I'm a working pro. I've owned and used this lens for about 2 years now, so I feel my opinion is in pretty good authority to speak about it. This is the only review I have ever left so I hope it sincerely helps somebody make an informed purchase. It comes down to auto focus. In my portrait and fashion work, 1) the model is not moving in distance from me 2) I'm shooting at a huge aperture of f11. Therefore, auto focus is not a big deal because I get the focus once then I'm good for the rest of the shoot basically. This lens is great for that. In fact, there is no lens better. But I've tried to use this in many other circumstances such as event/documentary/PR. Auto focus lets you snag the shot the second you see something unfold, nearly guaranteeing focus and only being a split second behind "the moment". This lens requires a good few seconds of manually focusing until it's dead on. If you try and eyeball it through the viewfinder you will probably miss focus even if just by a bit. It does have focus confirmation, but that only works if you have a lot of direct light. If you're in a semi dark room, it will take forever to nail focus.I've had a love/hate relationship with this lens for 2 years now, and after all this time I've finally decided to sell it for a lens with auto focus. I did not think it would be a big deal auto focusing... but I promise it can really bite you in the behind.ALSO - I've never read anywhere and wish I had when I first purchased. Resale value is absolute trash. Look on[@], [@], used sites... nobody is selling these. You will get trash for what you paid for.Bottom line: In circumstances where auto focus is COMPLETLY irrelevant, this lens cannot be beat. But, where auto focus would be even slightly helpful, this lens can ruin you.Hope this helps somebody!

Rented this lens for a week, to compare to my Canon 85mm f/1.8. Own Zeiss 100mm f2 Macro, 50mm f1.4, and 21mm f2.8, all of which are outstanding lenses. The 85mm was a disappointment to me, especially with the vignetting that occurred wide open. Didn't see the 3D snap I get with other Zeiss lenses. May be due to being a rental, but doesn't appear to be worth the $800 difference versus the Canon 85/1.8, which may be the best value in the Canon lineup.

The Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar T* is pure magic!

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

Right away, before I purchased this lens, I went ahead and rented it together with the new 85mm f/1.4 Zeiss Milvus version for comparison. The Milvus is considered to be the technically superior lens. The tech specs on paper look fantastic, it features less CA and has noticeably better corner sharpness wide open. And yet, after shooting with both lenses over the course of a weekend, I found myself constantly selecting the shots I have taken with the "inferior" Zeiss Planar. Actually, there was not a single picture taken with the Milvus that got me excited, they all felt bland in comparison.

There is just something magical in the way the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar T* is drawing the images, and the color rendering is breathtaking! You can take a picture of a simple household item and it will look like a work of art. Yes, wide open this lens shows quite some CA, but in return you are rewarded with some unique bokeh and a touch of optical magic, not found on the newer version. And while there might be some artful haziness, center sharpness is already very good even at f/1.4 and once stopped down, this lens is as sharp as the best of its competition, including the new Milvus. Highly recommended!

This is hands down my favorite lens in my bag. Amazing focus throw, color reproduction, bokeh, and sharpness. Everything looks amazing with this, especially faces. This is the same glass as the 85mm CP2 at 1/4 the price. Amazing for video work

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

This is a great lens for the price. The colors that are produced and the overall picture quality is just simply amazing. I switched from shooting autofocus L series lenses and I have not regretted it. I found that For my photography and for my video work, I rarely used the autofocus capabilities and when I did use it, it was too slow to be affective. This series of Zeiss lenses are perfect for anyone who wants to switch to primes and does not need to pay an extra grand for a motor in their lens.
The other thing that is very different in this lens than the canon lenses is the focus ring is stiffer. This can be a pro in getting great depth of field shots, especially in video where you focus on the foreground and move towards the background. This is also a negative because rack focus is harder to achieve.
The only "con," which I do not consider a bad thing necessarily is the weight of the lens. It is very very heavy.
The bottom line is the canon lenses were not giving me what I wanted and the Zeiss lenses are perfect and a huge step up.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

This is my fifth Zeiss ZE lens. My set includes the 18, 25, 35, 50 and now the 85. All are used via a Metabones adapter on a Sony FS100, and sometimes on my NEX-7 and 5DII.

