I'm a solo producer/shooter working a variety of video subjects from advertising to art (wait - those are different??? ;-) ) to political, documentary and short feature.

I researched wireless mics quite a bit before choosing this Sennheiser package. For me, this was the best balance of sound quality, product features and affordability.

Sennheiser's frequency selection page took some studying, but helped me select a frequency range that seemed to best suit the area I work in most. When I buy a second unit, I'll probably choose a different band to have a little insurance.

Setup was easy, and Googling for tips on working with other gear – my Canon 5D Mark III and Zoom H4N - made getting up and running a breeze.

I recommend protecting the gear thoroughly – while the build quality feels very good, gear can be damaged or destroyed while in storage or transport, and that makes production days needlessly more challenging than they already are. I got a Pelican iM2100 Storm Case, which fits this entire kit plus a handheld mic, Zoom and a few accessories. Cute that the Sennheiser manual fits *perfectly* next to the Zoom manual under the top lid foam, so it'll be onsite with me if I ever need it.

As for the "Not bag-friendly" comment, an off-site pro reviewer points out that none of the controls or displays are accessible from the TOP of the transmitter or receiver, so you can't shove them into a bag and monitor or control anything. True. If that is a requirement for you, this kit might not be the best choice. OTOH, shoving these into a bag won't change any settings by rubbing up against anything and having knobs turned. If you can mount your gear so you can see what you need to see, you're good to go.

Why 4 instead of 5 stars? Many reviews mentioned that the ME 2 omnidirectional lav mic included with the kit doesn't have as good sound as some other options. Some pros may agree with this, but most seem to think that it's still good enough to keep in the bag as a backup in case your first choice mic isn't available. It would be great if the wireless transmitting quality was given a better signal to carry than this mic can provide, however, I think most prosumer users will never notice the difference.

First and foremost, going wireless is a ***game changer***, and this kit is priced to get in the game. I happen to use not one of these kits, but two of them on a regular basis: one is my own kit, which I've had for 7-8 years, and the other is owned by Uncle Sam (I'm a PAO in the National Guard). In fact, the U.S. Army issues the Sennheiser 100 ENG G3 to every 46-R (Public Affairs Broadcast Specialist) in the Army. These are army video journalists, more or less, and every owe of them I know uses this stuff on a daily basis. For whatever it's worth, if the Army trusts this stuff, it's obviously passed some validation. Just not my own. I'll explain..

The thing that fails is that front-facing rocker switch that can be seen on both the body-pack transmitter and receiver. It jams-in just by looking at it, it seems -- and when this happens -- the device(s) need to be repaired by a professional. It's happened to both my receiver and transmitter over the years, and to five of my colleagues in the Army. Honestly, I'm extremely careful with my gear, and this multi-time failure is simply not acceptable. Less the rocker switch, the metal construction of all three devices is very much pro-grade.

Please note:
* the SK100 handheld mic transmitter **does not** provide phantom power; but the SK300 does. I was able to swap out one for the other at time of purchase, but it cost considerably more $$. I use it often for shotgun mics that don't have an internal battery.
* the hot-shoe clip on the receiver is a maddening to get on and off. I hope youi don't plan to do that process regularly. You'll pull your hair out!
* range is what you might expect. After 100' or so, you're in really dicey territory.

Other that all of that, it's a heck of a system and has served me very well through the years, in uniform and wearing a coat and tie as a civilian reporter.

Comments about Sennheiser ew 100 ENG G3 Wireless Microphone Combo System - A (516-558 MHz):

There are some people who are critical about the plastic construction of some components of the packs, but I haven't found any that are broken, and I rent these from my high school; they definitely can stand up to some significant abuse! The wireless XLR pack for microphones is very well constructed, and balances well with the microphone; the entire thing feels very natural; my only criticism is the locking mechanism. Did Sennheiser really have to use a tedious screw-lock mechanism? With the space that the twist mechanism uses, a tab lock mechanism could probably be engineered by someone at Sennheiser, in my honest opinion. The included lavaliere mic sounds excellent, but the connecting end could use some more robust strain moulding. The strain moulding that's there right now is simply not sufficient. It feels like if there's any place that the cable will fray or break, it's right where the strain moulding ends; I would put some gaff tape to extend the strain moulding as soon as you get the kit. It doesn't matter how careful you are with it, it still feels extraordinarily fragile. Likewise, the flexible antennas are just too fragile. I've seen these kits used in theaters where the entire antenna is wrapped in colored electrical tape; when I inquired, the reason was for preventing fraying and color coding. If Sennheiser could implement a similar antenna to what Sony does, with the rigid antennas on a hinge, it would dramatically increase my confidence level.

