I really like the durable design. I have been using it with my AF100 and G2 for video and photography. It is a little harder to use it on severely awkward surfaces with the AF100 because the camera is heavier than a DSL, but I was pretty surprised at how well it actually holds up. I bought the 492LCD Micro Ball Head to use with this and it is a great combination, just make sure you buy an adapter as well like the Pearstone 1/4-20 F to SHOE MOUNT F ADAPTER - PEAFF1420. The only complaint that I have is that when using with an adapter to mount the little Manfrotto tripod head, the screw doesn't screw in very far to the 1/4" adapter. This worries me a little bit because I have an expensive camera sitting on top of it. But if you're screwing it directly into a camera, it screws in plenty far enough and seems to be durable.

I bought Gorillapod and the ballhead to use it as an alternate for big tripods thinking it is much small and easy to carry around and still get the same stability of big tri-pods. I have put Manfrotto 357 Pro Quick Release Adapter on top of Gorillapod so that I can switch between tripod and Gorillapod easily. I use it with Canon 7D with EF 24-70 f2.8L and Canon EF-S 10-22 f3.5-5.6 lens mainly for landscape photography and 24-70, 50mm f1.4 for portraits. I also shoot videos with 7D and a camcorder.
Gorillapod is very light compared to tripods and easy to set up at any location (only thing you can't expect is the height). I am happy with its easy to use and can fit in tight corners to get a stable shot.
This Joby Gorillapod Focus claims to support upto 11 lbs but it doesn't hold the weight of Canon 7D and Canon EF 24-70. With these two and other accessories the weight doesn't exceed 5 lbs. I have to carefully align it center of gravity and its not always possible when shooting outdoors. It can only handle small lens/camera which are not that heavy. I have stopped using it on 24-70 and use only with 10-22 which is much lighter lens.
So I still have to carry a tripod if I have to use 24-70. So far I don't have a problem with its construction, feels pretty good.

Do not buy. The joints crack and don't hold the weight of your expensive camera. I contacted Joby and they told me to super glue the joints or buy a new one. Why would i buy a new one if they don't stand behind their product.

I tried this with my Canon 5D3 and the 24-105mm L series lens. Supported the weight on the ground with no problem. I actually tried it on a tree the way the examples show and where it slid down the tree, if I held my hand under the camera to keep it from sliding down, it worked great with a 2 second exposure using a remote shutter release. I gave it 5 stars even though it doesn't perform like the pictues for 2 reasons. 1 is that I didn't expect it to and would never trust it with my camera equipment that much, and 2 I probably could have done a better job at securing it but was losing light at the time so I was rushing. So for my 15 plus mile hikes, this is a must.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus - Flexible Mini-Tripod:

I figured if I was going to test the strength of the GorillaPod Focus and the optional Joby ball head, I was going to test it with the heaviest gear I have. So in a box big enough to hold the GorillaPod and my gear, I attached a Nikon 200-400mm f/4 VR II to a Nikon D810 having an L-bracket with the legs separated about the angle of a standard tripod (I even went so far as to tilt the lens forward about 20 degrees) and padded the box with some fluffy pillows on 4 sides with about 3 inches of clearance all around everything. From the bottom of the GorillaPod to the lens foot was around 13.5 inches. My rationale was that if anything sagged or broke, there wouldn't be such a gap in cushioning that I would ruin $ worth of gear. Four hours later and NOTHING MOVED!I then tried the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II and my lightest lens, the 16mm f/2.8 fisheye, in a portrait orientation on various flat and textured surfaces. The GorillaPod tipped over immediately because of the off-centre weight distribution (as I expected), but I found that if I held the legs and pushed into the surface (like a sandbag attached to the pin of the centre column of a standard tripod), the shots were very sharp and still better than hand-holding.I then tried a setup like the picture of the camera and GorillaPod attached to a post. Having no post readily available, I wrapped it around the arm rest of a faux leather office chair with the 70-200mm in portrait orientation, thus simulating a fence railing on the side of a highway. It was a little wobbly because the GorillaPod legs do not wrap the arm rest perfectly; however, I could brace the legs with one hand and spin the chair with the other while taking a shot every 30 degrees or so and using the overlap to create a tack sharp 360 degree panorama in Photoshop. The GorillaPod legs could be a little longer at times to wrap around objects having more circumference, but more horizontal thickness than vertical height of the railing, etc. is almost a given so gravity doesn't take over with heavier gear.My last test was shaping the legs so the bottom third or so was as much perpendicular as possible to the rest of the legs and attached a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR macro lens to the D810. The result was having the centre of the GorillaPod about 2 or 3 inches off the ground for a low angle macro shot. The combination was very stable even with the lens in a portrait position.Obviously, my tests weren't "real world" in that I wasn't outside or even in a studio setting, but rather in the den in my house using the floor and the aforementioned office chair. The GorillaPod is not going to completely replace my Gitzo carbon fibre. Is it the be-all and end-all of camera support? No. Do I trust it completely to hold my gear in any situation absolutely solid without being close enough to intervene if it collapses? No. Will something like the joints on it break? Sure, they might at some point but I expect to get a lot of good use out of it. Until then, in those situations where I can hold the legs (bent or not) for added stability or lie it relatively flat with 10 inch legs in cramped spaces instead of the 21 inch legs of the Gitxo, then it certainly fits the bill for me!

Don't know that I'll use it to hang my camera and lens from a tree, but it is a great lightweight option when traveling and I don't want to lug a large tripod with me. Well made and sturdy. I paired it with a Sunpak Light weight Pistol Grip Ball Head. Using the combination I will be able quickly adjust to get sturdy level shots just about anywhere.

I was in New York and wanted to take pictures from the Rock or the Empire state. Both places say no tripods allowed so I ended up buying this and mounted a rrs bh-40 head on. This combo was the perfect fit on top of the rock. Security did not say a word. Heavy winds were no issues for 5d mark II and 24-105, 24tse or 17mm tse or 70-200 f/2.8. It was actually better than a tripod because I was able to get my camera closer to the edge of the guardrail. It is a stable set upthat can be also laid flat as well. The disadvantage can be its weight. A carbon fiber tripod obviously is more lightweight. I recommend this product. Great value for the money.

rugged tripod small enough to bring around, good decent, pretty strong enough to hold mid weight 8-10lbs SLRs. Specially with X head.

attached to most of things.(nothing too thin)
I tried to attach my 5d with 24-105L with ball head on a think pipe and it moved a little..

the screw for the attaching point should be steel piece, little nicks on it already removing head from the tripod only few times....

I am easily satisfied but not easily impressed. This tripod has a host of impressive engineering features that really did impress me. It is light (even with the beefy Joby ballhead), small (easily fits inside my camera backpack) and easily holds my SLR with a typical lens (4.5-6# plus) without problems. What really impressed me is that you really can wrap the legs around a post or pole and expect it to hold your camera. I tried it on a painted steel pole (rather slick) at a playground and it easily held my camera without slip, slide, or droop. Each segment is surrounded by a rubber O-ring that grips a slick painted surface with ease. I have owned this for about a month now. I am hoping the ball joints don't loosen with age. We'll see. For now I am indeed impressed.

First saw one in use with full size DSLR in Venice and wondered about use, functionality. Finally procured one of my own and although new to the kit, it more than supports a full size Nikon with battery grip and a 70-200mm 2.8 lens. Have not attempted mounting to a poll, or hand rail yet, but will soon. Did mount an Oben head to it for additional functionality, so far so good.

I use this with my Sony a7s as a makeshfit shoulder mount. Hard to explain, but it's perfect for what I need!