I prefer Zeiss lenses over their Canon L equivalents because they are solid, sharp all the way, and have solid, firm focus rings. They don't flop loosely like those on some auto focus lenses.

The only thing I can say about Zeiss lenses is...if you ever pick one up and use it, you will be hooked.

As far as the 85 is concerned, I haven't had a chance to use it all that much yet in productions, but it is as sharp as any other Zeiss, and its bokeh is amazingly good. A CU pops so well it's almost 3D.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

I use a 1DX and wanted this for a portrait lens. I think 85mm is great for what I wanted and since I have bought and sold the Canon 1.2 twice so far, and since I love Zeiss, I wanted to try this one. I love the images. In my opinion, it is not a great lens to hand hold at SS slower than 1/100. Tripod, no problem, faster shutter speeds, great. The lack of autofocus and IS will be a problem for many and should not be overlooked. FYI, I "mount" the camera on top of my left shoulder and use lots of other manual focus lenses without a problem. It might be better if I used a 5DM3 perhaps to lighten the overall weight, but this is a heavy lens due to its incredible build quality.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

This quality of the image that this lens produces is amazing. Color reproduction is natural and cinematic and out of focus subjects (bokeh) is very natural as well. Corners stay sharp and overall sharpness is excellent. Like any lens it is just a tool in your toolbox and is not ideal for all situations. It is an amazing portrait and studio lens or for situations that don't call for autofocus tracking and dynamic moving subjects. You can use it in those situations but be prepared for out of focus shots if you have the f/stop below 11 or so. Calibrating the lens with your camera's autofocus computer may help. The autofocus confirmation helps but is not foolproof. It is also great for shooting video because of its accurate, solid, smooth flowing manual focus. I use this lens for video journalism applications and also for event and portrait photography such as weddings. I don't recommend buying this as your primary lens for weddings as you will not nail the focus on many of your shots in the dynamic environment. Save it for the portrait sessions and detail shots. Although its not built in Germany some of the elements are mfg in Germany and final assembly takes place in Japan. Quality overall still amazing.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

This is an amazing lens. I use it for video work on my 7D, so the crop factor makes it a bit more telephoto than the lens would be for FF camera, but it makes my footage look so juicy it hurts. Initial focusing tests put the DOF right on the marks, and the focus is razor sharp as open as 2,0 and only gets better the more you close the aperture. My only beef is the focus ring. It's got a lot of resistance to it AND a LOT of travel, which is nice because you can get soo precise with your focus, but the circumference it must travel to follow focus across relatively large distances makes it time consuming and difficult. I have a redrock micro follow focus with their brand focus gears and I have to choose the placement of the screw on the gear very wisely or else I'll end up running into it and flubbing the shot and it can't be good for that delicate gear box. This is because the focus ring travels around almost if not at least one entire lap around the lens to go from infinity to it's closest focus point.A minor complaint, it is a beautiful lens and the bokeh and the bokeh is yummy.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

This is my favorite 85mm lens. I have the Canon 85mm f/1.2L, which is a great lens, and probably more "accurate" in color rendition. However, the Canon lens is a beast (it's heavy and big), the auto-focus is slow, and even the manual focus is not great (since the ring doesn't move the optical elements directly). I think the Canon 85mm f/1.2L is better if you shoot in studio or with a tripod. However, I take most of my pictures hand-held, and manual focus works better in dark environments or to take quick shots. Also, this lens is less "in your face" than the Canon.
Compared to the 85mm f/1.8 USM, this is obviously much more expensive and only has manual focusing. But the f/1.8 isn't as sharp or has as good a bokeh (or color "pop") as this lens.
Other great things: built like a tank, feels great in your hand, controls are super-accurate, the lens hood is well built (metal too!).
Small downside: the lens hood interferes with some filters (I can't put it on/off if the filter ring is too big).

