I wanted a 24-70 mm f/2.8 for my Nikon. The Nikkor version is too expensive for my "hobby". I checked out reviews and felt comfortable with the Sigma. I have no regrets with my choice.

The lens performs well. I did test for back focus at various focal lengths and judged the lens accurate.

THE GOOD:
- A GREAT price
- No noticeable Chromatic Aberration
- No noticeable Vignetting
- Good focus speed
- Performs well in low light
- Good Bokeh (I think you have to TRY to get the exaggerated onion effect some have complained about)

THE BAD:
- It isn't as sharp as I had hoped. It's not really "bad", but it's almost noticeable
- OK, the sharpness issue is noticeable; which prompted my back focus test.
- The lens cap falls off (Sigma needs to make a better cap)- I replaced the original with a Tamron 82mm which works great.

THE UGLY (or IDIOSYNCRATIC):
- The zoom ring is closest to the camera, which is kind of weird... and the ring is a little stiff...
- An 82mm filter size, seriously?

To be fair this lens rates a full 4 stars for me. If it were as sharp as I had hoped for, then there would be no justification for the Nikkor's price. This lens fits my needs perfectly.

I purchased this lens along with a Nikkor 70-200mm F/2.8. I decided to purchase the Sigma because I own the Bigma, a superb lens for the money and to save some money on this large purchase. I took some shots at wide open aperture F/2.8 at 70mm the same day I received the lens to give it the acid test. I notice the images were not very sharp. So I took close-ups at full aperture and noticed more than softness, in my opinion slightly out of focus. Therefore, I started testing the lenses auto focus accuracy. I used the front/back focus chart you can download from the web. I set the camera up at 45 degrees to the chart (Nikon D700) and discovered the front focus problem. The front focus was so bad my Nikon D700 could not come close to tuning it out with focus tune. By the way, the front focus was at 70mm, and at 24mm the lens had back focus. I also ran the three battery test with confirmed the first test.

I believe this is a quality control problem at Sigma; a lens with this severe of a problem should never have left the factory. Also, none of my Nikkor lenses have this problem. I ran the same test on the new Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VR-II under the same conditions, and it was perfect at all zoom settings.

I have returned the lens for a refund. I am sure if I try enough copies, that I will find one that's good, I just don't have the time to perform quality control for Sigma. Therefore, I will spend the extra money and purchase the Nikkor 24-70. I would recommend this lens if you can find a good copy.

Pretty good zoom lens

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

Overall this is a pretty good lens. Would have preferred the nikon version for its weather sealing and slightly better optics, but for the money this is a good lens. Feels solid, fairly hefty weight though. Bought it to go with my d810 for when I don't want to carry around a bunch of prime lens. I also own the dx version of this lens to go with my d500, the sigma 17-50mm 2.8, which I think is actually a little better (slightly smaller, less weight, sharper images). But I don't regret buying this lens, it's a quality lens overall and a lot less expensive than the nikkor. I would recommend it if you are on a budget but still want good gear. I use this lens a good deal of the time for weddings and portraits, but also works good for landscapes and walking around as well as family snapshots of all the kids running around.

Sigma 24-70 mm lense

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

The lens is very sharp and clear. However, I am surprised by the weight of the lens. Being almost 2 lbs does it does get to be a burden if you will be carrying your camera around your neck for an extended period of time.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

This is my second Sigma lens. So I'm not surprised at the high quality and excellent images it provides.
Sharp, solid, easy to focus or zoom and holds when you set it.
The only down sides are the weight (it's a little bit of a beast) and the filter size of 82mm, wish it was 77mm like the rest of my pro grade lenses

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

This is now officially my go to lens. I have shot two weddings this month, and this has been the only lens on my camera. It gives you that close up shots you need as well as a good wide angle for small spaces! Super crisp and clear. Best purchase yet!

I haven't had a chance to use it in a wedding yet, but I have practiced with it and I love it. It's very sharp and the bokeh is nice if you are focused on something close to the lens.

Great lens but.

By Nick A

from Hays, KS

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

Pros: Light weight for a 24-70 f2.8, great image quality and minimal distortion.
Cons: too much vignetting, no lock for the zoom ring, Dust already made its way into the lens after only a month of usage
I would not recommend this lens to anyone shooting outdoors because of this dust issue. Really not happy about that

Great lens

By AK533

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I like this lens and am happy with my purchase. I agree wit a lot of the other reviews that say this lens is a good substitute for equivalent lenses at twice the price. You'd have to be a far better photographer than I to find the limitations of this lens. I'm loving the bokeh this lens gives on top of the flexibility of the zoom. It's a big lens but if I/you were bothered by this we'd be taking photos with our phones like all the other muppets out there!

I am just learning to use this and I am impressed. I use it on a Nikon D750. It is fast enough and produces sharp images. I have the Nikkor equivalent I use at work. I like this one better. It is astounding the quality Sigma has put into this at a much lower price than the Nikkor lens. Nice bokeh.

For my Nikon D800, I was looking for a full frame portrait and travel lens. I think for this price, this is the best I can get. It is heavy but worth it. POtraits are amazing. Sure I oculd make more sense having a Nikkor which is almost double the price, but this one providing a great picture quality. and large aperture make life much better. DOF is the best part. Awesome lens. I would recommend not to use Filters on it... but protection matter s at times.

I loved this lens but returned it because I wanted something sharper. I read reviews about the Tamron 24-70mm on DXOMark and decided that I wanted to pay the extra $400 for the sharper one plus I also wanted the image stabiliztion. This Sigma 24-70mm is a fantastic lens; well built, smooth and fast. I just wanted sharper images. The difference is not huge but something important to me. If you are within a budget, I would not regret buyin the SIgma 24-70mm