The wireless sound quality is flawless, at least to my ears. Someone with better ears could probably tell audio quality better than I could, but for ENG and short film purposes, it's just fine.

Comments about Sennheiser ew 100 ENG G3 Wireless Microphone Combo System - A (516-558 MHz):

I used this model for years at in a web video production company with almost no problems. The range is great, the sound quality is great. Then I had to use to a cheaper brand for a few months when I changed jobs, and the difference was so catastrophic I made the company splurge on another set of these guys. I simply don't have any of the interference or static issues with these that I would always have to deal with in other models. The screw-in connectors are also a huge plus, because the transmitter will inevitably get knocked around a little when it's on someone's body, and I used to have huge issues with cords coming unplugged. Also, the battery indicators on these are SO essential. No more wondering if the sound is weird because of the battery or something else, this model has both a low battery indicator light AND a battery level meter on the screen so there's never any doubt about what state the batteries are in. Plus they're AAs (much easier to replace than 9v), and have a decent life - I've shot a solid 8 hours with these on the entire time, and they still have a little juice to spare at the end of the day. It is easy to damage the antennae, which are pretty delicate and not removable like in some other sets, but if you treat them gently, they'll be fine.

The only downside is the menu is not very user-friendly. I found it nearly impossible to navigate until I sat down and read the manuals cover-to-cover, and even then it took some getting used to. I realize you should always read the instructions for equipment, but if you happen to inherit a set from someone who didn't keep the paperwork, you're going to have a hard time. They have a lot of awesome, life-saving features - such as sync and scan - that are buried in the menu and take some investigating. I still can't figure out this whole RF ON/OFF thing, even with the instructions right in front of me. That said, once you figure out your settings, its super easy to use day-to-day and I will never go back.

Comments about Sennheiser ew 100 ENG G3 Wireless Microphone Combo System - A (516-558 MHz):

I love these wireless units. I think they're the best system in that price range, by far, and the best bang-for-buck. I'd only pay more for Lectrosonics, but those are sort of in a different price bracket.

The weakest link on these units is the connector on the transmitter, so treat it with care. The locking connector on top is great in that it's very secure, but it also turns the plug on the end of the lav cable into a giant lever that puts pressure on the internal components of the transmitter if it's bent at all. Actors tend to do that when they sit down if the transmitter is in their pocket or clipped on the back of the pants.

Also, the mic that comes with this system (the ME2) is terrible (compared to the wireless system itself). I'd recommend buying another lav (like a Countryman B3) to use as the primary mic and keeping the ME2 as the spare.

We just received this and have used it for one job. I can see that it will be useful in a variety of situations. It comes with a lav mic, and bodypack transmitter along with a plug on transmitter for handheld mics.
I used this system during a seminar to connect an amplifier directly to the bodypack transmitter, sending the audio signal to a camera mounted across the room. The cable to do this was included (minus the RCA to 1/8" female adapter). Audio quality was excellent with no interference as far as I could tell.
Construction quality seems excellent, with all the various parts feeling solid and durable.

I purchased a pair of these G3's to replace an older set of ew500 packs.

The smaller size/lighter weight is great, as is the longer battery life and use of less expensive AA batteries. They are reasonably simple to use and I like the feature to scan for clear frequencies and IR pairing for the transmitter.

                      My two disappointments:
                      • No phantom power on the plug-in transmitter. It's my fault for not noticing before buying, but how in the world does it make sense to leave this off?
                      • Antennas are soldered onto the circut board, which means when they are inevitably damaged, the entire pack has to be disassembled. With old 'ew' series, the antennas had a screw terminal and could be replaced in about 15 seconds.