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

I used this product recently on a trip for business to LA on a 7D body.. i own the 18,35, and 50mm in this Zeiss series , i mainly bough them for shooting HDSLR video but began using them more and more for still photography. The manual focus allows you to really concentrate on composer of your shots, it slows you down so its not just snap snap snap, It is definitely difficult to get super sharp images at 1.4 so makes sure you have a tripod. I find with the zeiss usually 1 stop up from the lens lowest aperture gains you the sharpest image even in the edges... this lens is just amazing.. zeiss contrast beautiful bokeh.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

The Carl Zeiss 85mm F/1.4 ZE is a nice moderate telephoto lens for someone looking to move around during a portrait session. The lens is long enough to compress perspective but it's not too long which allows you to keep getting close or backing away from your subject. There is minimal distortion as well since the lens is longer than 50mm.

The build is my favorite build out of the three Carl Zeiss lenses I own. I have the 21mm and the 50mm. The focusing ring feels the most rigid and solid over the three.

Technically the lens is at its sharpest from F/4.0 to F/16.0 the sharpness does degrade a little but is still acceptable from F/2.8 and F/2.0 and below F/2.0 the sharpness is pretty poor and you will run into your usually problems shooting completely wide open. However I personally like the look of the imperfections below F/2.0, as this lens is a portrait lens not a landscape lens and flaws in portraiture can make interesting photographs.

The only cons I could find that are not too bothersome but still worth pointing out are the lens lets in flares more than it should for a telephoto without the lens hood on in harsh lighting. And of course the weight, if you're doing a short shoot this isn't a problem but if you walk around for hours like I do the weight of the lens can get to you.

Overall I still love this lens and I am happy with my purchase.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

I have only used the lens for a couple of weeks now with an EOS 5D MKII but can already see a difference in my photography. Most noticeable is the depth and clarity in what would have been dark almost hidden areas if I had taken the shot with my Canon EF85 1.8USM. I think this is what some reviewers refer to as the 3D look when using Zeiss glass. Colors are richer and more saturated as well. Focusing is pretty easy with EF-S screen. Focusing ring is robust and smooth as silk. Yes I have to think more about my shots but that is a good thing that I had become accustomed to taking for granted. Nice soft bokeh. I feel its sharp even at f1.4 but does have a very narrow dof at that aperture. I don't find the weight to be a detraction and love the solid attachment of the metal hood. Only minor negative is that if you are going to use filters I wouldn't want to use anything on it other than Zeiss or maybe B&W and these get pretty expensive.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

I purchased this lens for my new Canon 5D Mark II camera, primarily for video and occasional stills shooting. I am amazed at the way images "pop" with this lens. The separation from the background is AMAZING, with its high-quality optics producing phenomenal "bokeh" (soft focus background blur).

Fast (f/1.4) and contrasty in low-light, and tack sharp edge-to-edge throughout its aperture range.

The mechanical build quality of this lens is also superb -- using all metal construction. The focus ring is long throw and smooth as butter!

I highly recommend this lens. One of the best I've ever owned!

This is an excellent lens. Sharp. I use it mainly for HDSLR video, which means the manual focus isn't a downside. In fact, the ease of focus with this lens is excellent, especially compared to my Canon 24mm L lens. I consider this lens to be a very good value. At this price, I expected a lot and was not disappointed at all.

Build quality is excellent. The lens is appropriately heavy. The hood is metal and attaches easily and securely.

Comments about Zeiss Telephoto 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS:

When I first started using this lens more than a year ago, I was disappointed. It wasn't as sharp as I was expecting on my 5DmkII when shooting wide open, and sometimes even as I started stopping it down. I slowly discovered that many of my issues were user error, that my technique had become sloppy and that this lens expected me to put out my best performance every time I used it. When thoughtfully used and properly focused and supported, this lens is capable of producing results that are downright "magical".

In fact, magical is the best word I can use to describe it. Every once in a while I produce a shot with this lens that redefines my expectations of my own photography, and then I spend days, weeks and sometimes months practicing to master the technique that led to the discovery. This is an extremely challenging lens to use. Focus shift means you need to use live view to get the best results. And use a monopod for better support when shooting live view. The change of character from milky smoothness wide open to biting sharpness stopped down makes it several lenses in one, each with its own unique drawing style and way of looking at the world.

Get this lens, explore it, savor it and learn from it. It will challenge you. It becomes the master and makes you the learner. Sit at its feet for a while and don't get discouraged. It will surprise you and show you that you are both a better and worse photographer than you had every dared to imagine. If you don't give up then you and your photography will be changed because of it.
