I bought this lens over a year ago. People ask me about my photos all the time. I have even had people want to come shoot with me as a result of my photography. Once they see my lens and camera, they are really shocked that I have taken the photos I get with this lens. I cannot say enough about the clarity and detail I receive from this lens. It is cheap and not well made, but it does a fantastic job for the focal length and cost! I would recommend it to anyone that cannot afford an L-series lens. Greg Jowers

Positive first: It's a good lens, not just for shows and sports but also for an everyday use, if you like shooting telephoto.
It is not super fast, but usually also not slow at all, I use it on the T5i and the AF nails it pretty fast so don't worry about loosing too many pictures because of it.
As for the downside, besides the all-plastic built which feels a little like holding a toy, there is a real one major downside for this lens - and it is the Canon 55-250mm STM.
For extra 50$ the STM offers a quicker and INTERNAL focus. AT first I thought that it is not such a huge upgrade, but after using the IS II for an hour I realized that saving myself those 50$ was a huge mistake. Sure, the image quality and the optics are quite the same - but this lens rotates A LOT while focusing, which makes it NOISY, SLOW, and a pain in the neck if you are using a polarizing filter. At some points the lens mechanism also moves to far ahead in order to focus that it actually changes your framing a little.
So add the extra 50$ and buy yourself the 55-250mm STM, I wish I had, it's worth it.

Canon EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 II Lens

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

Had my Canon Rebel Ti3 for two years, had simply gotten by with the 18-55 lens that came with the camera. Having been an amatuer/freelance photographer (published) for over 40 years, came to realize how much I missed having a zoom lens. This particular lens for the money cannot be beat. Knowing ahead of time the outer limitations of the product before I purchased I had no disappointment at all with this piece of equipment. Sharp/crisp images, up close very clear, and in daylight/sunshine the lens is fast enough at ASA 400 to give me spectacular results for action photography. After having read a multiplicity of reviews I assumed I would not be over the top about this lens, just satisfied, but after having taken it to Galveston Texas over the past weekend, I can tell you it is fantastic. Great lens at a phenomenally low price point!

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

I use this to run and gun short films and docs. Works great. Looks clean. It has trouble finding focus in AF and will keep looking if the subject moves just a little, but I usually keep it turned to manual focus. For the price, nothing to complain about.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

If you're a beginner, this is an absolute necessity.

If you want to shoot professional level sports and expect to get hired by Sports Illustrated, this is most definitely not for you.

I rank myself at the intermediate level (both in artistic and sports images).

I've used a nice range of lenses (LensRental.com - try it!) to get a feel for what I need for the photography life I lead and this has become one of my favorite and most respected lenses.

I got this as a bonus with the T2i and the kit lens and I keep coming back to it.

I've even used a 70-200mm f/2.8 for sports and I still came back to this one (on a budget, I have to choose between aperture and distance and that extra 50mm meant a lot more to me in the end).

This biggest factor to know about this lens it's a variable aperture. That means the more you zoom in, the smaller the aperture gets. When fully zoomed out, you have an f/4 aperture but when fully zoomed in, you are limited to f/5.6.

It's great for parents who want to shoot their kids' sports events and high school kids who want to use it for the school newspaper.

This will not get you those glossy beautiful images the pro's get on the NFL sidelines.

As long as you understand that beforehand, it's a wonderful lens.

I keep mine in my bag at ALL times.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

I got this lens instead of 75-300mm so I wouldn't have a gap between my lenses and I couldn't be happier. The lens shows great quality with the zoom and lens focus. Would recommend to anyone that just has the basic 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera.

For amateur use this is a great lens. It has image stabilizer which is helpful specially at full zoom. The lens makes noise during focus but tolerable.

Initial Review

By Alan

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

Got this lens very recently, as a cheap, short-term zoom for my recently-acquired Canon EOS M3 (combination of travel camera/B roll camera for video assignments). If this combination works out well, then I'll invest a little in upping the spec...if not, then I've got a flexible and powerful little vacation kit, that weighs (and costs to replace!) a fraction of my 5D MkIII or 6D with L series glass!
The lens is inexpensive, so pretty much what I expected...build looks / feels a little cheap, executing manual focus racks produces an effect like the zoom is moving too...but the first results of using it for stills and video are VERY passable. I don't expect a lifetime warranty with this lens, but it just saw me through a vacation in Europe, and a made its money back by supplying very nice B-footage at a long, hot wedding job in Florida!
