I needed a hair light stand for interview shoots. I had a limited budget but wanted something reliable and sturdy. You can never go wrong with Manfrotto!

This stand does the trick. It extends to a decent height and length and the includes weight gives the stand the extra support it needs.

You won't be dissapointed

The "boom" clamp has a lock hole (for a pin) for holding vertical position (no boom rotation), BUT in boom position, there is only one secure rotation position and clamped in place. The problem arises in attempt to hold and balance a heavy load. (I have the Spider TD6+2-4' soft box: heavy). There is only one hole at tip of boom shaft. Assuming you can attached a sand bag to it, one only has one option for balance (moving in and out the boom shaft!). This is very difficult to do. I have my unit mounted on a Smith-Micro dolly; when trying to balance, I pull the feet out of the dolly (a dolly fault). My rating is based on the boom optional use; else, a 4 star rating is desered.

I like the simplicity of this stand, it's lightweight, easy to set up and tear down, storage is easy since it fits in my carrying case. I have two of them in my studio...

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

This stand is definitely a secure stand for holding up lights and light modifiers. I use it to hold the Westcott Apollo Orb with two canon speedlites without any problems. The stand comes with an empty sandbag that can be filled to the desired weight. The clamp securely holds the boom in place. I would recommend this stand if you need a little more reach than a straight boom stand.

Best boom stand!

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

Love this stand!!! I mostly use it for a boom mic and occasionally for a small LED backlight or hair light. Great size for most talking head type interviews / videos.

I have two of these now and they are awesome. Great built quality and they function perfectly. A must have on a smaller set. But make sure to use a sandbag on the bottom or they will tip over.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

Good quality product, but there is also a Fotodiox generic that is exactly the same for a lower price! Make sure you use counterweights. I needed to even with a small octabox!

Works great, not real crazy about the locking handle, seems that you really need to get it tight in order to hold it. Counter weights are a requirement, not as a maybe.

Not for heavy 5-6 ft octabox.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

I've used it once, but it was the very scenario I bought it for: Had to hustle in to a client's offices and conduct a testimonial series of interviews. This was the boom that held the backlight/hairlight for my 3-point lighting. With my backpack as counterweight, the boom worked perfectly. Light enough to not add killer weight to my stick bag (my previous boom was twice as heavy). Not so light that it feels cheap and breakable. It's such a relief to me when something "just works" like advertised. This stand can be used in vertical config or boomed to reach across open space. It has become a permanent part of my light kit.

This was my first time time working with a boom stand and I found it very awkward to manipulate and balance. I later rented a C-Stand for an event I shot and realized that a C-stand complete was more suited for my needs. The 420B Combi Boom Stand was recommended to me by the creator of the light modifier Saberstrip.
Although the stand is lightweight it lack the duribility and flexibility I discovered when using a C-stand complete.

I use it to boom a Mola beauty dish (which is heavy) and this thing works like a charm. It's a bit on the expensive side but it's an investment and is worth the money! Don't forget to get yourself a counterweight though.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

Typical great Manfotto quality. Very well machined. Works great as a standalone light stand or a terrific boom for lights or mics. Be sure to use the included counterweiught and always wise to sandbag the stand when booming. Boom height is a little short, but this is a great stand for the money. Will last a very long time.
