light and as long as I have the room this is the only lens I use .

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

I've been dreaming of this lens for years.
Now that I've had some time to really use it - I am confident in saying that this is the best portrait lens, period. That's right... I'm looking at you 85 1.2!!

If you're reading this review, you probably already know about the stunning depth of field, razor sharp focus and speed. You probably also know it's heavy as hell, expensive and stands out like a sore thumb.

The most important thing I can convey is that this lens delivers the most stunning, dreamy, backgrounds and takes portraits second to none. If you ever have the opportunity to make this purchase as a portrait photographer..... DOOOOOO IT!!!

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

Sharp, Sharp, Sharp. So sharp you won't have to post-sharpen your image, especially a portrait subject.I received my lens last week and photographed my 4 year niece a few days later at the park with lens attached to a Canon 5D Mark II. Photographed her in open shade at 1/125 sec @f/2.8, handheld with IS turned on. I can't believe how sharp the image is at f/2.8 and the sharpness and creamy bokeh can't be beat by the Canon 135mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 II IS lens set to f/2.8. I also bought the Don Zeck C3 lens cap after reading the B&H lens review recommendation and happy I did. The lens cap that comes with the lens is big and awkward and should be replaced by Canon with something similar to the Zeck C3. The lens is a little heavy and the lens hood can be tricky to attach since it's not bayoneted to the lens like other Canon lens and hood combinations.Looking forward to using the lens again in a few days. The lens is pricey but if you buy it, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

My previous 200mm f2 was the Nikon version vri. Im happy with the Canon version as its technically 400 grams lighter which is a lot when you have to lug it around all day. Performance is around the same. Feet on the canon is better. Collar on the canon is better with preset 90 degree positions that click into place. Make sure you get the don zeck cap with this. I was lucky with my copy as i did not experience the noise issues when paired with the 5d mark iii. The hard case with this lens is a nice touch.

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

Fast glass - yes, super shallow depth of field, an extra stop of light vs a f/2.8 lens. Claimed to be the fastest 200mm in production. Fast focus - yes but not as fast as the 70-200 f/2.8 II, or the 300 f/2.8 II. Of course the 220 f/2.0 is MUCH faster to focus than the 85 f/1.2 II. Buy the lens cap designed for the 300 f/2.8 II as it works much better than the silly leather boot that comes with the 200 f/2.0. Recommended.

This is one of those lenses people research for months and go back and forth on. The price scares folks, the "weight" .Really those are the only things I could imagine anyone could find to complain about with the lens, First off the price is totally reasonable to me, I cant imagine the millions and millions of dollars spent to develop this lens, Now im not saying you wont be shocked when you open the credit card bill, but come on, you cant fake what this lens does. And really the weight is not a factor at all if you ask me. bottom line the thing is as close to perfect as I;ve seen

Use this for basketball shootin with my 5d mark 2. Awesome lens but ended up selling mine for more than what I paid for it and ended up buying a 7d and the 135 f2 lens that live together. Was able to pick up the 50 1.2 for the 5d. Digging this set up a lot. Smaller, lighter and got a bit more reach.

Comments about Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens:

Sharp, sharp, sharp! This lens is everything you have read about and more. My hit rate went up considerably compared to my 70-200 2.8 IS. F/2 at this focal length has to be seen to be believed. It gathers so much light that low light shooting is much easier. Focus is fast and silent on my 1DM4 and 1DM3 bodies although my 70-200 did focus a bit faster which surprised me. Tracking improved quite a bit over the 70-200 producing 9 out of 10 sharp images. I use this for sports and portraits mostly.

The down sides are the weight which is to be expected and the lack of a lens cap. I bought the AquaTech softCap made for the 300 f/2.8 since they fit the 200 f/2 which works perfectly. Also the $$$ lens hood is a bit tricky to get on and off but you get used to it. Overall this is a near perfect lens.
