I bought the lens for slide copying with a Nikon D800, for which itworks well. I attach pictures of the apparatus. The light is a standard,clip-mount, reflector light one sees everywhere. The bulb is a 13WGlobe CFL. The slide carriers are VuPoint (B&H VUNST35) the diffuseris 3046 Cinegan Velvet Frost (B&H RO3046S) the tripod head is an oldBogen I had on hand. The hardest part was getting a good lightsource. I tried a flash, an LED Video light, a Testrite Reflector(B&H TER10), etc. The simple clip-mount, reflector light worked thebest. Also, a report cover works nearly as well as the CineganVelvet Frost but there is a difference in amount of light transmitted and grain showing through the slide. The big surprise is that this is an excellent lens overall, especially for portraits. The resolution is excellent and it required zero auto focus correction. At wide apertures, it beautifully isolates subjects with narrow depth of field. The finer points of this lens are discussed by Ming Thein in a post dated February 1, 2013. I agree with everything he says about it.

A macro lens without a manual aperture ring sure disables the ability to use some of the traditional macro gear like bellows. I still cannot believe that Nikon would design a lens targeted at macro photography without working in an aperture ring. Still, this lens gets plenty close without further extension... maybe too close for many subjects. I so prefer to have the aperture be from the ring when I'm working in tight situations. But oh well.

But aside from the "G," 60mm is a little wide for bugs, and might yield too much perspective distortion on some objects when you attempt to fill the frame at close range. The 105mm VR and the 3rd party macro offerings up to 150mm by Sigma might be worth considering.

It's not built like a tank... nor is it built like a flower. But with its light weight, it feels like a reasonable construction design and adds little weight.

As far as using it as a portrait lens, well, again the optics are great for it; however, if you're doing really close-in work rather than traditional portraits, well, I'd still prefer my 50mm f/1.2 AIS or the 50 f/1.4 just for the shallow DOF.

The front element is not very much recessed compared to other true macro lenses ... so do be careful around pollen-bearing objects and other things that might soil or damage your glass. If you put a filter on this thing, remove it for macros... and use a high-end filter like a B+W for the rest of the time. Don't spoil the great optics with inferior glass.

Focus is absolutely fast.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

Light weight & compact, perfect for many applications. Extremely sharp, nice saturated colors, accurate focusing. Does not replace my Sigma 150mm macro when increased subject distance is a requirement but is a great addition to my lens kit.

This lens is perfect when needed

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I use this lens mainly for food photography. I have a 105 Macro but sometimes I have to be too far back to get a shot of a couple plated dishes. I need the capability of also stepping in close for shallow depth of field / macro shots and this lens does that perfectly. It is Sharp!! Images are amazing from this lens on my Nikon D810. Using the 105 and 60mm for close up gives you every option necessary for food and drinks.

Nice lens for Micro shots... I also have the 105mm Micro. Seems like the 60mm gives me just a little more depth then the 105mm love them both!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

Had the 60mm lens years ago until stolen in a home break in. Missed it, missed it, missed it. So finally I bit the bullet and bought a new one. No regrets there. Sharp, beautiful close ups and wonderful for the type of work I do.

The sharpness is so worth it.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I mostly shoot things like crystals, and non living objects. Here is a tip. et used to manual. With Macro, you must be able to select your focus; not your camera. Like "The Fro" says: "You are smarter then your camera." Still planning on getting the "D"version of the lens. "The Angry Photographer on youtube claims that "it is tantamount to a sin" not to have the 60mm D lens.

The images are sharp, but it can be challenge, although doable o hold it steady for the sharp focus. I would say that it is great in focus.

What is it not for: anything other then prorates, and macro work.

Nikon's new 60mm macro prime is as sharp as they get with good bokeh and quick auto focus. It works well on the D750 with quick snappy and accurate focus and good color contrast and detail. It's also nice and and light. This lens is an easy recommendation.
