holding lights, holding cameras, reinforcing a large 60 inch Varavon slider so I can use just one tripod vs. two.... had it out 5 times since I bought it and have used it for 5 different things. Solid! for cameras I have mounted a d4/50mm 1.4 and even a Sony FS100/Tokina 12-24 from it without issue. I used it to mount a White Lightning X1600 from a rafter and even a large LED light from a tripod leg for video Folds up small and needs no padding or anything (can't see it getting damaged even if I let it roll around in the trunk for years) so it travels wellWish Manfrotto would just get with the times and go with ARCA style pates and clamps as an option for all of the products they offer

Although it does grip super tight and does not slip or become loose whatsoever, I found that when I attached a Canon 5D and a 24-205mm lens, the whole rig wobbles slightly, and it shows up in the photos with blurring and smearing when using it for long exposures, especially when zooming in. I wouldn't recommend it for long exposures with heavier cameras on the end of it.
Also the Empire State Building would not allow it past the security check point no matter what I told them- they knew what it was and don't want cameras being clamped to the fencing.

I use this with a super clamp to mount two cameras for video interviews. It sure beats carrying two tripods - this is a life-saver.

Great for mounting cameras in weird spots!

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

Love these magic arms for attaching cameras to light stands or off camera flashes in weird spots. The arm allows me to position the camera perfectly and it easily holds a DSLR, although I usually mount mirrorless cameras on them.

Magical Indeed - the Manfrotto Variable Arm

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

This tool has become an indispensable part of my photo-toolkit. It lets me complete the tough-to-light shot with proper placement of the arm in small or odd-layout spaces. It has great fit & finish; robust long-lasting components; folds to compact size; holds or grips anything with a 3/8 or "quarter-twenty" and to anything less than 4" wide. I'm about to buy at least one other to expand my location kit. It won't overburden a shoot. One shoot and it's already paid for itself. Can't recommend it highly enough...

Not the strongest mount

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

Quality product, however, does not hold position with a 4 lb load, despite claims by the manufacturer that it can support more weight.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

Great accessory!! So many varied uses: travel tripod with additional feet or super clamp, table mount, flash mount, video mount, etc. not sure why I waited so long to buy this much needed accessory. It is now a standard piece in my bag.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

I use this as an adjustable flash arm for my macro photography and it's very useful. But it's good that I work out because the weight is something to consider when using it in the manner I am. The arm its self isn't bad but when you combine it with the entire rig I use everything adds up. The only other complaint would be that the camera plate can slip on the camera body if you only tighten by hand. But so far it's tough and I love the lighting options it gives me in my photography.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

I love these. We use these at my work all the time... They get abused and keep working. They work great for anything, but we use them in sporting events. Inside at gyms and Outside in the rain, cold weather. You name it.

Cons

Best Uses

  • Over Table Setup

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

I purchased this primarily to use for over table video filming. I have the arm clamped to a pipe (using the Manfrotto Super Clamp), the pipe is attached to my design table. I used to trip over tripod legs and bump my camera during filming. This has been the best product I could have purchased for my needs. Study and easy to use; I can get my camera into position quickly.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

So far this product has been nothing short of awesome for me. I shoot a lot of hockey, and sometimes the only place to clamp is the underside of a dasher board (always use safety cables), but so far, the clamp has been fantastic.

It took me a couple of practice runs to be quick about setting it up...but it's SO easy and very convenient for my remote camera shots.

Not sure why I waited so long to buy one.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

So having used small, cheap friction arms for a while now, I thought I'd get this name-brand one. My personal and work tripods both have "quick connects" for just such a device. However, this is MUCH larger than the ones I've been working with. It doesn't fit directly into a 3/8 thread, but needs a bit of extra hardware. That said, coupled with the super clamp, it's nearly as useful as a second tripod.
