I have been copying segments of tapes made by my Sony handycams (one analog and one digital on tape)and the results provide very good quality images. So far, I have made 15 discs and the machine has worked flawlessly. I had a frustrating experience with a competitors model two years ago, so I was hesitant to buy any DVD recorder after that experience and reading all the troubles people are reporting eith other brands. But, based on the reviews posted here, I decided to take a chance on this mfr and model.

First, the unit allows pausing during the recording so I can go forwards and backwards on the handycam to do scene sequencing. My earlier adventure required shutting the DVD recorder off in order to do that, with the resultant video and audio flutter and broken images on re-start of the recording. This one does it seamlessly!!!

I also copy TV programs from my DVR's hard disk drive onto DVDs so that I have a permanent copy. I do this manually. I set up the DVD recorder, select the DVR show, hit Record and Play, and the copying starts. I leave the room while it copies and use a kitchen timer to know when to go back and turn off the DVD unit.

I will say that the unit has alot of features I will never use (like timer recording) and the instruction manual naturally has to cover everything, so it is an imposing document. BUT..it has to be one of the most understandable and logical manuals ever produced. They really put an effort into step by step procedures for each operation. Applicable steps are shown next to a picture of the remote on which the applicable keys are darkened. Very nice idea for us normal humans. As others have mentioned, read through the manual to get a feel for its organization, note the glossary and index, and then begin to enter language, date, and other preferences per the sequence in the manual. I was impressed that Toshiba listed EXACTLY what discs to get. They have several manufacturer's and speed listed, which I followed. I was not sure about the differences between R factors. Mystery about plus, minus, and RW is clarified on a nice table for the user. I used the big online store to order the specific brand discs. So far, I think this is an excellent choice in DVD recorders for my purpose.

I did make my own set of steps/choices for formatting and recording and finalizing. That way I do not have to have the manual at hand.

The doors to both the DVD and VHS drives did not open. The Toshiba phone number that came with the product for customer support connected you to a computer message telling you to go to a website. The website in turn told you to call the number already given. I had to call the number for laptop customer support to actually speak to a human being who in turn gave me a working # for the DVD/VHS Recorder support. After all this I was told the problem was obviously mechanical (I had managed to figure that out on my own) and instructed me to return the item to B&H for an even exchange. Customer support at B&H- unlike Toshiba- was easy to reach and has been working to resolve the issue (they were unfortunately out of stock so unless they have a comperable item, I will be refunded). B&H has very good customer support and I will shop with them again. I will however not be looking at Toshiba products. The product and Toshiba's customer support did not rate the single star I gave but no star was not an option. B&H customer service rates a 5 star.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

I have made about 10 DVDs so far on this new machine - converting my old family video tapes and 8mm video cassettes. Great results, although it isn't the easiest thing in the world to use. Doing some online homework helped a lot.

Does What The Manufacture Claims

By Thomas

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

I only gave it four stars because it has limited inputs and no tuner.
Also it is very heat sensitive, meaning if it is in an enclosure and the temp varies from 80 to about 90 degrees it looses tracking and the picture quality degrades into static (use to be called 'snow' in the predigital age).
The description give the impression that it might have a tuner, but if read carefully it evident that it does not.
Over all it is an acceptable piece of equipment.

Don't Buy Unless You Get Extended Warranty

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

I bought this Toshiba after my Samsung DVD-VR345 died after 5 yrs.  This unit is not as easy to use and broke in less than 6 months of use.  I bought it in Feb. 2016 and didn't set it up until 2 months later.  In 9/16 the DVD unit stopped working.  Don't buy this Toshiba unless you buy the extended warranty!  When I called Toshiba they told me their warranty was 90 days, but didn't mention parts were covered for a year.

LOVE B & H

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

Unfortunately this Toshiba VCR/DVD PLAYER is the last of the quality units of this kind on the market. If you are looking for such a product buy this with assurance that it will provide many hours of QUALITY entertainment, B&H is a high quality supplier that I have dealt with several times over the years. Always top notch service and products. Even their packing exceeds most other companies of this type. Heavy duty cartons and bubble pack, not just a flimsy carton with a couple of pieces of paper thrown in. Extremely pleased with the product and supplier.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

I'm using this to watch my old VHS movies that can't be replaced and record my home movies on VHS to DVD. So excited I can preserve my family memories! I like that it can be connected to my TV via HDMI cable. Make sure you buy an HDMI cable along with it and some recordable DVDs. I thought I had both, but of course did not.

Toshiba DVR620

By Henry Mand

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

I had purchased this unit to convert my Home videos to digital format and store them on my computer. The features are great, and it is a very nice unit, the best of the 3 Toshiba DVD/VCR combo that B&H offers. However, I faced a strange issue with the unit. While playing my VHS-C tapes, using the adaptor, the unit would unpredictably stop and SHUT DOWN! After trying multiple times with a few different tapes, I called B&H customer service and they agreed (easily) to exchange it for me, with free return shipping. I am waiting for the new unit to arrive in a couple of days, and I will try to amend this review then. B&H customer Service, and the selection they offer is one of the best available from online vendors.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

This is a great product for people that may have a number of VHS tapes of personal videos. IE: Weddings, Children, etc. I already have two Toshiba DVD recorders (DR430's), and that's one reason I was interested in this one, especially since I have about 230 VHS tapes that have old TV recordings on them, most of which cannot be found on DVD. I was down to my last functional VHS player, and I was getting concerned. Keep in mind, this type of equipment is getting very rare. I advise to stock up soon, and actually use the equipment. Don't let it just sit for years before you use it. I am going to say this product is easy to use as far as I'm concerned. However, since most people had trouble setting the clock their VCR's, I'm not 100% sure that's the case. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I am an audio/video electronics guy all my life, so for me, it WAS easy. I do most of my video editing via computer, and therefore, I believe any limited amount of editing with this machine would be a nightmare.

After searching online for a reasonably priced DVD/VCR player, I found this one. I purchased it to replace the one I had that was about 10 yrs old as I still have quite a few VCR tapes and DVD discs. I was not willing to give them up nor was I willing to pay $500 for a replacement. It was exactly as advertised and took me only a few minutes to hook it up. The best thing is the HDMI port which has enabled my digital TV to truly capture the clarity and crispness of the recordings. It was also easy to hook up the stereo component system to allow me to enhance the audio of the recordings.
